Eyelid Infection in 16 Month Old

Hello! I took my daughter in to the doctor for an eye infection yesterday. After looking at her, he said it was an "eyelid infection" and not pink eye. He prescribed an antibiotic, and said I should see an improvement. Today, it actually looks a little worse...her eyelid itself is very red and swollen, but there is no drainage and her eyeball is totally clear. I am just wondering if any of you moms have had this happen to your toddler, and how long it took to clear up? My doctor assured me its not contagious, especially since I started the antibiotic, but I am just curious. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My son had what looked like a scratch on his eyelid, which it originally was, but it didn't look right. I took him in the his doctor tested for staph, and low and behold it was a minor version of staph. I am glad we caught it though because it could have morphed into something horrible. So maybe have your doc run a staph culture just to make sure. Never hurts to be thorough. Kids can get staph super easy from being around other kids and just touching everything.

1st of all- I heard of the breast milk thing when I had my 1st child and I tried it and I believe it cured her eye infection. I also researched it and it is very safe. Also, I told my pediatrician and he seemed pleased enough. But one of my daighters had an eyelid infection called blepharitis and the doctor prescribed topical antibiotics. It cured it so well. It began to work within a day or two, but we did the antibiotics everynight for a while-- maybe 2 weeks.

If you still nurse or know of anyone that does you could put some breastmilk in her eye.Sounds weird, but it's great at clearing up infections. When I was nursing, my husband got pinkeye and I pumped some for him and it cleared up within a day

I don't know if you took your child to a pediatrician or an eye doctor (optometrist or ophthalmologist), but if you haven't taken her to an eye doctor please do so. Regular doctors only talked about eyes for two days in medical school (I was shocked to find that out too) so they are very bad at treating anything with the eye, even pink eye. If you took her to her pediatrician she may have been given an incorrect diagnosis or an inappropriate antibiotic.

I just noticed some comments about a breast milk remedy. It does sound crazy, but I know it can clear a plugged tear duct in a baby so it may work on an infection as well. My husband is an eye doctor and while he was in school (just a few years ago) the baby of one of the other student's had a really stubborn clogged tear duct. They tried putting breast milk in his eye and it cleared right up. He asked one of the professors in class about it the next day and he said it is a known, verified, and effective treatment for unclogging a tear duct in a baby. I just asked my husband about using it on an eye infection and he said he hadn't heard anything about that, but it's worth a shot.

Hi L. - I've never heard of the breastmilk thing - are they serious??? Sounds like an old wives tale to me. I dont think I would ever put breast milk in my child's eyes. Something that can grow enough bacteria to spoil after sitting out for just 30minutes doesnt sound like something I would want in my eye.

An infection of the eyelid is usually something called cellulitis which can be an aggressive infection and can spread to the brain which is why your doc prescribed antibiotics. If she is not improved by today, she should see her doc again for re-evaluation. Also, if she spikes any fever while on the antibiotics, call doc ASAP or get her to urgent care. It could mean that infection is spreading and is very serious if that happens.

good health to your and your little girl!
