Just wondering if anyone has visited the local ERs here in Leavenworth? I might be headed to one soon...and was unsure if Cushing Memorial (part of St. Luke's Medical System) or St. Johns would be better. Anyone have any good or bad experiences to report?
Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I ended up going to St. John and they were great. I really appreciate the input!

We go to Cushing. I don't know anything about St. John.

A.,
I use St. John's for everything. I had all three of my boys there, the staff is great. My oldest has been there so many times for typical boy injuries the admin staff know us by heart. I have been to Cushing to see family admitted there and also to guard inmates when I worked. Cushing is so outdated. Their rooms are crowded and smaller. My youngest boy had to be kept overnight at 2 months old because they thought he had pneumonia. Of course we went to St. John's, again they were great. Not only did they take care of our baby, they were there for me as well. I absolutely love it there.

We had one experience at St. Johns and it was great. Our pediatrician said Cushing was better equipped for kids. However, if it's very serious, St. Johns has a helipad--Cushing does not.

I have not been to either ER, but I know people who have had a good experience at both.

I've used both and even though I live closer to Cushing, I wouldn't take my dog there on a good day.

Both times involved my son, once when he woke up and was having some kind of breathing problem. I tried everything I knew at home, then finally took him to Cushing at around midnight. The ER was deserted and after waiting for someone to show up and check us in, we waited *alone* in the ER for FOUR HOURS until finally a doctor came in to see him. Of course, by then my son was breathing normally and dozing on the bed. The doctor looked him over and said he was fine. I could have told him that. And then they sent me a $400.00 bill. For what, I'd like to ask.

The second incident was when my son put his hand through a glass pane in my back door as he was running with friends. He was cut down to the tendons and I wrapped a towel around his arm, bypassed Cushing and went straight to St. John. It was the middle of the afternoon, the place was as busy as you could imagine yet we were seen promptly and my son's arm was cleaned and stitched up in thirty minutes flat.

Thankfully, those are the only two times we've had to use the ER system in Leavenworth, but like I said above, I would not ever go to Cushing again.

I hope that where ever you decide to go, your experience will be professional and quick.

Bless,

S.
