Bed Rails for "Big Girl Bed"

Hi! Originally I'd planned on moving my daughter to a matress on the floor when we transitioned her to her big bed, but there's not really space in the room and the bed is already there, sooooooo I'm looking for a good bed rail till she feels/seems safe (I also want to deter her from getting out of bed to play at 3am!). I've been doing a lot of reasearch online and have gotten such mixed reviews of all of them that I'm left wondering what to do. Any suggestions/personal experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

I used bed rails for both of my boys until about age 4 or 5. I put a stuffed animal or cute pillow in each top corner to keep their heads away from the intersection of the rail and headboard. They sometimes kicked the rail away a little and got an arm or leg sticking through, but it wasn't a big problem. Definitely get 2 rails instead of counting on the wall to cover one side of the bed. Good luck!

Hi B.,

I bought my daughter double bed rails in pink and white that I think are by Safety First. We have been very happy with them for nearly two years now. I found a great deal with free shipping on the internet, but can't remember where (I'm sorry). Best of luck!

We got our daughter a full size bed and the longer bedrails that almost go the full length of the bed. The tranisiton for her was at 20 months and it went great! Not sure "what we did" but now she is almost 2.5 and never gets out of bed. Get the longest bed rails you can find. Only downside is that its hard to keep a comforter or bedspread on the bed with the side rails, but well worth it. OneStepAhead.com has them, but they are cheaper at babies r us.

we ordered ours from www.onestepahead.com and have been very happy with it. Our two and a half year old son is a very active sleeper and it contains him just fine.

Hi. We have the One Step Ahead bed rails from OneStepAhead.com. We used them for our 5 year old and now have them on our 3 year old's bed. I like them because they connect under the mattress for a secure fit. They can adjust to a twin up to a queen size mattress. Hope this is hepful!

Hi! My daughter is turning 3 this week and has been in her big girl bed for 2 weeks now, and we did not use rails. Her mattress is up on the box spring and it's pretty high -- she has to really try to climb up on it. We have her bed up against the wall along the side and the head. She fell out the very first night (but no big deal, no injuries!). I coached hubby on how to "tuck-in" the sheets and comforter (he didn't do it that first night), and she clearly learned to stay on the other side of the bed.

The negative I've heard about bed rails is that it makes it very difficult to sit on the bed and read to your child. I guess they don't come off easily.

She got out of bed the first couple nights, immediately after we put her to bed and left her room. But then we started using a really cool nightlight that glows as a moon at night and a sun during the morning. We instructed her that she cannot get out of bed if the moon is on -- and it works!!

Good luck!!

We got a portable one that we take to Grandmas. It can also be folded down. It's one of those baby brands - Cosco, First Step....sorry I don't remember. We bought it years ago, so I don't even know if they still make them, but it might be a good option for you.

Look at Babies R Us online and see if they have one there.

is the one that I used with my daughter. I liked that it was for both sides of the bed so that I could have the bed anywhere in the room and be ok. It worked great.

I had my son in a full sized bed the night he climbed out of his crib at 18 months old. We didn't make a big deal about it. I purchased bed rails at Kmart for both sides. It was a snap to install. We took the crib appart infront of him, and told him it is big boy bed time. That night he went down without a fuss and by the time he was 3, we took the bed rails down. Good luck.

I love our First Years bed rail. For my first child I had a different/cheap rail that didn't attach to the opposite side of the mattress. Useless, it just slid away from the bed when she leaned on it.

As long as it secures on both sides of the bed, you are fine. Also, this First Years rail can fold down when not in use, great feature for making the bed look nice, or for when she's transitioning away from the rail.
