Hi everyone, i am a mom of a 16 month old with another one on the way this summer, we will be converting our spare room into my current daughters room. and her room now will become the new baby's room, my question is, do i use a toddler bed for my daughter who will be a year and 9 months when the baby is born or do i use the full size bed that i currently have and just attach railings? i am concerned about her falling off the larger bed and getting hurt, but using it will avoid having to store it at a family members house until we need it. has anyone out there dealt with this? any advice would be great... thanks

What can I do next?

I would use the regular bed with rails. If you are concerned about the height you could take the bed off of the frame and just have it on the floor. I have my 2year old in a toddler bed and want to switch her to a regular bed, just have to find the $$!

The bigger bed is nice if she wants you to lay down with her and snuggle or anything like that!

I think that the regular bed with the rails would be just fine. My sister has a daughter that she moved to a twin size bed because she is going to have another baby coming that is due in May. What she did is ditch the box spring and just put pieces of wood along the frame so that the bed isn't so far from the floor. It worked well for her! I hope this helps!!! Good luck.

we never used toddler beds. we used a rail on a regular bed and both my kids turned out fine. if you are scared to have her up that high, you can always just use the box spring and mattress (not the frame)

when I moved my son into his big boy bed he only wanted the twin size bed and so I put it up against the wall and but one of those 3 side rails on the bottom and the side bar on the side near that he steps out from he loves it he feels safe and was so excited that he was a big boy just becareful to make the change now because if you do it closer to the due date she will be very upset that she is being replaced also I don't know if you were plaing it or not it's better not to use the baby stuff on the bed she used she'll feel not special my son had that problem and so did my neice

Hi T.~

Congrats on the new baby coming! I would just use the bed that you have. It eliminates having to move it to another house, having to buy a toddler bed, and then moving it back when you need it. Also, it may come in handy if she needs you or her dad to snuggle (the bigger bed will make it more comfy for you or dad). I would put the bed rails up on both sides of the bed. Good Luck with everything!

How about using a regular twin size bed without the frame. Just put the mattress and boxspring (or don't even use a boxspring) on the floor. You can still use those portable side bar things. That way, if she does fall, it's only like 1 foot high. And it'll gradually get her used to a regular bed set up (with the bed frame).

Hi T., I had reservations about putting my daughter in a regular bed as well, but my Father In Law wanted to buy her bedroom set for her 2nd bday and I wasn't about to pass up an offer like that! She had already climbed out of her crib so she slept in the crib converted to toddler bed just while we were waiting for the furniture to be delivered. She's been in a twin bed with rails ever since and we've never had a problem. In fact she loves her big girl's bed! Congratulations on your pregnancy and best of luck!

A toddler bed can be a big waste of money. My daughter never would sleep in one, but my oldest son loved his. I don't plan to buy one for my two youngest boys. If I were you I would put the box spring and mattess on the floor, and use rails. It will only be half as far to fall to the floor, plus you'll still have the rails to help teach her the boundaries. Put it up against a wall too, and when you put her to bed put her in the top far corner. With it being a full size bed you should still be able to find cute little girl sheets for it too!

Don't even worry about the toddler bed. When my oldest was about 12-14 months old, I did a huge rearange of my house, and his bedroom was switched just like you are doing. I put him stright into the twin bed, I just did not put the bed on the frame. I did it that way first so that if he did happen to roll out, it was barely any drop at all. He did great for about a month so I put the bed back on the frame. He has been find ever since.
I currectly have a rail on my bed for my littest one when sleeps with me during the night, and those rails are nice, but they are a real hassle when trying to get in and out.

Hi T.,
I would just use the regular bed and not waste money on the toddler bed.
The railings work wonderful, I put one of those long pillows next to the railing It made the sleep space smaller and It was more comforting for my girls.
good luck and take care.

I honestly think a toddler bed is a waste of money. You'd have to use the crib mattress (so if your other child is in a crib, you'd have to buy another one), and they grow out of it so fast! When my son was 18 months old, I put a twin size mattress on the floor, and had the crib right next to it (sort of like a railing). When I knew he was comfortable with that (which only took a couple of weeks), I removed the crib. Then a couple of weeks after that, I set up the rest of the bed against the wall. He did fall out of the bed once in the middle of the night at first, so I would suggest putting down pillows for a while and getting an extra long bed railing.
I hope all of this helps and good luck to you!!

I never used a toddler bed for my son. When he was almost 2 1/2 we switched him to a regular twin bed. We put one side against the wall and the other side has a rail. He's never fallen out. Put he has alot more freedom when he's in there at night because there is no way to keep him in bed. I don't care if he stays in bed. But he does have to stay in his room. So for a while we put a gate in his doorway so that he couldn't leave his room. Either way you decide, make her new room an event. I totally redid my son's room. Paint, comforter, the whole sha-bang. He loves his room.

I am a mother of two, ages 4 and 3 with another one the way. My son was 17 months old when I put him in a full- size bed and my daughter was 15 months old when I put her in a full size bed. Both of them used the rails for maybe a week until I was comfortable with it and then they came off. They are very independant and I would not have done it any other way.

hi T.,

my daughter is 13 months, most of the time she sleeps in queen size bed ( with me) i instoled the bed rails, its never been a problem with the rails(plus i have the monitor, just in case) i think your daughter is grown enough to sleep in a regular bed, for extra safty you can instole 2 sets of bed rails (a set is about $30 smthng in baby stores) super easy to instole, and easy to take of when you dont need it anymore.if you're scared let her sleep on the mattres first. but she should be fine in reg. bed. congratulations and good luck!!

I have an almost 2 year old and one also due this summer! I had the same questions as you, and came to the conclusion that a toddler bed is a waste of money! We had a spare twin bed (used to be in the "spare" bedroom, which is now her bedroom), and until 2 nights ago she slept just on the mattress on the floor. She got used to that and now has the whole "big girl" bed and getting her to go to bed has never been so easy! If you would like to use the whole thing right away, I would suggest using the rails. They will prevent her from falling and getting hurt. Also, if you are skipping the toddler bed all together, there is no need to buy a new crib mattress for the new baby! The rails for a regular bed are not very expensive so if that is the only cost involved even better. This worked well for us. Hope this helps you!

I have two little boys 18 months apart and it came very highly recommended to keep the older one in the crib as long as possible. We purchased another crib... if money's tight, try to borrow one. You don't want to change too much too soon. You may end up with more than you bargained for in the temper tantrum department. My older son didn't start to climb out of the crib till he was almost 2 1/2. I slept better knowing he was safe. If you do go with the toddler bed or bigger. Start with it in the room she's in just so she can used to seeing it. It took my son almost 6 months to even try the twin mattress I'd put on the floor for him, he just wanted his crib. I'd even taken him to the store and let him pick out his own sheets and blankets (Thomas the train). Start with the mattress on the floor... no headboard or anything. It's less of a fall if anything happens. Baby proof the room and put a baby gate in the doorway. My now 3 year old will get up and entertain himself in the morning. He'll yell for me when he's ready to go downstairs, and I can lay in bed a little longer knowing he's safe not downstairs getting in to everything.
Good Luck,
T.

I would just give her the bed you have. They make really great attachable bed rails for beds that don't have them. They are easy to put on and take off. I also think in the long run your daughter will like it because it will always have been always been her bed, even when she's big. Also it's big enough you won't have to buy her a new one later on. With the bed rails on, she won't be able to fall out.

Hi T.,
When my son was 1 I switched him to a full size bed. He never slept well in his crib, he is a big boy and moves around when he sleeps so I thought a full size with rails would work. It did. I put the rails on and didn't have a problem. I was paranoid at first and checked on him often and always had a monitor near me, almost bought a video monitor but didn't.
I say go for it, it worked for my son, who is now 5 1/2 and still in the full size.

I think if you have the regular bed then you should use it. I will suggest instead of using only 2 railing I would use 4 so you are sure she will not fall off when she is asleep, but as I am writing I think the toddler bed would be alot easier for her to get in and out of on her own without falling and getting hurt. My daughter is 5 and she still uses her toddler bed because I am afraid of her getting hurt when getting on or off my sons twin size bed and that is only becasue the bed frame is all wood with those 3 drawers at the bottom.

Good luck on your decision

My suggestion is move her to a toddler bed because a big bed might seem to big to her. She is still little.

We were in the same situation and we went for the full size bed. We had gone to Cape Cod and my son slept in a full size bed alone with pillows EVERYWHERE in the hotel. We decided when we got home it was a perfect time to switch out of the crib. We broke the crib down and hid it, so it would be out of sight and out of mind. And we set up the big-boy-bed in his room. It worked great. At the same time we had him falling asleep on his own.
When the baby came, we set up the crib and he had no interest in it.

I would suggest putting your daughter in a regular size bed if you have it. They aren't in the toddler bed very long and it would just be a waste of money. I put my daughter in a queen size bed when she was 18 months old and she was fine - I just put railings on the side.

Good luck!
