Baby 5 Weeks in Size but Am 12 Weeks Pregnant

I took a positive pregnancy test in October. It is now near the end of december and I started bleeding slightly so my midwife sent me to take a sonogram. What the sonogram revealed is that the baby looks to be about 5 weeks old in size which, the midwife told me, would mean that I concieved 3 weeks ago which makes no sense since, as I mentioned before, I took 2 positive pregnancy test plus a medical test in October that came out positive. Ok, so I thought that the baby perhaps did no grow correctlly and now I am to miscarry but the gestational sack is the same size as the baby and the midwife says "it doesn't look like that is what is going on". One possibility, she says, is that my body reapsorbed the baby and then immediatly got pregnant again and the bleeding I am experiencing could be either remnents of the old pregnancy or implantation bleeding from the new one. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your firm reassurance and support. I am waiting for another sonogram in two weeks and then we will see...

I have been through a similar situation. See a doctor in another week to see if the baby has grown. Usually after 6 1/2 weeks you can hear a heartbeat. I agree with the other poster about this happenin all the time, except most women don't know it! Blessings. N.

I had an ultrasound at 9 weeks and had a baby that measured 5 weeks. The baby's heartbeat was really slow though, in 90s. I eventually miscarried.
Is the heartrate good? Is it AT ALL possible that you could have conceived again later on and the first baby was reabsorbed? I mean, if you didn't have sex that's not possible. Did you do the deed around the time that this baby would have been conceived?
If not, I'd say this is an impending miscarriage. I'm sorry.

Yes, I have heard of this. It could have been what they call a "chemical" pregnancy. Apparently it happens to women all the time and we don't even know it. If you would not have taken those tests, maybe even taken them a week later, you might not have even known you were pregnant. I can understand and that is still very nerve wracking...but don't freak out too much if that is what it is. Like I said, it apparently happens ALL THE TIME, we just don't know it. I would still of course follow up a lot, especially to ease your mind.

Yes, I have heard of this. A friend had the problem with reabsorption. It certainly can happen.

I am not against midwifes, doula's or anything like it...but this doesn't seem like a run of the mill situation and I would highly recommend that you see an obstetrician. You can still use a midwife for your delivery and care once it is established that you have a healthy pregnancy.

I have not heard of that but I suppose it could be possible. The question would be did you have sex about that time? If not then obviously that's not a possibility. Try not to stress although that may be difficult and get a follow-up to look for change. As a woman that has been through three miscarriages in which all have measured at least 2 weeks behind, one we even had a strong heartbeat on, I'd be questioning that possibility. I pray it works out for you.

D., What your midwife is telling you is very probable. It's very common for women to have an early pregnancy loss (the fertilized egg attaches to the uterus lining, produces enough hormone to make a pregnancy test positive, but never develops properly)and never even know it. Because pregnancy tests are so sensitive we pick up a lot of pregnancies we wouldn't have years ago. It's very common to conceive again quickly after a loss so your ultrasound findings do not surprise me in the least. A second ultrasound in 2-4 weeks should confirm whether this pregnancy/baby is growing properly. So hang in there. I wish you the very best. Pregnancy is one of life's many things of which we have very little control. We cannot change what is to be because God is in control of the beginning and continuance of life. Take care of yourself. R., nurse-midwife since 1999 and SAHM since 2005 and loving it.

I have a friend that has twin boys that are 2 months apart gestational age, She was getting pregnant, ovulating again then conceiving again, her body would reject one or the other, then it happened over and over again until they realized what was going on and one month there was one baby then at her 3rd ultrasound there were 2 babies... they are fraternal twins they look very very similar, one was full term the other premature... interesting huh? My mother in law had a miscarriage at 18 weeks and her body reabsorbed the baby... there was nothing there when they did her dnc and there was FOR SURE a baby in there... so I know it happens.
We have TONS of outside hormonal influences and other toxins that are causing issues like this!

I wish you the very best!!! and congratulations!!! Just enjoy, relax, and stay healthy!
Merry Christmas!

Don't worry about it D., I'm sure it will all work out. Yes, I have heard of the body reabsorbing a miscarriage. It does happen. And bleeding happens at implantation. But, the dr.s/ultrasound reader can also be wrong. Each child is different and therefore each one grows and develops at a different pace. Relax and enjoy. Your time will come!
