Anybody Have a False Allergy Test?

When my son was 13 months old I have him peanut butter and he threw it up. It seemed every time he had peanut butter he threw up. It was always hours afterwards, so it took us a litle while to catch on to it. His pedi wanted him to have a RAST test. Its a blood test that will tell you if your child is allergic to anything. It came back positive for: Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Eggs, Milk, Soy, Dogs & Cats. OKAY, understand that my son drinks Soy Milk like its going out of style. We have both a dog and cat, he eats Milk products, not a whole lot, because I'm not a fan of cows milk. He never had a reaction to any of those things. According to the allergy test he has a very high allergy to all the above mentioned things.
Well, we saw an allergist. He didnt want to skin test him because he was so little. (He was only a little over an year) He told us to stay away from Peanut & Tree Nuts. But, we could continue giving him the soy, milk, etc.
We are taking him this summer, he will be three, to be skin tested for all the allergens. We are keeping our fingers crossed that everything comes back negative. Does anyone out there have any experience with a false blood allergy test???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We were going to have him tested when we turned two, this past summer. But, even if the tests came back negative, we will still have to avoid the allergens, because things could change. And because his blood test came back positive they wouldnt want to chance it. I guess things can change up until they are 3 years old. So we are waiting until then to skin test him. We didnt want to have to put him through it twice. But, I am very anxious to see the results.
His asthma is only exercise induced. He coughs uncontrollably after he runs around for an extended period of time. The flovent seems to be doing the trick. We havent had any coughing fits since he has been on it.
The dog and the cat dont seem to trigger any reaction out of him.
Thanks, Mamas!

Actually, I just took my son to the allergist yesterday to get a prick test (he's two). Last year he was given a blood test for allergies and found out he was allergic to eggs. I found this odd because he had eaten eggs and egg noodles in the past and never had a problem. Plus my mother-in-law accidentally fed him french toast after the test was taken and still no reaction. So for the past year, we have been avoiding eggs and anything with eggs in it (such as cookies, pancakes, etc). Then my son had a liking to blueberry pancakes and we tried it and watched him-- again, no reaction. Since the season of the flu shot is here, his doctor decided to have him go to an allergist to test the egg allergy again. After painful poking, we found out that not only is he not allergic to egg, but probably never was. The allergist let me know that it is common for blood allergy tests to come back with a false positive (meaning that it says they are allergic, when indeed they are not). -- I was quite frustrated to hear about this because my son is a very picky eater and to take away the few things that he did like to eat is ridiculous!!
-So that is my story. Good luck on your son!!! -- By the way, how can I find out more about this National Milk Bank? I am due to give birth in a few weeks and am curious about donating my milk!

Hi,

Do you know if blood allergy tests can be false negative? Anyway I just wanted to say I cant help much with your questions, but with the asthma, often times is really just an allergic reaction. He may be reacting to those things after all and that is how it is coming out.

my son is 3 year old I had him tested my both skin and blood I wanted to make sure. He is allergic to Peanuts and shellfish. his numbers came back very high. He onece had a chex mix it did not have peanuts in it but it was made with peanut flour, and never had a reaction.Once I found out about the testing I will not give him that anymore. The Dr. said it could of been the amount of protein from the peanut flour that is why he did not have any reaction.

The thing that upset me the most when I took him to the allergist was he asked if my son ever ate peanuts or shellfish I replied NO, then he asked if I breastfeed and said that is probably how he got this allergy through my milk. ( I did have peanut butter and shellfish is one of my favorite foods)

I called the ped. crying that I did this to my son and he told me not to listen, but could it be true could he have gotten this through my breast milk. If I knew I would of never ate any of that,

i AM GOING THROUGH THE SAME SITUATION. MY SON WHO IS A LITTLE OVER 3 YRS. OLD WAS TESTED FOR ALLERGIES TO FOOD. IT CAME BACK THAT HE WAS ALLERGIC TO MILK AND EGG WHITES. IT TURNED MY WORLD UPSIDE DOWN BECAUSE ALL HE EATS ARE MILK AND AGG BASED PRODUCTS. I AM TAKING HIM TO AN ALLERGIST BUT HE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE SECOND GUESSINGIT. ANYWAY NOW MY SON DOESN'T EAT ANYTHING SO I AM TAKING HIM TO A NUTRITIONIST TO GET HER OPINION THEN I WILL TAKE HIM TO ANOTHER DOCTOR FOR A SECOND OPINION. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO BECAUSE HE IS LOOSING WEIGHT ALSO.

A few of my friends have kids with allergies to all the things you mentioned. I think your son would have some sort of a reaction to the allergens if he is in fact allergic to them. I'd say get him tested again, now. It doesn't seem right that he is supposedly allergic to all those things but has no problem with them. Why wait until the summer to find out? He's old enough now to be tested. If one allergist says no to testing him now, try another. Kids often outgrow allergies, I'll keep my fingers crossed that that's the case for your son!
