Almost-kindergartener's Sleep

5 year old is staying up well past bedtime, and will turn on his light to read in the wee hours of morning. Installed a timer today to keep lights off, but he was just out of bed again a few minutes ago (it's 10pm). He's got a nightlight and a star turtle but claims fear of the dark. Any thoughts?

So What Happened?

So far less popping out of bed, though he's taken to sleeping on the floor near the long window and in the morning I find the shade pinned to his dresser by the lamp - so he's found another way around the lack of light.

hey kristen!
is he excited about going to school? if so, then tell him that you think hes not ready to go yet because he is having a hard time sleeping, and that kids in school need to sleep. my daughter was having issues with wiping her bum, and my mom suggested that i have a talk with her and let her know that i dont feel that she is ready for school, and she now wipes herself every time!and when i had that talk with her, i didnt do it in the heat of the moment, i waited. maybe during the day you could talk to him. frusterating, i know. i dont know, just a thought. good luck!

with my 5 year old DD I recently conquered this very issue.
have a consistent bed time routine. We now start this at dinner...At which time we turn off her tv in her room,
after dinner while her brother gets his bath, she picks up her room. She then has her bath brushes her teeth, and if she co-operates she gets a story. we start earlier the next night if she doeasn't. this hasn't been completely consistent on our parts but she is now going to bed in her own bed by 9:30 pm. She was staying up much later...midnight or better in bed whith us, so this is good.

Hi K.,
Could he be sleeping to late in the morning and so he is not tired enough? Just a different thought.

I would try some positive reinforcement. Maybe start a sticker chart and have him put a sticker on his chart every morning he stays in bed. After so many stickers, he can get a reward. Another thing we have done is a treasure chest. Each day for whatever behavior we set to work on that day, if she did it all day, she got to pick a treasure. You could have him pick a treasure each morning. We put very small things in it...like things you get in a goody bag after a birthday party.

I love to see other moms who breastfeed, cloth diaper, babywear, etc.

Good luck!

Hi Kristen!
Try some calming activities at least an hour before bedtime such as coloring, stories, or just chatting about the days events. Sounds like a little anxiety {not bad} but just that he's got a lot on his mind and it takes some extra time to unwind. My six yr.old is the same way and we've tried it all with her. Big changes up ahead....be patient! I know easier said but believe me when I say my six yr. old put us through the ringer at night and my patience wore very thin, but we got through it.

Best of luck to you!

my 6.5 year old went through this last year. It took a few months but he started going to bed at bedtime again. I finally told him if he didnt stay in bed after lights out his night light was going away and it also seemed to help when I started putting him to bed earlier that way he was settled and sleeping by the time he was supposed to be in bed. Good luck.
