A Cold or Allergies??

So we're onto day 2, and what I thought was just a few sneezes has turned into a consistant sneeze, and really weird full diapers. Yesterday my son (17 months) started sneezing, which I thought seemed like cold symptoms, but he's acting completely fine. He is a bit more whiney, but I assume that's normal too. But the weirdest thing is the diapers - yesterday I changed like 5 diapers that were completely wet, but also had bits of poop in them. They also smelled extremely disgusting. (not that normal diapers smell like roses, but you get the point) And today hoping that he was over it, he woke with another diaper exactly the same. And now he's getting the worst diaper rash I've ever seen! Do you think this deams a trip to the doctor? He's still eating normally and sleeping fine. He actually slept a little more than normal yesterday. Your thoughts?

What can I do next?

Most likely culprit is a virus. I know we have the same virus going around my daycare, I have sent 2 kids home this week w/the same thing. The dr's office said to get some Butt Paste and plain maloxx antacid and mix the 2 apply to rash. The malox apparantly helps the acidic content of the pooh & urine & the Butt Paste has zinc oxide to help heal the rash. If you cannot find Boudreaux's Butt Paste, Triple Paste works really well too. They are both kind of spendy but they work.

It's hard to say what it is, but I wouldn't recommend taking him to the doctor unless he gets an infection and needs antibiotics (his snot will be green) or he has a high fever that you can't get down. Taking him into the Dr's office will just expose him to all the really sick kids in there and the Dr. will just tell you to keep him hydrated and comfortable and recommend some over the counter diaper rash ointment. You can also let him run around naked for a little while to get some air on his little bum and it will heal quicker. For ointments, Dr. Smith's or Butt Paste works well with J&J baby powder made of cornstarch, Aloe and Vitamin E. You can also call the nurse's hotline and find out at what point the offer prescription diaper ointment if that doesn't work.

Good luck,
S.

My son is also like that since he was few months old. He's turning 3yrs old now. It has been a routine that after a few days of colds he will have a few days of diarhea with diaper rash. My peadiatrician who is also a respiratory specialist said the virus from upper respiratory went down the gut which is normal. Im giving him lacteol forte and smecta. For the diaper rash im using a diaper rash cream with zinc oxide.

Sounds like he has a bad case of diarrhea. I would make sure he is getting a lot of fluids so he doesn't become dehydrated. I would also let him go naked for awhile to dry out his bum.

My son would do this occasionally when he was getting teeth. He was pretty miserable for awhile, but it would clear itself up within a few days.

Kids under 2 really can get allergies, my son had allergies at that age, we went through all the testing with an allergy specialist.

It sounds to me that two things are going on with your child, one is that he needs to drink more water. The little bits of poop in there shows he is a bit constapated so give him water and teddy grahams for snacks. The diaper rash and runny nose sounds like 2 year molars coming in. Some of the worse diaper rashes I have seen have been from teething eye teeth and 2 year molars. I am surprised that he isn't having a bit of diarrhea and a low fever with that.

my son is 15 months and is the exact same way right now. acting totally fine but lots of diapers to change he is on day 4 of it though and day 2 was like you described. Each diaper i change has more and more solid poop. since everything else was fine i counted it as being his teeth as he has 1 molar and all 4 canines on the way through his gums. perhaps it is a bit of a flu like thing. i havn't taken my son to the Doctor since he has showed improvement and eating, sleeping and drinking with no fever. if i were you if he seems ok then dont take him to the dr make sure he keeps tons of fluids going in to balance out all that is being expelled. my mom always told me that it is best to let loose stools run their course rather then trying to plug them up because the "bad" stuff needs to get out of the body but if you want to help him some give him bananas, and cheese and if it gets really bad you can boil milk then cool it quickly and have him drink it, it helps gel things up in his tummy. If you start to think he is getting worse or if he really starts to get worn down then see the Dr. i hope he gets better soon:)

They say children under 2 years don't usually have allergies. So I would guess a cold. But due to the yuckie diapers, you may want to call your Dr. The swine flu can cause an upset stomach, so better to be safe than sorry. But keep in mind this is most likely a cold. Also even though it is the weekend you can still call your Dr. office and be able to get in touch with the on-call Dr. for that group.

I am not sure about the sneezing...but my son went through a phase where he developed a TERRIBLE diaper rash. I took him to the doctor several times and all he said was that maybe John Michael was super sensitve to the acidity in his bowels. I ended up have to used a wash cloth and warm water to wipe him and corn starch to cool off the area and try to keep him dry. Any diaper rash creams would burn him even more...it was very unpleasent. I just thought I'd share that in case you need to look at other ways to manage his diaper rash.
