9 Month Old Screeching

I'm not sure if anyone has any ideas or not, but my 9 month old has started to make this horrible sounding screechy whine. She does this mostly when she is restrained (high chair, carseat, etc). I don't really know how to handle it. I've tried ignoring it so as to not draw attention to it. I've tried putting my finger on her mouth & saying no. I've tried to teach her to say "all done" in sign language". I've tried removing her to her playpen--which works to stop the screech, but it's not always an option. She has started to do this in public now also-which is really annoying (to me & others). Does anyone have any ideas on how to guide her into NOT SCREECHING???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone that responded! You were all right, she was just finding her voice. As soon as she discovered a new consonant (mamamama), that is all she would say. Now she's moved on to tapping her mouth with her hand to hear the change in sound.
THANKS AGAIN!!

M. daughter did that too. They were head piercing ones. luckily she's out grown it.
She's just found her voice and is telling you she wants out.
Try putting some toys on her highchair to keep her from getting bored.
I'm also guessing she is telling she doesn't like being strapped in. Most little ones don't.
Good luck!

J.

M. son used to do the same thing and I finally gave in and attached some of those chain links to both his high chair and his carseat. I used all kinds of them that had different textures and they kept him occupied while he was in the car or after he ate. They were a godsend. And they arent expensive only like a buck a package, plus they are supposed to help with hand eye coordination.

hmmm, that's got to be frustrating. sounds like a lot of mommies have gone through the same thing. Here's a thought: we taught our little one to sign as well, but along with "all done" we taught her signs like ouch or pain, eat, more, and change(as in, diaper change). This way she can tell us a little more than just scream. Not saying that it always worked, but it helped! Just a thought. Or, she could be bored or her carseat/high chair freaks her out.

This sounds like she has just found her voice. There is nothing wrong with it and you are probably more sensitive to it than others are when you are out in public. It could also be separation anxiety. 9 months is just about when this starts. M. daughter is now 10.5 months and still going through it but it is getting better. Good luck!

A.,
M. daughter at 14 months still does this. She does it when she want something. She mostly does it when we are in a store and she sees clothing (she loves holding her clothes to go check out) I have found that she will carry on if I ignore her, but it seems to be only one or two screeches when I tell her what she wants and why she cannot have it. For example, "I know you want the clothes, but you do not need any more clothes" I have found that showing her I understand what she wants helps a lot. Good luck!

I dont know if this is the same or not, but M. 6 month old son has just discoverd screeching also. He does it when his is in his jumper, especially if we are busy with dinner or something. I think he does it to get our attention. It is very loud and can be tough to listen to sometimes, but all in all we have fun with it. Usually I will do the same thing back to him and he finds it very funny. Im sure she will grow out of it.
