I have a 7 month old girl who has had congestion, stuffy nose since being a newborn. It seems like it never goes away. When she was a little younger, she suffered from what we believe was allergies. We had taken all the cold and flu remedies recommended like humidifier, nose spray, aspirator, steam baths, warm baths with vapor bath, elevated bed etc. It lingered for 3 weeks at the time and when we took her to the doc he diagnosed her with the famous Allergies. However this was a few months ago, since then, she has had the cold and we treated her for the cold. Now we are past that the poor thing is still stuffy but nothing wants to come out. I thought it may be allergies again so i gave her allergy meds the other day....it didn't seem to help that much, then i did my usual cold remedies and still stuffy. I spray nose stuff in her nose and try to plunge it with the aspirator but nothing comes out. She also has wet cough soon after eating and you can hear it rattle in her chest. I know its the milk and not phlem but i feel so bad. I want to clear her nose terribly and don't know what to do at this point. Do you think its allergies to her formula, she is teething heavy right now could it be the teeth. So confused.....

What can I do next?

Coughs and stuffy noses in children can last 4-6 weeks. I know it sounds like such a long time but that is what my pediatrician told me when I was concerned with my boys have a cough or congestion for more than a week. That is if it's a cold.
She could also have a runny nose and fever from teething. I know several parents who's kids always had runny noses and fevers due to this.
I hope I was able to give you some relief. Good Luck C.

Hey! My son has allergies as well. What allergy medication is he on? Maybe you need to switch it up. I know we had to switch it with my son and found one that really worked. With Zyrtec and his new medication he has to be on it for several days before we see relief. He's been on it for up to 15-30 days at a time. Do you have any pets? She may be allergic to them and until you get rid of them she may not get better. I know it's tough, believe me I've been there. My two year old will tell me...nose hurts :( Poor thing. But in rainy times of the year, like now, me and him are just about constantly stuffy/runny nose/cough, etc. Good luck!! Let us know what you have come up with!

I would suggest maybe getting a second opinion from another Pediatrician if you are unsure about your
current pediatricians diagnosis.

Hey, R.~ My daughter is almost 7 mos and we are in teething hell. She's always had a stuffy nose for different reasons and my thought is that she got her mama's sinuses :) From colds, to pollen, to now teething. Snot is just all over the place (nice visual, huh?). Is your daughter drooling and/or have a low grade temp? These are signs of teething and maybe that's what's going on. Whatever the reason, I hope y'all work it out and that little punkin gets relief soon!

My mom says I had a runny nose my entire childhood--which makes since since I STILL have congestion most days--and yes it is allergies for me. They are especially bad in the spring and Fall--and with winter colds, I get little relief!
Have you tried to remove possible allergens? Pets? old carpet? change filters on your a/c regularly. Also check window sills--I'm allergic to molds/midews and just a little on my window sill would set me off.
Food allergies can also cause congestion--particularly milk.
If you are bottle-feeding, you may want to consider removing cow's milk from her diet for a couple of weeks and see if anything improves.
You can also get a hospital grade air cleaners for her room which are expensive but work.
Besides allergies though--this has been a horrible cold season. No joke, both my son and I did not go over two weeks without being sick from Halloween until May, and now after 4 weeks of no cold, but my son has yet another! Compared to last year when we both had maybe 2 or 3...

Are you breastfeeding her as well? My daughter was same way and it was the formula/milk I took her off milk. She was tested and allergic to other foods such as wheat and eggs we were also living in an apt that was fully carpeted so it was twice as bad we moved out since it wasn't our place to tile thru out and have kept her from foods that cause the allergy. The teeth had nothing to do with congestion for my little one so I would try to remove dairy and I only use over the counter liquid zyrtec ....I know right then what does she eat I made hot cereal like Cream of Wheat/Cream of Rice Oatmeal with just hot water & little sugar to sweeten thin enough to sip from bottle and checked with nutrition regarding calcium and vitamins she may need supplemtal - this is only my suggestion - hope & pray all goes well and she can get some relief because it is definitely not easy to watch them suffer like that .......

My daughter is almost 8 now, but was chronically conjested and infected in her sinus/chest as a little one until the age of 4!!! We had ALL the allergies tests done and she wasn't allergic to ANYTHING....wierd, I thought. On a whim someone told me to try taking her off ALL dairy products. I did and with 2 weeks a HUGE difference in the amount of mucous she was producing. Now know that the doc's don't hold any credance to this but it worked for us. She had been on constant antibiotics from birth til 4 and hasn't been on one since we made the switch. Don't get me wrong, she still gets a cold and sometimes is conjested but NOTHING like before. Good luck, I feel your frustration.

I'm not sure if you've tried any alternative medicine, but it just seems odd that she's had this since birth. The birthing process is very traumatic on babies as well as the mother. Sometimes their spine become misaligned in this process and needs to be gently adjusted. Chiropractic actually works with the nervous system through spinal adjustments. Your baby may just need to have her spine checked. We see lots of babies in our office and they get great results. If you'd like more information about us or just want to learn more about chiropractic please feel free to email me at ____@____.com luck and congratulations on your new baby girl.

It sounds as though you've had a lot of good responses and suggestions. I tend to lean more toward Mimi's comments. Every year, because of all the chemicals and toxins that we're surrounded by, our children and elderly suffer even more. The statistics are on the rise. Even though we can't change the world around us by tomorrow, we can change what's in our homes. I had to switch my son to Soy when he was 5 months old. I was so congested all the time and we were learning that he had asthma. I ciropractor told me this and I confirmed it with his doctor. He still gets congested but not as much as before.
You might start taking her to her doctor on a regular bases for the congestion so that they can start trying different things. He son also takes Zyrtec to help with congestion. But I would check with the doc for the right dose for a 7 month old.

If it has been going on for months with little to no relief it is time to see a doctor. My recommendation is to contact an ear-nose-throat "ENT" doctor who specializes in this and you will want to find one that has experience with young children. Don't worry about what it could be - you could worry yourself to death. Just have it checked, it may be as simple as her needing some stronger medicine to finally kick it but have her looked at, x rayed, and whatever else needs to be done to resolve this issue so that you can all sleep better.

My daugher went through the same thing after we stopped breastfeeding. She has had severe food and outdoor allergies. She was constantly sick with ear infections, congestion that would lead to bronc. She had her first asthma attack at 2 years. I may be an extreme case but it is something to be aware of. It seems these days our children are more suceptable to allergies than when I was a kid.
