I am beginning to get concerned about my daughter complaining of stomach pain. She previously had a UTI at the end of September and again 2 weeks ago. She just finished her antibiotics last tuesday and started saying her stomach hurt again on wednesday. Could there be something more than a UTI? Anything in particular I should ask the doctor to have her tested for? They have only done urine tests on her and have said she has a UTI. I have stopped her from taking baths and has been taking showers since this last incident. This evening she again said her stomach hurts, not sure what to think, she says that she does not have a burning sensation when she pees. Any other medical conditions to have her checked for? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I would like to thank all of you who responded. I took my daughter to the doctor this morning and they told me that the last two incidents that I was told as a UTI it was not. They did another urine test and it was negative. The doctor felt her tummy and thinks she may be constipated and to keep track of her bowel movements. Advised to give her fresh fruits and vegs and to incorporate more fiber in her diet and if pain continues to schedule another appointment. Will try this and see if maybe that is what it could be if not I will have to make another appointment. I hope all of you have a wonderful New Year! Thank you again for your suggestions.

Because she just finished antibiotics, you may want to look into probiotics and products & diet to combat yeast overgrowth.

My daughter, who is 9, complained of stomach aches on and off for a while. The doctor did not have a good explanation. Based on advice from a friend, I started having my daughter drink lactose-free milk, instead of regular milk. She has had no more stomach aches. It might be worth a try - the grocery stores sell the lactose-free milk in quart containers, so it is not a big investment if it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Good luck!

Hi E.,

In the past year we learned that our youngest daughter has reflux in both kidneys. Stomach pain was a common complaint everytime she would get an infection. It wouldn't hurt to rule it out because we didn't know for years (6 to be exact) that she had urine reflux in both kidneys. She now has permenant damage to her left kidney from all the infections and just had surgery to both kidneys to fix the reflux in Indianapolis, IN at Riley Children's Hospital.
Good luck to you.

I would ask for an ultrasound to view what is inside her belly. Have no idea but I would not let it go w/out an ultrasound or an xray. Could she be allergic to some sort of food. She could have a kidney infection instead of just the UTI. Bladder infection that has not gone away from antibiotics, not sure what age you could get a cyst on your ovaries but I know a friend who had pains and it was a cyst....etc When you call to make the appt you should request the time slot for an ultrasound, otherwise, you go in and then they tell you that you have to set up another appt for the ultrasound or either to to another location to have it done. Do it all in one more appt.

Good luck,

I too have a 6 year old daughter and we struggle with UTI infections. Having her drink Cranberry Juice has helped a lot. Look at the label and find ones that are Cranberry Juice concentrate. We use Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail from concentrate with no high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors or flavor. Under ingredients it reads filtered water, cranberry juice from concentrate, cane or beet sugar, ascorbic acid. We have also used R.W. Knudsen Just Cranberry - but it can be harder to find. A relative also suggested that we soak her in the bathtub with cider vinegar and water. This too has seemed to help. Also encouraging her to go potty frequently will help as well. We don't let our daughter take baths either, except when we are soaking her in cider vinegar. I try to get her to drink 8oz. of cranberry juice in the morning when she gets up, when she gets home from school and in the evening before bed. We have tried to make this a daily routine.

From those I've talked to it seems that some people have never had a problem with UTI's and others have struggled with them all their lives.

Not to offend you but make sure she is not being curious about her private that causes it when they masturbate getting to know there own bodies, Mother of 2 girls and 2 boys here all age range,,, its not uncommon!!.
Just a suggestion to watch out for, as well as her using T.P properly front to back so she is not getting bacteria in her vagina. or not wiping at all and it drips in the undies bacteria can grow all day. might sound gross but smell her panties for fowl oder that would be a sign, also do you go in and make sure she is washing well in the shower? I use feminine wash and have my girls use it also and it has helped my youngest same age of having these issues, she is 10 now and has not had any U TI now since. Many soaps have dyes and chemicals, perfumes that can help cause such infections. Also if they are upset stressed, emotional problems will cause tummy pain, attention, someone else messing with her GOD HOPE NOT, but that is a symptom and it dont hurt to ask your baby if she has been touched by anyone and taught that not to be afraid to tell you if so... My heart goes out to you with such issues I have had my fair share with my children, If you need any advice I am here, Hope you get it all cleared up GoodLuck.

If the good bacteria were gone from her stomach she would have severe diarrhea along with the stomach pain. If she does I would take her to the MD.

Hi E.,

I am sorry you are going through this with your daughter. I can empathize with how you are feeling as I shared a similiar experience with my now 5 y/o daughter from February 2008-August 2008. My daughter was complaining daily about stomach pain and the ped, GI specialist, continued tests all turned up normal. We were exploring the possibility of stress related abdominal pain, allergic coilitis and both the ped and specialist kept pushing a variety of meds to help her with her problem.

In August of 2008 my path crossed with a Certified Nutritionist, near Nashville and after a computerized scan(pain free, btw) and a nutritional supplement my daughter has been pain free. The computerized scan revealed that my daughter was suffering from parasites and once we detoxed her body of them she no longer had problems. Parasites are very common in 80-90% of the human population and can cause many of the health issues we see these days.

It might be helpful to suggest a test for parasites but be prepared for false negative test results, meaning parasites very well may be the problem but the test results come back negative.

I'm sorry you are going through this. If you would like more information about our experience please feel free to email me offline.

Peace,
J.

The antibiotic could be making her stomach hurt. It kills all the bacteria. Maybe try some yogurt. If she does not like yogurt make or buy the smoothies. Also is she wiping properly, from front to back. If she is wiping from back to front she could be transferring the bacteria from BM into her urinary tract.

Sometimes when it is a bladder infection people don't have a burning sensation. I would definitely take her back and tell the MD what she is experiencing. The UTI could have traveled and depending on the antibiotics...may not have been completely killed.

My son has been complaining of stomach aches for a while (absent of any other symptoms). I finally took him to the doctor, who said that kids manifest stress with tummy aches, just as adults do with headaches. Before the Christmas break from school, he started wanting to stay home because of the tummy aches, and even would go whining to the nurse's office, so they'd call me to come get him. Then I'd find him playing dodge ball in PE, so I think he was just needing a break from school, and he hasn't complained of any since he's been home.

However, with your daughter's situation there may be more going on. As mentioned, especially if she's been through multiple rounds of antibiotics, the gut can get really jacked up from the good bacteria all getting killed off. My aunt nearly died from this (toxic mega colon) and had much of her colon resected, which saved her life at the last second. Adding good probiotics to her diet would help with this, and give a serving twice a day. I took my son to a Naturopathic Physician (ND) for some issues, and she explained that 70% of our immunity comes from our gut. In addition to the probiotics, she recommended rubbing castor oil (you can find it in the pharmacy, sometimes you have to ask at the counter) into the tummy at bedtime, in a clockwise motion. It's good stuff, and might give some psychological relief to your daughter. But be persistent if you think there is more going on and get the doctor's attention. Pay attention to her stools and such. Ruined kidneys lead to a lifetime of troubles.

E.,

When I was in first grade I complained of stomach pain for several weeks. After much testing it turned out there was a problem with kidney infections. Keep in mind, that has been over forty years ago, but it may be worth checking out.

I just had a persistent dull ache, no sharp pains, no problems with urination, but felt miserable.

Hope your daughter gets to feeling better soon.

I haven't read your previous posts, but there's always a possibility that it's not medical at all. Children will sometimes have physical symptoms for emotional things. Is there a certain time of day that she usually complains about her tummy?

Have here kidneys checked. My granddaughter had several UTI's in a row and it effected her kidneys. She now has to take meds for that. I hope in your daughters case I am wrong and that it is something simple but I would have it checked.

Good luck,

When she says 'stomach', does she hold her upper tummy (actual stomach), or her lower tummy (abdomen)? Could be anything (appendicitis, gas, indigestion/constipation, allergy, nerves, etc) but you can at least rule out some stuff. Monitor what she eats and how her bowels move, WHEN she has the pain (all day, after eating, at night, in the a.m. of school days, etc), make sure she drinks plenty of fluids (preferrably some of it water), make sure she's not fevered, etc, etc.

Hope you find out and hope it's minor!

First, I would try to make sure it isn't constipation. My son has bouts of stomach pain, and he always has great relief once he has a BM. If it continues though, you should definately have her checked.

It could be that it didn't go completely away. It could be that the line inside her is kinked and causing the urine to stand stagnant in her bladder not letting it drain properly. It could be an intestinal thing such as something with her bowel or a virus in the intestines... it could be alot worse and then it could be something very simple that is worthless. Regardless.... I would stress my concern with her pediatrician and even ask that she see a pediatric GI doc for peace of mind.
Good luck, I hope it is nothing, just a few growing pains and digestion movements.

When does she do this? In the a.m. on getting up? Does she do this when she does not have to go to school? My daughter and grandson both have had these issues. #1 post nasal drip caused stomach problems, #2 ADD (both have mild ADD) one of the symptoms is stomach issues, #3 anxiety. Chart it and see when it is most prevalent.
