5 Year old...back Problem?

Wasn't sure exactly what to put as the subject... :p. About a year ago, my 5 year old was sitting on one of the rungs of the bunk bed ladder. He kind of jumped/fell down and the run above the one he was sitting on pushed very h*** o* his spine. One of the vertebrae got...pushed in (for lack of a better way of explaining this!). If you run your finger up his spine and feel all the little bumps, he has a spot where it goes in a good 1/2 inch or so...instead of sticking out like the rest of them. I feel like I'm doing a hideous job of explaining this! Anyway...the next day, I took him in to the Dr...they had X-rays done. The doctor said that since he is moving fine and not in pain...it's not a problem. The X-rays did not show anything that he felt was concerning. It's been a year and I don't know if I should be concerned? Backs just make me nervous, y'know? I'm afraid that as he grows it will become more of a problem. It makes me think of a tower of little square blocks...if a couple of them in the middle are slightly off centered...the tower just isn't as strong and can't hold up as well. And it just doesn't look right! (not from a cosmetic point of view...but you know what I mean) Anyway...What are you thoughts? Should I call the doctor up and request a second opinion? Should I make an appointment with a chiropractor? Should I just not worry about it? He's extremely active, agile, strong, etc...it hasn't effected anything at this point...What do you think?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I can still feel the 'bump' (I think)...it just feels like it's "in"...if that makes sense. I'm already asking around in my area to see if there's a good chiropractor someone can recommend...and we'll go from there! Thanks again!

I would take him to a chiropractor for an examination. They specialize in spine alignment. A reputable chiropractor should also refer you to another medical doctor if they feel it may be necessary.

I would say that it's still there and I would like an orthopedist to look at it (whoever would treat scoliosis and similar conditions) just to be sure he's doing well.

Chiropractors are experts at misalignment due to stress or accidents. Though probably any chiropractor could do a good job, you should be able to find some in your area who are expert with children. If your son's back looks "not right," chances are good that it can cause him grief in the future. And the longer you wait to get it treated, the more "set" it is likely to become.

My kids have been adjusted since day one by the chiropractor..I'd be there in a heartbeat if I were you! If it grows wrong it could cause problems. You have a right to be nervous, the spinal cord houses the nervous system, controlling all bodily function..not something to mess with!

I would take him to a chiropractor. My daughter has gone since birth. It may not bother him now, but in a few more years it could become much worse. If they x-ray didn't show a break it is probably just the vertebrae out of alignment.

Was this advice from his pediatrician? I would ask for a referral to an orthopedist. I have used chiropractors in the past but for my "true" spinal injuries (I have had multiple fusions in the past 9 years) I needed an orthopedist. Spines scare me as well!

Yes, he is set up for a good back problem as he gets older. Your concerns are justified. Get him to a good chiropractor to get him straightened out. If you live in the Utah County area, I would be happy to direct you to several good ones.

So he is missing a bump on a his spine?

Ok I am linking to drawing of a spine:

Now notice where the bones have that portusion? That likely broke off. Is it likely to cause issues down the road that he doesn't have it? I would assume unlikely. If you still want to follow up you can but they are not going to put a cast on his whole midsection for X weeks for it.
