23 Month Old Keeps Taking Out Her Earrings

Hello,

I got my daughters ears pierced back in Feb 2008. For some reason she is taking them out. I have lost quite a few sets. Luckily not expensive one's, but I do not want them to close. I have used the rubber backs, regular backs. Last weekend I bought small hoops hoping she couldn't get them out. Well she did. She's determined because they are so 'pretty'....as she says. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep them in?

What can I do next?

Sounds like she's not old enough to have pierced earrings. Letting the holes close and re-piercing them at a later date is not terrible; Her swallowing one or ripping her earlobe to remove it is much more concerning. Good luck.

My daughter is 3 and we had hers done in feb of this year also. She hasn't tried to take them out but i dont think she could if she tried. We got them done at walmart with the piercing studs and haven't changed them. There was only one time she got her earing caught in my hair and it came out. I have tried to get them out before when she had surgery in june on her ears and throat. The doctors said she couldn't have them in and she got so upset she kept saying "they wont go in if i take them out." I had the doctors put them back in before she woke up from surgery because i had such a hard time taking them out myself. Anyways i would try those. They were $12 and they were 14ct gold. Good luck i hope you find something that works.

I would keep them out & if they close, so be it. They are a choking hazard anyway. I'm due w/ a baby girl in 4 weeks & won't get her ears pierced until at least 6...but only if she asks. I would keep them out & have 1 less thing to have to stress over! Good luck!

My daugther is around the same age and we have used the backs that screw on. We haven't had any problems with her being able to get them out at all. Sometimes she will touch them, but has never been able to get them out.

Hi Mama!

My daughter did the same thing until recently. We took out her earrings for about 8 months with no problems. About once every week or two I would put them in just to make sure the hole did not close. There was one time that it took a bit more though to get them in (I waited over a month between trying)... she did not cry or even fuss although I cringed the whole time! lol

Recently she started asking to wear them again with all her other "bling" So she has several kids necklaces and bracelets that I put on at the same time and she forgets about pulling them out!

Be very careful with the hoops unless they have a safety type back so they will pop off rather than rip her ear. My daughter begs to wear my earrings all the time but I remember going to school with a girl who had both of hers ripped so I do not allow it.

The best backs I have found were at Walmart for about $2. or so for a pack of I want to say 30 backs. They are metal with rubber in the center. When I use those I even have a hard time taking them out at night!

Good luck and blessings to you!

I agree exactly with Traci C. I would take them out as that is dangerous for her. She could pull them out wrong, accidentally, and tear her ear. Or, she could choke on them or swallow them and have the end tear up her throat. Don't risk it, it's not worth it. She's too young for earrings like that. Maybe you can find some clip on's if you are still determined to have hear ears "pierced". Or, go buy some fingernail stickers and put them on her ears like earrings if you must.

I second the screwback or piercing stud ideas. Most jewelery stores carry "baby earrings" that are smaller and do have the screwbacks, but if they are real gold or white gold posts, any jeweler should be able to convert them for you...just ask around...

What's the big deal? Why force her to keep them in? If she doesn't want them in, keep them out. When she is old enough and decides she wants her ears pierced then, go for it. I have a baby girl and can't imagine piercing her ears before she wants them pierced and even if she does it won't be until she is in school.

DUH! I will be blunt. Just another reason not to have a child's ears pierced until they are ready/willing to take care of them. Let kids be kids. They grow up fast enough. Take them out and wait until she is of a more decent age.

Have you tried the earrings that have screw on backs? You may have to go to a jewelery store to get them and I think Carsons and JCPenny may carry them too. My daughter is 7 months and has her ears pierced, I have already begun to think about buying them BEFORE she discovers they can come out! :) Good Luck.

While they are not as many "cute" choices, we stick with the piercing studs for our daughter. She cannot get them off on her own and leaves them alone. You can purchase the studs at Walmart for about 12.00 or so. I used to buy them at a beauty supply store near me but they are now closed, but you might try looking at something like that fist. If those don't work, I agree she just isn't ready for them and you might want to let her holes close.

I have the earrings that is 23k gold and dont come out they have to be eventually cut. They are very thin and wound. Very close to ear, difficult to even grab. Even though my daughter never tried she is 2.5 year and had them on for 1.5 years.

All the Best! See what can work for you.
