Hi everyone,
My 2 year old son has been fighting his naps for the past week and a half.(and winning)This is totally out of character. When I check him he is usually standing up in his crib, not even acting tired.Believe me ladies,I have let him cry it out!(2 hours is my limit without signs of slowing down and I go get him)He usually plays with his toys/animals the first hour than he will get worked up.
Anyway my question is Could he possibly be dropping his nap at this young age? He dropped his first nap very young, around 7-8 months and did fine. How young has other children done this?I would appreciate any advice!!!!Thank you so much!!

What can I do next?

try changing the nap time to two hours after you think it should be- obviously the time you're going for is not working...or try earlier...just try different times...a 'rule' I learned is not to let a baby cry any longer than his weight- meaning if he's 25lbs then he should cry no longer than 25minutes...

L.,

I could be that he is ready to stop taking naps. My oldest son stopped taking naps at 2, my second son didn't stop until 3 1/2 and he is now 5 and now my third son who is 2 1/2 still takes naps for the most part. There are days few and far between that he refuses to take a nap. Don't push the naps. I know that mommy's need breaks to, something that I have found that works. I let my youngest tire himself out then sit him down to watch one of his favorite videos and he usually passes out watching it.

Good luck.

Yeap! I have twins. One kept her nap until she was past age three. It felt like the other twin stopped napping before her second birthday. Play with the time but, your child may not meed it and you should respect that and trust your child. Also, I have noticed that brighter children need less naps.

It's very possible. My son started phasing out naps by the time he was 2. He's 28 months now and usually doesn't take any nap at all -- sometimes, if he's really tired, we'll get him to sleep during the day, but on those days it's extremely difficult to get him to sleep at night before 11 pm.

I wouldn't use the "cry it out" method for naps. It just isn't worth the hassle. You can just put him to sleep earlier at night on days when he doesn't take a nap.

You should recheck the Ferber method. It NEVER says to let your child "cry it out for hours". It does say that you should little by little stand outside the room, come in to reassure him, go out a little longer and back in and so on. Dr. Ferber has made it very clear that it was never his intention for people to think that leaving your child to cry for long periods of time was advisable. He is probably missing your attention and feeling a little untrusting of you being there. It happens. Try loving him and comforting him and so what if he doesn't take a nap. Is that worse than crying for 2 hours? (Personally, I think missing a nap is better than that!)
