I am a 31yr old mother of 3 wonderful boys. 14yr, 12yr and a 13 month old.(we waited a while for the 3rd one.) My question is, my 13 month old little boy is still getting up 2 an 3 times a night. My other boys did not do this. They were sleeping all night very early on. And I know all kids are different, but is this normal and is there an age where most infants start sleeping all night? I didnt work with my first 2 boys but I am working outside the home with this one and the no sleeping thing is really hard when you have to get up a 6 every morning an go to a job.....Is there anything I can do to help him sleep or do I just have to wait it out??

What can I do next?

I hate to tell you this that my 5yr old almost to be 6 still doesn't sleep thru the night most of the time. Infact when she was about 2 or 3 the doctor ordered a sleep study and we found out it is medical more than anything so it makes it easier to deal with cause there really isn't anything I can do for her except just put her back to her bed and if she is really having problems then I make a pallet on the floor for her. She suffers from reflux and she never gets to relm sleep is the reason for her not sleeping. Just recently she sleeps more thru the night so I hope she is outgrowing it.

I know how you feel! My son is four, and he sleeps through the night now...if he's sleeping with me! But he still wakes up once at night if he's not. Not every night, anymore, but still a lot. He's easy to get back to sleep, but it can still be a pain!
When he wakes up, he's usually not really fully awake, so I carry him back to his bed, and lay down with him for a minute or two until he's really out, then head back to my bed, or if I'm too tired, I sleep right there with him. Sometimes I just put him in bed with me and we both fall back to sleep, and I'll wake up a few minutes later and put him back in his bed. Works 95% of the time.
He has good nights and bad nights, and I really couldn't tell you what exactly you can do to break the habit, other than lay him back down each time and tell him to go back to sleep.
Just know I know how you feel!

It's completely normal. My 19 month old still has a hard time sleeping through. The first time he made it through the night was last month.

When I talked to his pediatrician, he suggested that I make the room as dark as possible. I put up curtains and took out the nightlight. He did sleep better and longer.

The 2 older boys do they play with the 13 month old up until it is close to bedtime? I was wondering becasue I found when my sons where little they were -of course typical hyper boys but the older kids would get them overstimulated with play or let them see something that was scary on tv etc. I found that alot of stimulation even an hour before bed caused him to be more jittery in sleep. I have heard the same is true for certain snack w/ msg etc. It also may be that the wake ups are mild and he will go back to sleep it's just that you go to him too quickly out of natural motherly habit. They say they can learn to self soothe but it takes time to get them in the routine. Try timing him a few minutes to see if it works but you want to be sure follow through. Another trick is (don't laugh) oatmeal if he will eat, warm oatmeal w milk before bed old fashioned trick. Yeah going back to work we Moms learn to run on very little or just sleep walk when needed. Good luck S. M.

Get the book "No Cry Sleep Solution" By jodi mendell. Works, be patient with it. Our son started sleeping 12 hours a night at 6 months old, thank to that book! No crying it out either!!!

Hi,
I'm not sure if this will make you feel any better but I am in the same boat. I have a 16 mth old and he still gets up every now and then but it's my 4 year old that gets up and still gets in the bed with us. If we put him back in his room he will get up as many times as we lay him down. I don't have any advise for this but sometimes it helps to know that your not on your own.

My oldest daughter slept through the night From the day she was born but my younger daughter is 17 months old and still gets up sometimes, not as much but it was every night up to about 13 months. I haven't found that doing anything different helps. So if you find something that works let me know!!!

My son, age 16 months, may go through two or three nights in a row and sleep all night. These times are rare. He will wake up sometimes 2 or 3 times but not ask to get up. I just slip his paci back in his mouth and lay him back over. He's so sleepy anyway he goes right back off. I asked the doctor yesterday if this is normal and she said yes. Some kids do this especially if they are going through a change or growth time.

Conor was 18 months (sigh) before he would sleep through the night... and still will get up in the middle of the night periodically. Does you child wake up hungry/ wet/ needing something? Or is he just up?

My only child was a 10-pounder, so at 18 months (and at almost 4 years) he eats good meals and lots of (healthy) snacks. So that was a big sleep issue. And, according to a pediatrician who is a friend of the family, many times really curious kids refuse to sleep because they want to do so much. He could just have been telling me that to make me feel better!

As a working mother, I feel your pain!

Hi, My first didn't sleep through the night until we took him off the bottle. (Around 12 months) He was waking up for it. We took it away and a few nights he cried and I gave him a sippy cup and he decided the sippy wasn't worth waking up for.

A friend of mine was breast feeding and her 14 month old was waking up 3 to 4 times a night for it and she finally had to put ear plugs in and let him cry it out!
