Runny Poop... Food Allergies?

I'm breastfeeding my two month old daughter, and she's had liquid poop for the last two weeks or so. The first six weeks, she had the normal poop for breastfeeding babies (mostly liquid with the little seedy stuff). Now, her poop is brown, completely liquid with a little bit of clingy stuff but not chunks, and smells like sulfur. She only goes once or twice a day, so it's not diarrhea. She's not dehydrated or running a fever or any fussier than she usually is. Her doctor doesn't know what it is and said to watch her and bring her in if she gets dehydrated or it doesn't go away in a week.

I overheard a lady in a breastfeeding class say that her daughter had liquid poop, and that it was from food allergies. Has anyone else had issues with runny poop or their child having food allergies?

What can I do next?

I'm wondering if you've changed anything in your diet lately that would cause her to have changes. Is she exclusively breast fed? If so, it would have to be something you've eaten that caused her stools to change. Are you taking any medication, different vitamin, anything like that? As long as she's still nursing good, and not dehydrated, I wouldnt' worry too much!

Hi M.. I currently am breastfeeding my daughter as well. She is four months old and has had runny poop since the beginning. Everyone I have talked too said that as long as I don't see anything else like dehydration, rash, fever, etc. That it is completely normal for breastfed babies to have pretty runny poop.

Hi, M.. I had problems with my twins when they were infants. I finally got a 2nd opinion because their pediatrician, didn't seem to listen to me, however I am glad I did. If you have to take your daughter to a GI doctor I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Susan Maisel at St. Vincents Childrens Hospital off 86th Street on the Northwest side of Indy. She did some GREAT things for my son.
Good luck with your baby girl!

I'm worried that you say it smells life sulfur...doesn't sound right at all...I would make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
If I were you and my doc was not certain, I would seek a second opinion, preferably that of a pediatric GI specialist, maybe someone through Riley if you are here in Indy, otherwise see if your physician can refer you to a good one.

I have not read any of the other responses... but I'd say cut back the garlic, onion and no strawberries. Good luck with your Princess! <3

My sister's baby had similar symptoms and it's believed that he might be slightly lactose intolerant. She cut dairy out of her diet and switched to Silk Soy milk until he was about 6 months old. She then slowly introduced dairy back into her diet and he was fine. Lactose intolerance runs in her husband's family, though, so it wasn't much of a surprise. Now, her son is eating yogurt and cottage cheese without any problems.

My son went through that stage too. I think it was a symptom of a bad case of heartburn or acid reflux. They can sometimes have diahrea instead of spit up. Try giving your baby some medicine. We had good luck with the Mylanta Supreme Cherry. It tasted much better than the mint flavored baby Zantac the doctor gave us. Check out this website about infant reflux.

My 3 yr old has poop just like that. She gets it if she eats anything with Lactose, juice, or high fructose corn syrup in it. Try eliminating those foods one at a time( no lactose for one week, no high fructose corn syrup for one week) from your diest and see if it improves. Intolerance can happen even after a child has been getting those foods with no problem before.

Obviously at 2 months old she wouldn't be on solids, so I am assuming it is something you are eating. I wouldn't worry too much about it since it's not diarrhea. My baby was breastfed too and she had some runny diapers for the first 3 months or so. As far as reactions to food, some major food allergies come from tomatoes, peas, honey, nuts, and eggs. If you consume a lot of one of these foods, maybe stop eating it for awhile and see if it makes a difference.

My girl is 5 months and just starting solids. She's a breatfeed baby too. From what you say sounds similar to my baby's diapers from time to time. I can't think it would be allergies if all she's getting is breastmilk. You haven't been eating anything odd/different in the past several weeks? If it really is worrying you call your doctor. Trust me, they are used to new moms haveing questions.
