Anybody Familiar with Rectal Prolapse?

I'm a little nervous because my daughter has had now three episodes of rectal prolapse. We are in touch with a pediatric GI doc who is affiliated with Emory and I assume we'll be figuring out the reason soon. What I'm really hoping for is that some of you will respond and tell me you've experienced this and everything turned out fine. I've read up on possible causes. I don't think she's malnourished or has malabsorption -- she's got good color/good energy levels/ etc. I don't think she's dehydrated -- no dry eyes, dark urine, etc. If it were pinworms, with all time I've been spending around her bottom lately, I'd know. We're having a sweat test for Cystic Fibrosis and I'm praying the hardest that that's not the problem!!! I'm just very concerned and would love to hear from anyone who's been here and what the end results were.

So What Happened?

Okay, now it's April 14th. Long saga finally over. Samantha had her colonoscopy this morning at Eggleston. The prep is no fun! Still the end of the story here is that her GI came out and told us that he found and removed three polyps. So, what I thought was rectal prolapse was actually an enormous polyp -- gross! But the good news is that they are almost positive everything was benign and all of her difficulties (pain, bleeding, difficulty going potty) are behind (har, har) her now!!!

It is so obvious that you are a great Mom. You have already done your homework! Once you have test results you can go from there. Kids handle all this so much better than we do! Remember that many issues can be handled with nutrition and supplements. God made our bodies and they are fine functioning machines and all we have to do is figure out where the short circuit is and then we can deal with it. Just look at all your options once you get some more answers. I think Mimi was right on with her comments too. I haven't been where you and she have been but I have seen many people overcome health issues with the natural approach and live great lives with just a few moderations to diet and/or lifestyle. Keep us posted and I too will be praying for you and your daughter! It is so hard when little ones have something wrong and we don't know what it is. All we can do is put them into God's hands! I have 11 children and have had enough times when that was all I could do. If I take his hands out of the equation I fall to pieces! Hope some of this helps even if I don't have personal knowledge of the issue itself. May you be granted peace!

Sincerely,
K.

I am familiar with rectal prolapse. Happened once to my daughter almost 2yrs ago. She was 3yrs old at the time. Scared me so much. She was born with a intestine blockage and had to have emergency surgery when she was 6 days old. Thank the good Lord above, all went very well. She started having severe constipation problems when we started to potty train her. Her pediatrician put her on Glycolax (synthetic stool softner) which she still takes every day. I had backed off on the dosage when she had her prolapse, straining to use the potty. We were sent to have a Cystic Fibrosis test, like you, and that came back negative. She had some xrays of her bowels and some other blood work done at the lab when we took her to see the pediatric GI. She has since never had this happen again, and continues on the stool softner daily. The pediatric GI has seen her every 6months after the prolapse and he believes it was just and isolated incident where she just strained way too hard. He released her from his care this past January on our last visit. Is your child on a stool softner and have constipation problems? I know just how you feel, the not knowing what it is, is the worst part. Keep praying and leave it in God's hands. It will all work out.

Hi D.,

It sounds like you are well read and have really been digging deep. I had ulcerative colitis as a child and although I never had the prolapse, it was discussed around me often. One problem you didn't mention is the straining from constipation or even straining just sitting on the potty. Has she had any of that? That can be caused by lack of enough water (or malabsorption of it) and lack of fiber which is not common in diets these days. It can also be caused by her not knowing how to push.

Crohns is a digestive disorder that can remedied a lot easier than most think, as was my UC, after I finally figured out diet is tremendously important. When they discovered my UC they took away fiber, calcium and added dangerous meds that have caused me heartache well into my adult years. Please investigate thoroughly before you give her any meds. I would be glad to give you my insight if you wish.

I have also heard of Cystic Fibrosis causing rectal prolapse as well but don't know anything about that...the sweat test should give you insight. DON"T PANIC, I know how hard it is when your little one is involved and don't jump to a remedy before you investigate outside of the doctors that recommend it. There are usually options. (I don't resent or begrudge my Mom but I do wish she had looked further when they found my colitis.)

If you would like to talk, before OR after they have come to a diagnosis, I would be glad to lend an ear. I'll also be praying for you and your little one...

God bless,

M.

Hi D.,
I did have experience with this issue. My son was six months old when he had a rectal myomectomy (spelling). The problem was after being on breast milk, other liquids and foods made stools thicker. He had difficulty with BMs and rectal prolapse). Anyway, after a lower GI, the doctor determined a nerve did not develop properly and did surgery to clip the nerve. Never was there another problem. He is now 15 :) Good Luck, and I'll say a prayer about the sweat test!

D., I wish I could tell you what may be causing this, but I am not sure. I can help you with concerns of CF if they say that is what it is. My son had it. If you are seeing Dr.'s at Emory or Egleston You are in wonderful hands and I am sure they will find the cause soon. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us updated or feel free to email me.

Hi D.,

I too was an Army brat all my life and have been in the Army myself. I sometimes find it hard to stay in one place. I have been living in metro Atlanta since 1999 and even moved to Maryland in 2004 for a year before deciding to move back to Atlanta. I think I will stay here for a while...

My daughter had a problem with constipation that started when she was 3 or 4 she still has problems sometimes. I went to so many doctors and only one could diagnose her. She was holding her bowels becuase it would hurt when she went. Dr. Saripkin is a pediatruc Gastrologist. He is awesome. You can look him up in the white pages. I had to change her diet to high fiber, fresh veggies and fruit, lots of water and juice. No junk food or soft drinks. Lots of excercise to start, but most of all I had to get through to her and tell her to stop holding it. She had to overcome her fear of being hurt when she would try to have a bowel movement. I pray that it all works out.
