I'm a Better Mom on Coffee

A letter to my girls:

Dear Girlies,

I’m just going to say it: You guys wear me out. That said, I’ve discovered the wonders of caffeine in recent weeks. I lived 34 years without drinking coffee, but one day, around 4 o’clock—my usual low-point—I had the not-so-novel idea that some caffeine may help me get through the hours before dinner. After only one cup, I thought, “This stuff is legal?!” I realized, since drinking the stuff, that I am probably a better mom on coffee. That is to say, when I have energy. Thus began my reflection on how I hope you might one day look back on our days together when you were little.

I hope you remember that we went for lots of hikes in the Valley so you could smell the fresh air and get in touch with nature, and not just the times I hoped you’d watch “Olivia” a little longer so I could sit still for a minute.

I hope you remember home-cooked meals and lots of fresh veggies and fruits, and not just the times I served chicken nuggets again because I was too exhausted to think about dinner.

I hope you remember that I talked to you patiently and calmly when you were having a rough day, and not just the times I said something like, “Because I said so.” Ugh.

I hope you remember that I listened to you and engaged in conversations with you, and not just the times I absentmindedly responded, “Mm-hmm” to something you were trying to tell me.

I hope you remember that I answered most of your questions thoughtfully, and not just the times I stopped responding because I was too tired to think of one more answer.

I hope you remember that I let you get messy in the sandbox, the flowerbeds, and in mud puddles, and not just the times I said, “Not today,” because I didn’t want to clean up the mess.

I hope you remember that I sat on the floor with you for lots of hours of reading and playing, and not just the times I asked you to entertain yourself so I could fold laundry or empty the dishwasher because I didn’t want to be doing those tasks at 10 o’clock.

I hope you remember that we ran through the sprinkler, played in the snow, and jumped in the leaves, and not just the times I said, “We don’t have time.”

I hope you remember that we spent hours reading together, making crafts, coloring, baking, imagining, exploring, and just being goofy. Mostly, I hope you remember me loving every minute of it. With or without coffee.

Love, Mama

I love this I was crying as I read it. I can't live without diet coke, in the morning and the p.m. exactly as you said. Our children depend on us for so much, it doesn't hurt to give ourselves a little nudge, as it helps them too.

I have drank coffee for years, but it took on a new meaning when I came across http://healthiercupofjoe.organogold.com both the coffee and tea are amazing. The energy burst from the organic coffee is great.

Hi
If coffee gives you energy and you can be a better mother, do it.
Up to 3 cups of coffee a day is fine. Anything you eat or drink too much that's not healthy, but three glasses a day and your children are happy, it's worth it.

Beautiful note although, wow, how'd you get through so many years w/o coffee?!? I've been drinking it since I was about 5 and my boys (all three!) know not to expect much out of me until I've had my first cup of coffee (I'm not human).

Yes, coffee (God first) is truly a blessing in disquise. My entire life, I never drank coffee until I realized I needed to stay up for almost 24 hours in a day for our wonderful daughter who is three years old. Not only do I have a cup in the morning (20 oz.) but I get a free refill every day (20 oz.) decaf between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. Moms are so special and I am truly blessed to be one, but most importantly one to our daughter...

Beautiful. Made me cry reading this---I am a full-time working-outside-the-home mom, yet this resonated so intensely for me!

I have never loved coffee as much as I do since becoming a mom to two toddlers. As far as I'm concerned, it's manna from God! As to the rest of the post, I think all of us moms feel the same way - that we can never do enough but want to do it all. We only hope that our best is good enough for a lifetime of childhood memories.

Having newborn twins and a toddler,I suddenly began drinking coffee. It is good to take support in all ways provided! Especially when 2 newborns and a toddler NEVER take a nap at the same time of day!

I understand the need for energy and mental alertness and I recently found a great nutritional choice that has helped me with greater energy and weight loss! I joined the 90 day challenge!..check it out at www.bizwizglobal.com this really works!

OMG, you're article touched me. I drink coffee every morning to get me going, to think straight, to wake me up, so that I can function as a good mother. I've tried doing without it and I do not get the jump start that I need. It feels so good to know that another mother out there is just like me and I do hope my children remember me for the better. Thank you for sharing your honest words.

I love my coffee! Here's a new healthy coffee, www.GraceInACup.com. This coffee is blended with an herb called Ganoderma. I've lost nearly twenty pounds, and have kept it off for 9 months, plus I have more energy. It's delicious!

I enjoyed the reading about "I'm a better Mom on Coffee" . I was just discussing with some of my friends who are all working mom about my Healthy Gourmet Coffee...

Well said, woman! I recently discovered the sweet secret of an afternoon cup of coffee (or two). All I can say is: WOW! Wish I'd figured that out with Baby No. 1 instead of two years into Baby No. 2's life :) I don't drink coffee after a certain point in the day so it doesn't interfere with my sleep ... but that extra jolt of caffeine makes the difference between me being a happy momma (and wife!) and a cranky one...
