Where Are You From ?

B. asks from Evans, GA

I'm from all over , lived in a couple of different states as a kid and several as an adult.
Those of you that have lived in more than one place ,When someone asks you where you are from where do you say you are from?
Is it the place you spent the most time? The place you liked the most? the place you spent your high school years? elementary? or Is it where you were born?

I usually say the place I spent the most time, which happens to be the place I like that best.

What can I do next?

I was born in TX but we moved around a lot when I was little; lived mostly in VA until I was 7 when we moved to Florida; I lived in FL until I was 31 and moved to OK. That was 2003. Usually I say "I'm from Florida but I've lived in Oklahoma for the last 7 years."

I am from NC since I was born and raised there. I have never lived in another state. But right now I am living in South Korea with my husband who is in the military so we plan on moving all around. :)

We are a military family. I say Chicago, my husband says Peoria, IL. The girls will say the last move was from NC, but I was born in IL. My eldest says Illinois, we were there for 9 years with him.

When I answer this, I usually say the place that is nearest and dearest to my heart, not necessarily the place where I was born and raised. When I ask new acquaintances or new friends this, if they have moved around a lot during their childhood, they usually answer that they are from "all over." I like these kind of meet and greets best because I love hearing about other people's experiences living all over the world. They're usually very interesting.

It depends who's asking. If it's someone from where I'm currently living, I say "All over, we moved a lot as a kid, and I kept it up as an adult" and go into details if they ask and I feel like talking about it. If it's someone from somewhere I'm travelling I tell them where I'm currently living.

Depends on where I am, if I were overseas sight-seeing, I'd say "I'm from Spring Branch, Texas."

But if I am at a dinner party here in Texas and someone says "So where are you from?" I would say "I was a military brat, so I am from here and there. Been in this area since middle school." Sometimes I even say the places I have been or where I was actualy born.

I grew up in four different states and eight different schools what I tell people when asked where I'm from this is .... where I was born and then say that I grew up in several different states, but I graduated high school from "here". If the person is interested in knowing more then they will ask, I just don't want to make this long drawn out question when ask where I grew up at. LOL

I spent 21+ years in CA...so that will always be my answer. But, I've lived here x many years.
My husband (also CA) is retired USN so we've lived in many states.
My Kids? Washington and Virginia. But, if I asked them?? They'd probably say Georgia.
Most people start asking when they can't figure out my "accent". I don't have one that I'm award of but can easily pick up the local one. I do confuse alot of people.
CA, military wife, here 6+ years. What about you?

Born and raised in NYC. But I get this question whenever I'm out of state or out of country, because I don't have the "steriotypical" New York accent, even though all my neighbors and most of my classmates did, some how I slid through, accentless. So no one believe's I'm a native! I find more people are curious when they can't pinpoint your origin/ethnaticity. But to answer your question people I know who are from all over, usually say their place of birth is where they are from, then give more detail on there other locations.

answers from Colorado Springs on

It depends on the context of the question. If I'm away from home and some one asks me where I'm from, I'm likely to say where I live now (Colorado). If people ask me where I am from originally, I say, "Minnesota, upstate New York, and Ohio," because that's what's true.

But I'm glad I wasn't a military kid; if I had been, that sort of answer could take an hour to get through.

answers from St. Louis on

does this question bother you? Sometimes it bothers me! We have lived in the same small town for 20 years now. Prior to that, my husband & I grew up in St Louis. We were considered such "oddballs"....when we moved here - that I still have the same chip on my shoulder!

Good grief, why does it matter "where" we came from??? Back then, I could not believe how insecure/insular my new neighbors were! & do you know....it still continues today! Then & now, the friendships/bonds with children are made .....I swear.....at birth. The current round in KG has the same families as friends .....as their parents did....& their grandparents!

With 20 years under our belts, you'd think things would have changed! But, oh, well, I now consider it their loss......& we have our own niche. & strangely, enough, my BFriend ...not only comes from St Louis, but we grew up in the same neighborhood. How's that for irony? !!

Ooops, sorry, I didn't answer your question! Hmmm, I don't have an answer! But thanks for listening!

B., i would be interested to hear you say "I moved alot in my life, but feel i have the most roots in Pumpkinville. It's lovely this time of year."

I dont feel people should feel offened when asked this question. Its just small talk, i doubt it would be a malicious question intended to make anyone feel insignificant. If i were to ask it I would just be trying to fill an akward silence or because i liked you and wanted to know more about you.

Such a funny question. I was born and raised in the same place, so when I answer, I usually say here. In my case, often what they mean is heritage. I am latin, with hint of a Mediterranean look. I guess they are trying to identify the look or accent, since "here" just doesn't seem to answer their question.
