What Can I Do to Get More Energy?

I need more energy! I know all moms could use some extra energy....but for the last couple weeks I've been really tired and I'm not sure why. First I thought it was because my period was looming somewhere in the distance. Then, it came and went. I'm still tired! My son has been waking up a little earlier than usual so that may be part of the reason. I've also started eating a lot better. I don't eat junk food or drink sodas. No, I have not been exercising...I have a hard time making myself get out in this cold dreary weather. Is it the weather that is making me tired? Anyway, what can I do to get more energy?

What can I do next?

I am anemic, and it's KILLING me. I am taking iron, and it's beginning to help, but not a lot yet. I agree with getting bloodwork done. Exercise helps too, but that is so hard to do when you're exhausted. Maybe we should form a support group for extremely tired moms. ;-)

Green smoothies!! You would be amazed at the energy. Google "green smoothies" and you will find some great recipes. My fav is baby green spinach and blackberries with some OJ.

And I do notice that working out really helps....so, if you can get to it at least 3 times a week, you may notice a difference.

The weather really gets me tired, but if I stick to my green smoothies, I am usually feeling pretty good!

Best wishes!

It might be the fact you aren't sleeping as much - healthier food should make you feel better. Make sure you are getting enough protein. If it keeps up, go to the Dr. Could be a thyroid or iron issue - both can make you tired. Then again - might just be motherhood : )

Try Mona Vie

A lot of moms on here do it. Call Tim Cronin at ###-###-####

Here's what I find decreases MY energy levels...

depression
change in weather
change in life experiences
lack of sleep

I recently had my blood work done and found out that, not only am I menapausal (early stages) but I have high blood pressure...YAY ME!

But everything else was perfect.

So starting with the menapausal stuff, I started taking soy as a way to boost my energy and started on meds for the blood pressure.

I have more energy now that I've started on the soy than I have in a LONG time. Also, I started leaving the dishes in the dishwasher or letting that floor go one more day without vacuuming in order to get back on a decent sleep schedule. IT HAS MADE A HUGE difference in how much energy I have during the day.

I didn't know how tired I was until i started sleeping again. I went from brain damage (literally forgetting things and not being able to hold a thought if I tried) to being able to think clearer and actually go up a flight of stairs without feeling like my heart was about to explode.

Now, my blood pressure is still HIGH...and I'm on meds for that...but I'd sincerely suggest blood work then some supplements to help things along.

If depression is the problem, by all means, it's not a sign of weakness to get on some AD to get you through the rough times.

I know how ya feel and wish you nothing but good ENERGIZING things!!

Hi C.,
I am a wellness educator and personal trainer. If you would like to know the supplements I recommend that are safe, let me know. Most of the ones in the store are made in China and are synthetic. One major study showed that taking synthetic multivitamin was worse for your health than taking none.
Supplements are not the place to cut costs.
I can definitely help you to have more energy.

Vitamin B-12 is supposed to help a lot. Also, I found out I'm highly wheat and dairy intolerant. Since cutting those foods out, I feel much better than I have in years. Many people have no idea they have a food intolerance. I was shocked as I have no digestive issues or very few. You could try getting checked.

There are a lot of different things that can cause your energy levels to go down - some physical and others more on the emotional side (even if you are a content, happy, upbeat person).

Thyroid is a common issue with energy levels. In general, exercise does tend to stimulate your energy levels as well as what kinds of foods you eat. Higher carb diets mean more energy (look at a box of Grape Nuts - what used to be considered health food is now called a high energy food because of the carb content).

There are many other physical conditions that can cause fatigue. If it's a real issue, it may be worth a blood draw and appointment at your doctor's office to rule out anything serious or to begin treatment if it is a medical condition.

Good luck.

If you've been to the doctor lately and had routine bloodwork it should show if you are anemic or not, but don't take iron unless you know it's needed...and if you are really tired don't rule out a thyroid problem. But I agree with everyone who says it could just be the lousy winter weather, we all start to get stir crazy about this time of year.

Just make sure, if it seems like it's an "all of a sudden" change for the worse, that it's not a medical problem.

Finally -- was your period a real full period? Some people spot early in pregnancy, is there a chance of that?

Vitamin D is huge. Also it wouldn't hurt to get your iron levels checks to make sure they are not too low

The weather effects me a lot! And this winter has been especially hard with all our real winter weather that puts a kink in getting outdoors. I do yoga for 20 or 30 minutes a day --- just some dvd's I've picked up at Wal-Mart and Target. I also found a walking dvd where you "walk" indoors and I really like it, too. My favorite multi-vitamin I've ever taken is Nature Made Liquid Softgel Multi For Her - I get them at Target or Wal-Mart. LOVE them! And maybe you just need some downtime...an afternoon at the movies maybe?

Exercising regularly can actually boost overall energy level. So if you haven't be exercising, that could have a bit to do with it. I've been terrible about getting to the gym since it's been rainy here, and I know I'm definitely starting to feel lethargic.

A vitamin D supplement (and/or a multi vitamin if you don't already take one) could really help. St John's Wart helps lift my mood which generally makes me feel like I have more energy as well.

Eating protein at breakfast. I know when I have just a bready breakfast, I'm sluggish compared to if I have fruit with a protein like cheese or peanut butter or even a smoothie with protein powder in it.

Hope this helps.

It definately could be the weather. Feeling stuck inside can slow anyone down. Exercising does help, even it is just a 20 minute walk. It helps me. Since its cold out you could go to a mall and walk the mall. About a month ago I started taking vitamins and I think they have also helped. I"m taking a multi vitamin, vitamin D, C and flaxseed oil. I think they are helping my nails too, they are finally getting stronger.

This weather has certainly drained me too.. I will be so glad to see Spring/Summer!!

That said...there are no "magic" potions or pills that are "good" for you.

Continue to eat healthy, I second the vitamin D (after testing, I learned that my body does not absorb Vitamin D or B-12) I take liquid supplements of those 2, sometimes -12 injections and I can really tell a difference.

I'm not a soda drinker either. I do walk a LOT and feel better when I do. When the weather is crappy, like it has been SO long in the Dallas area, I wear a pedometer to measure how much I walk inside when I am working around home and with my pets. It is fun to see how many steps I take.

Good luck....maybe Spring will hit us soon!!
