What Are Beyblades?

I have a 7 year old son in first grade, so I've been intrigued by the two questions posted about Christmas present ideas.

A couple of people mentioned Beyblades. What are these? Is it something that my 4 1/2 year old could enjoy as well?

What can I do next?

Beyblades are basically metal spinning tops. You put them in a plastic arena and "battle" them. The one that knocks over the other wins.

Veruca, I didn't know that could be done. Fascinating new world we live in... :)

G., I just wanted to share that your question brought up a memory... when my son asked me what Beyblades were, I said they were tops.

The boy standing next to us looked over and said "no- they're ***battle*** tops!" Apparently the 'battle' part is very important.

Just telling you so you don't make that same playground social faux pas that I did. ;)

COOL Veruca!

Kids already have them, hubby got them for them, and they love playing with them.

My 7 year old has tons of them. And an arena.
From when he was in about 1st grade and Kindergarten.
All the boys, had them and loved them and played w/it and with each other after school. And some girls like it too. My daughter for example has many too.

It is basically a spinning top.
A Japanese toy which was originally developed and manufactured by the Takara Tomy company.
There is also a cartoon series about it. Beyblades.
Many places sell it.
And online.
And there are many many types and names for each one.

And some kids, like to take the Beyblades apart and them assemble them back together into their own combinations. Because, the Beyblades are made of different components and different tips.

My boys love Beyblades, they played that daily almost all summer long with the other kids in the area. They are basically fancy tops, you put them in a stadium together and let them battle. There is also a cartoon about them, similar the old pokemon cartoons.

They are fancy tops with interchangeable parts. To get them to spin you have a rip cord. My son, 10, LOVES them. My daughter, 6, enjoys them too. My son's been collecting them for a couple of years now.

Yes, both your kids would enjoy them.

Veruca for the win!

G. your 7 year old would enjoy them, depending on your 4.5 yr olds dexterity he could use them or at least enjoy watching them.

haha like Jenna said, overpriced spinning tops. But super fun. My 11 year old finally stopped playing them as of last year but we have a lot of them including two arenas. We have all played with them and now my 4 year old boy loves them too, although he is still trying to master the launching of them. I think getting a plastic arena and maybe a starter package with a few beyblades would make a great gift for an almost 5 year old.

Apparently they are a new take on Battling Tops (circa 1968).
If you wait long enough, everything comes round again sooner or later.
It should be perfect for a 4 yr old.
