Went to OB Today, 5 1/2 Weeks Pregnant, but There Could Be a Complication?

Hope for the best, but expect the worst. I've had 2 miscarriages and also two successful pregnancies. It's not commonly known that 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. Good luck!

there is ALWAYS a chance that it is just a sac and no baby will be visable when you go back but if your doctor is not worried i wouldnt be she may have you go get a blood test to check your hormone levels though

Take a deep breath! It really is too eary to tell! If no baby at 7 or 8 weeks than be concerned

I had a "chemical pregnancy" in November '09. Sac, no baby. However, I'd had tons of pregnancy symptoms that shouldn't show up until later. (You may be early yet for nausea.) I was supposed to be a little farther along than you describe. At this point, you could be off with the dates and everything could be fine. It's one of those tough situations where all you can do is wait to see what happens.

I'm surprised your doctor saw you so early. Mine won't see anyone until you are at least 6 weeks or more. There really isn't a "defined" baby to see so soon. It's really a yoke sack, as my doctor has called it. I'm NOT saying it's not a baby so please do not misunderstand what I am saying. It's a baby at conception just so I make myself clear but as far as seeing the outline of a baby, you really won't see that. I believe you are overreacting. What did your doctor say? I'd base your condition on what your OB says and I doubt any woman here would admit to "feeling" pregnant at 5 1/2 weeks. The nausea and all the other stuff doesn't come on strong right away. It's a gradual thing. At least with my experience...and I'm pregnant with my 4th. I know a little about this pregnancy thing.

I would go back for a second ultrasound to confirm, but there is a common occurrence called a blighted ovum, which is what you have described. Women may or may not have pregnancy symptoms with a blighted ovum. An ultrasound should anything that might be in the uterus as early as 4 weeks- and with a normally developing embryo, a heartbeat can be seen by 6 weeks.

Hi there - I concur with everyone who is recommending that you get another ultrasound at the 8 week mark before you worry too much. "Blighted ovums", which are fertilized eggs that do not develop further for genetic reasons do happen, but you need more information before that diagnosis can be confirmed. An ultrasound at a later date, measuring your hCG levels at three different time intervals - do those before you jump to any conclusions.

OBs also don't have the best ultrasound equipment nor are they certified technicians that know how to read ultrasounds. I went to my OB with a positive pregnancy test, and based on my period, I thought I was 7 weeks along. That OB couldn't find a heartbeat and got all concerned but she told me to have another ultrasound a week later or more, and get my blood tests. She sent me to a real ultrasound technician with excellent equipment, and voila! We found my baby's heartbeat and she was measuring only 6 weeks. I ovulate later than most women, so using my period to determine gestational age is not accurate. My blood tests showed that I was also pregnant.

I now have a beautiful 5 week old baby girl; she arrived at 38 weeks!

GO to this website and it will show you every week from 4 weeks what your baby looks like on a ultra sound. And it shows that at 5 wks you will just see the sak and yolk sac so i wouldnt worry. And week 6 you can see a tiny baby. Dont stress to much its probably def. way to early. Check it out and it might ease your mind:) GOOD LUCK. let us all know what you find out in a few weeks.

It's too early to see anything. A sac is what you usually see at 5 1/2 weeks. You tend to see the heartbeat like at 8 weeks. And as far as symptoms go, it's also too early to feel them. Don't worry and enjoy your pregnancy! :)

If it was your dr. doing intra vaginal altrasound, there is a lot of room for human error. Don't sweat it until you get another ultrasound. They couldn't find my baby at all at 8 weeks in the Dr.s office. They sent me to radiology and the tech there found it no problem.

It is way too early to see if there's a baby in there. With this pregnancy I had early spotting, so I went for ultrasounds at 5 weeks, 6 weeks and 8 weeks. At five weeks the doctor thought she could see something, but it was too early. With my first pregnancy three years ago, at 5.5 weeks we could clearly see a sac, which looked like a tiny jelly bean, but couldn't see a baby yet (and two weeks later we could CLEARLY see two sacs with two babies...twins!). you're fine and so is the baby. Congrats!

You're not overreacting. I believe God gave us moms an extra "worry gene". (:

It's too early to detect a heartbeat. Even when doing IVF (when you know the conception date), they typically don't do the first US until 6 weeks.

I'm sure baby is nesting in his/her little sac as we speak.

My obgyn wont even see me until I am at least 6-8 weeks along just to prevent unneccesary worry. He just told me to start my prenatal and act like I was pregnant until the appointment even though i was one day late and the test came back positive. it is early so dont freak out.

Same thing happened to me with my first child. She showed up in the next ultrasound 2 weeks later. She's now almost 6 years old. You are so early on! Try not to worry, it doesn't help anything. Focus on the positive and just know, whatever happens it's now out of your control so there is no sense stressing. I wish you the best and hope you have a happy, healthy pregnancy! One more thing - pregnancy symptoms often times don't show up until 6-8 weeks pregnant - so there's still plenty of time for you to feel icky. And being tired is def a symptom! :)
