Weird Question About Diapers!

I know this is kind of a funny question... My 4.5 month-old daughter has regular bm every morning sometime between 3am and 7am. And every day we wake up to an overfull diaper! The size 2 diapers fit her just fine, and there are seldom problems during the day. She is sleeping so well at night I don't want to wake her just to change her diaper! But I am doing laundry every day to try to avoid stains on her pjs. Any suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the great advice! I am going to check into the bigger diapers today. Last night I did change her at about 4:30, and when we got up this morning everything was fine! No giant mess. And she slept about a half-hour longer too. Thanks!

Huggies makes an overnight diaper insize three that fits my son at that age. The thing is it is almost impossible tofind in stores. I go to www.drugstore.com and order them two at a time (shipping is free then). Before got these my son always woke up a mess now he wakes up clean and sleeps better. I love them. Huggies is the only brand I found that makes them and I only use them for overnight and I use regular diapers all day,

Hello K.,

I have been dealing with BM problems since my son was an infant!! But his problem is, that he doesn't have them!! I have been seeing his pediatitian about it, and she gave me a great idea that works (along with some medication for his constipation ) But she said to have him sit on the potty with a stool under his feet (so that his legs are perpendicular to the floor) and have him sit there for about 10 minutes 2 X a day, while reading to him. And that this straightens out his colon, and lets the "Poop" come down. And then give him a treat just for sitting there that whole ten minutes. Anyway, maybe if you started doing that before bed time. Or maybe once right after nap, and then again right before bed time. That way she'll get to of them in before bed, and hopefuly retrain her body to go before bedtime. I hope that information is helpful. Goodluck!

Massage works really well to help with BMs. You might try doing a "belly rub" in the early evening, to promote an earlier BM, then you wont have to clean her in the middle of the night. Adjusting her feeding times will also help... sounds like she is eating a ton in the evening, so maybe strat filling her up in the morning or afternoon, and (for lack of a better word) restricting her intake in the latter part of the day. This might promote a more convenient BM timing!

I went through this too with my first child, here is what I leared. 1) My babies never cared ifI changed them in the middel of the night in fact they slept longer when I did.

2) Probably the most important is that not all diapers are alike. You may need to find which fits your baby the best. My son leaked everywear in papmers and huggies fit perfect.... My daught was just the opposite. And after trying 3 or 4 brands my nieghbor discovered luvs worked teh best for her babies body. It sound funny I know but it's true, because they are all shaped diffently they fit each baby different too.

Hope it helps!!!

Hi K., I was a little confused about you letting her sleep all night in her diaper. was that for peepee and pooh? your daughter will most likely sleep through you changing her ,it is not good to let a baby sleep in either through out the night.the urin is like acid it sits on their skin thats why they get rashes as same for pooh. so you might want to consider changing in the middle of the night i have 6 girls and i changed each one every night sometimes twice in one night. and i swear by huggies they fit so nice they are not perfumed like pampers, store brands so i would give huggies a try. i used them with each one of my girls.i would also get a mattress pad to protect the bedding. they have them waterproof. i have one now on my 3 1/2 old bed and they are perfect.you can also buy the one that had the fitted ends . so i wish you good luck. you have alot of good advices

I had the same problem with my baby when she was about that age and I was so worried about waking her. I ended up just changing her before putting her to bed, it took a while to get the hang of it, but eventually I got so good at changing her and moving her. Suggestion for the stains though, SHOUT stain remover and the super-concentrated ALL liquid detergent works miracles for stains!

There has been some good advice already and I am a big fan of the huggies but there is one trick I used with my son that I havent seen up here yet. there is a small disposable liner that you can by it is usually used with cloth diapers and adds and extra absorbancy. It is usually found near the cloth diapers in the store. I found it added just that extra amount to keep my baby dry overnight.
Good luck

My son had the same problem I used all of the diffrent brands out there and the one that I found works the best is Targets brand. Since I switched I have only had a couple leaks. I would also move up a size at night or change her in the night my son never woke up when I would change him at night. Good Luck

I would move up a size. They say that if a child soils through then move up. They may seem to fit her fine but as they get older the pee and poop more at one time so sometimes the size they are in cant hold enough.

Try Huggies overnight diapers. They start at size 4, but they hold in just about everything. :)

Try Huggies Overnight diapers in a size 3. Make sure to slather her up with some diaper cream before bed, too.

I think it all depends on the type of diaper you are using. I know that with huggies my daughter would overfill them all the time. I used luvs and they worked way better than any others I've used before. I don't now what kind you are using but I hope that this helps a little bit. Also you may try to have her wear those pj's with the long body but no bottoms then maybe she will sleep thorough the change. Good luck.

Honey, save yourself the worry it takes two minutes to change the diaper, if there's no health issue you'll be done so fast the baby should stay asleep or go right back. Its ok we all have been there. Good luck with it! I work in a nursing home and I understand, however we have to turn and change most every two hours.

I use to swear by the huggie overnight diapers with my daughter. I always put a size bigger on her at night so it would absorb more. I don't know if I would wake her up just to change her diaper but maybe you could try it one time and see if see goes right back to sleep. Good luck

You been given some wonderful responses. The only thing I can add to them is to go to a thrift store and buy the cheapest pj's you can find. Let her wear those at night so you don't ruin the nice ones. I know that clothes are meant to be ruined and outgrown, but I was a mommy who saved baby clothes to put into a box or make a quilt out of. You might also consider putting one of those thick pad thingies (not sure what you call them) under her to sleep at night. The cloth ones. (They might be large, cloth diapers?) That way you don't have to wash all her sheets everyday; maybe just every other. Hope that helps!

I found that buying diapers one size larger, just for bedtime, was a big help with keeping the sheets dry in my son's crib. He didn't have a bm during the night, but his diapers would be so heavy in the mornings that they would leak if he didn't have a larger size on. We also tried the "overnights". They worked well, too. (I hope this helps.)

I would deffinatly change in her sleep make it quick and not too much light, how uncomfortable would that be sleeping in poop. can cause diaper rash and infections if around vaginal area. as for a lot of urine they make a night time diaper that is thicker and more absorbant. They also make these insert u put into diaper like very large pads... hope it helps a lil

I have 2 different types and sizes of diapers. One for during the day and one for at night. I let my little girl wear size 3 diapers by huggies the "hour glass shaped" diapers during the day and at night I have her wear size 3 of luvs. the luvs seem to cover more than the huggies. or maybe she needs a bigger size. When my daughter was 1 1/2 months old and she completely missed her diaper I knew it was time to get a bigger size.

if you do wake her she should go back to sleep, if not... my son would wet thru his pjs, until we took his cup away at nite. he goes to bed at 8:30 so we take it away at 8. also a fresh diaper before bed, even if its only a little wet. I don;t like to use huggies at all, I use white cloud (wal mart generic brand) on wy 2 yr old and my 2month old is in pampers.

We put the next size up diaper on our son. He wears a size 2 Huggies during the day and a size 3 at night. Sometimes he's in the same diaper from 8 pm until 8 am and we have no problems. His skin is in great shape and his clothes are very seldom wet or dirty. This works great for us.

I am not sure if anyone suggested you try Huggies overnights but they work great at night time!Otherwise I would say that for now you may just want to wake her up because that must be very uncomfortable for her. Good luck!!!

Someone told me not to go by the pounds on the box, but as soon as baby has 2 blowouts it's time to move up to the next size. We have had to get size 3 for my baby since he was 9 weeks old. They fit him fine and we have no accidents. He is now 13 weeks.
Maybe if you don't want to move up sizes yet try the overnites, but I am not sure how small they come.
