Two-year Old Broke off Big Chunk of Tooth

My precious two-year old daughter fell tonight and broke off the corner (a good fourth) of her top right front tooth. Aside from a tiny cut on her lip, it didn't seem to hurt (she stopped crying very quickly and said it felt better from then until bedtime, never acting like it hurt). We're definitely going to take her to see someone, but I don't have a pediatric dentist yet, and I wonder if this can wait until next week. These things always seem to happen Friday nights! Does anyone have a ped. dentist to recommend, and how miserable will the visit likely be? Finally, should I worry about nerve damage or infection occurring over the weekend? I'm not worried about how it looks, I just don't want it to later cause problems with her permanent tooth or to get infected. Should I relax about it this weekend, or try to call her pediatrician about this tonight? Poor baby, all this on her first day of preschool, too, which was pretty draining itself.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. I called my pediatrician the next morning (she didn't seem to be in any pain beyond about 2 minutes after the fall, and there was no bleeding, so I felt okay waiting until the next morning) and the nurse said to call our dentist this week, but they'd probably do nothing because it didn't sound like the injury went to the root/pulp whatever (since there was no pain). That meant there wasn't much risk of infection or nerve damage, so the permanent tooth would probably come in fine. That made me feel much better. She had no sensitivity to anything over the weekend (apple slices, etc.), so I'm not worried, but I'll still call a dentist, probably tomorrow. Thanks again for your concern and help!

My kids go to pedia dentist: HOMER SEDIGHI, DMD. /www.kidsdentistry.com off Olive Blvd/east of hwy 40 area.
His office is very kid friendly-the decor, the prizes, the toothpaste flavors etc! My kids like to go there.

per his emerg.list on website: if tooth is broke/chipped: rinse w/clean cool water. Apply direct pressure to the bleeding area w/a clean cloth. If swelling is present appply cold compress (i guess suck on ice or pop cycle?) and then call denist asap.

Good luck. Motrin might help w/the pain & possible infection.

Speaking from experience here it probably will be just fine. Watch her for the next few weeks to make sure that she doesn't get an abcess above the tooth. (It will look like a swollen pimple type thing most of the time.) If she fell really hard her tooth may turn dark but they frequently will lighten up again quickly. I had no idea that teeth could bruise like other body parts.

I have a 4 year old who loves to run into things with his teeth. We are in Illinois and have a really really great pediatric dentist. He's been great at seeing my little daredevil and reassuring me that even though his teeth may be chipped his permanant teeth will come in fine. When my son chipped off a big chunk off of one of his front teeth he offered to fill in the chunk but I think it's sort of cute and I just left it.

My kids go to Dr. Reed at Family Dentistry on Mexico Rd. in St. Peters. I think there are two other pediatric dentists in that practice.
