how old should a baby be before introducing 'tummy time'? My 12 day old is already lifting her head and I thought about putting her on her tummy (using a boppy). Is 12 days old too young yet?

What can I do next?

I think the sooner the better. There are too many flat heads running around today :) The longer people wait the more some kids hate it.

I started it at a couple weeks, but my 9lb man held his head up from birth. I swear he was born two months old. After talking to doctors about it, its so good for babies trying to get neck control. Try it, when she gets tired she will put her head down and get mad, thats when I flip him but the doctor even said let them struggle (of course make sure they can breath) but thats how they build muscle. I would try it and see how it goes. I started doing it about 6xs a day and by the time he was 2 months he could do it forever. Plus those are some cute pictures! =)

Our pediatrician said we could start at any time. We started her off pretty young, just about a week or two old. We did tummy time with her laying on her tummy on our chests as we laid down, and let her spend some time on her tummy on a blanket on the floor. She didn't care for it much in the beginning, but after some practice and making it part of her routine she did great.

G., first of congrats to you on your new little one, second of all IMO as long as you are there I would do it, babies need exercise, and different stimuli as well. Don't forget just like us they like to learn, need to really, and they get bored like we do so a different position is helpful in a couple ways. Mine even used to nap that way, under my close supervision and truly it was some of the best naps they took.

Congratulations on your new baby! ((And I'm w/ you on the first-time Mommy jitters... I think everyone here has 'been there - done that'))

Go for it! Stay with her and don't worry about the Boppy. Get down on the floor so she can see your face. You can also put her on your tummy/chest so when she looks up - there you are!

We started our little man w/ tummy time early and just a few minutes at a time. As soon as he started to fuss, we moved him. He started rolling over and sits so well at 6 months... don't know if it's early TTime or not, but we'll take it!

Congrats again and good luck!

G., do what you think is best for the baby, she is your baby. As long as the cord is not going to be harmed if it is still hanging on, then go for it. What ever you do make sure you get in the habit of getting in put, but making the decisions yourself. Remember when it comes to your baby you are the expert.

G., They are never too young for a little supervised tummy time. I would not use the boppy, just put a blanket on the floor and lay her down. You could also put her on your bed and be on the floor so that she could see her mommy's face. Tummy time has a lot of benefits, one is that it helps to avoid the flattening of the back of the baby's head. When the little ones spend too much time on their backs, in bouncy seats, in swings, the back of their heads can flatten out. Tummy time a couple times a day is a great way to help avoid this.

The sooner the better. If you don't get her on her tummy soon enough she may not want to get on it at all. That is how they get there all over strength. 12 days is not too early. The important thing is that you stay with her and not let her fall to sleep on her stomach. Start with just 3-5 minutes a couple times a day and work up.

Good Morning G., Congratulations on your precious little Angel.

12 days isn't to young, only do it for a few minutes and see how she does. She may do very well or cry a little. You be the judge on how she does.

Again Congrats. What a Christmas blessing.

I introduced supervised tummy time with all three of my kids after the umbilical cord fell off... about 10 days old. It helps them get muscle in their necks to hold there head up.

Congratulations! It's not too early. Just make sure you are right there with her so you can see her. It's great for her muscles, the sooner she gets used to it the better, and it's also good for other motor development. If she gets fussy, try to entertain her for a bit longer, then turn her over. You can also set her near the edge of the bed on her tummy and you can get on the floor beneath her so she can focus on your face while you make funny faces. Of course, make sure you stay right there for supervision.

Best wishes!

The sooner, the better, but don't use the boppy. Just put a blanket on the floor and put her on it. Or you can lie on your back and put her on your chest. Don't wait until 4 mos. She won't like it at that point and you will have wasted many opportunities for her to develop muscle strength. Just make sure you don't leave her unattended and she will be fine.
