Toddler Dental Work

My little girl will be 3 in July and is scheduled to have some surface cavities filled the beginning of June. Her dentist wrote a script for 2, 2mg Valium to give her 1 1/2 hours before to keep her mellow so she can stay still for the procedure. They explained that it's not like an adult filling b/c it's just on the surface so there's no drilling she just has to stay still longer than she has to for a cleaning which is why they prescribe the Valium. I asked all those questions because I don't like her to have anything like medication that can be avoided for example I selectively vaccinate. Has anyone else had this experience with toddler dental work? A friend of mine uses the same dentist and they did the same thing for her little girl around the same age for a similar procedure but she spoke to someone who uses another pediatric dentist in the area and they just use gas. I just want to make the best decision for her because I understand she needs it done but don't want to unnecessarily medicate her with something this strong. They wrote the script based on her weight so I'm not worried about overdosing, just giving it to her at all seems a bit much to me.

What can I do next?

My son has a great pediatric dentist and has had to have a couple of fillings over the last few years. He has never had valium OR gas. They just DONT do it because they say the risks outweigh the benefits.

His dentist uses a local generally, but for a surface filling, my son goes without because he HATES the shot. They take a good long time to go over the procedure with him, let him sit for a few minutes next to a child who is having work done and doing great so he can watch what the dentist and techs are doing, then he hops up on his bed.

I was a little surprised by the no gas thing, but it seems to work fine, and he's totally himself after.

I too thought it was extreme and I put it off for a while. My daughter was 3 and had to have her whole mouth done and they did conscious sedation. Gave her a drink followed by a actual iv. I was a wreck! It turned out wonderful and she has no fears about the dentist. So 2 pills to keep your daughter from not being traumitized, well worth it!

find a pediatric dentist who uses gas....why medicate if you don't have to!

Sometimes, doctors just find a method which works for them & then they use it across the board. It's up to you to be your own advocate.

My son had a filling at 3 and they drilled and filled it. He freaks just getting a cleaning (sensory issues) he had gas and did fine. I would probably look for a dentist that uses gas instead
