Teething for One Wek

Has anyone ever experienced a baby having constant teething pain for over a week. It appears my almost 1 year old daughter may have several teeth coming in-they are not on the surface so it is hard to know for sure. She does not have a fever, runny nose, or anything else going on. She is extremely fussy waking almost hourly at night and crying on and off all day and night. We have an older daughter and though she experienced intense teething this is definitely more severe. Any suggestions or thoughts on whether this could be something besides teething?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great responses. It is is so wonderful to have your momma gut instinct confirmed by other Mommas. I think we are through the worst of it for this bout. I am doing a combo of things. Gummomile is a naural clove chamomile rub that helps. Also rubbing tumeric on her gums-a natural anti inflammatory seems to help allot. Tonight I am trying a combo from a friend of hylands teething tablets and gripe water-we'll see. I tried tylenol last week and though it helped some the rebound pain when it wore off seemed to be brutal. Thanks much-such a great place. It really helped to hear all your stories and confirm that yes teething pain can be this rough!

My 14 month old seems to be getting his eye teeth and molars at the same time, then last week, a bottom tooth popped up. Needless to say, this is ongoing with him, and very intense. When he seems to be suffering quite a bit, we give motrin before bed. Teething tablets didn't work for my son, but I hope that they might work for you.
I would try some motrin or tylenol at night. If it is teething pain, this should give some relief and allow a good night's sleep. If it doesn't work, it may be something else, and you may want to take her to the doctor.

It sounds like the drawn out teething my 3 younger children experience(d). I use Hyland's teething tablets, cold rags & my fingers to help alleviate the pain. Good luck!

Make it a GREAT day!

I never tried the herbal tablets, but I heard they work well. My guy had similar issues, and we used topical Orajel for infants, and when that didn't work, we used Tylenol. I know lots of folks say not to use pharmaceuticals, but it helped our little one get enough sleep!

My one year old has been having teething pain for the last month and a half. I know it's teeth because she points to them and rubs at them and chews on everything she can get a hold of (more than just puts in her mouth -- really gnaws at them). Those things tell me it's teeth causing the pain, so I give her a little orajel to help it or a frozen duckie/washcloth and when it's really bad some ibuprofen.
It could be growing pains, but that usually affects them more at night. You don't mention if you have seen her doctor about this or if she gets better if you give her some pain medication. There are lots of things that it is possible to be -- a greenstick fracture of a bone, a dislocated or pulled joint, a urinary track infection. If she doesn't improve take her to the doctor. They have seen it all, many times, and have ways of getting to the bottom of it.
I hope your daughter feels better!

My oldest did that for 3 months. When the teeth start moving up in the gums, they start to hurt, even though you may not see anything yet. At first I thought he was getting sick, when he would wake up in the middle of the night and just want me to hold him. After a while, I got so tired of it that I figured he'd just learned bad sleeping habits, and let him cry it out, etc. It was all very horrible for all of us. I really didn't think it could be teething, since his first four had come in relatively pain-free.
After three months of sleepless nights, about 6 teeth all came in at once and he was suddenly back to his usual self. He was happier and slept through the night all on his own. I felt so bad, now that I knew he'd been in pain all that time! I would have given him Tylenol or some sort of other teething relief. We only used Tylenol and Baby Orajel, but I've heard that Hyland Teething Tablets are wonderful.
I hope your daughter's teething doesn't last 3 months like ours did!

Mine is 15 months and he has gone through several bouts like that. Sometimes the teeth don't actually break through and two weeks later we go through it again. I find the Hylands teething tablets really help when nothing else will

Hylands didn't work for us, but they have teething drops called camilia (sp?) and those worked great. My son is getting 4 teeth right now and he has a really hard time with it. They also have a tablet form made by boiron in a little blue bottle that looks like a chapstick tube. It's called Chamomilla (I believe)and is much cheaper than the drops however it doesn't disolve like the hyland's does. Good Luck! I know what it's like.
