Switch Doctors or Find a Birthing Center? (S. Miami)

Hi Ladies,

I am currently 7 months pregnant. I like my doctor a lot, but she offered me a scheduled C-section during the very first visit. I have met so many women lately who ended up having C-sections for some reason or another. I have told my doctor that I want to try for a vaginal birth first and she was alright with that, but it just seems doctors find any reason to change plans and do the C-section. (the baby is too big....the baby's heartrate is dropping......etc....)

I live in S. Miami and am considering finding a birthing center or doula. Does anyone have any recommendations? I with that I could find the best of both worlds... (A doctor that encourages natural labor progression and does not start one intervention after another.........Although an epidural sounds pretty good.........)

What can I do next?

You should let the doctor know what you want and stick to it. The only reason you should have a c-section is if it is truly medically necessary. I had my first two vaginally, and one was 9 pounds. I felt great in comparison to my other two which were c-sections. The first was required because she was breech. The second was because my doctor wouldn't do a vaginal after a c-section. I wish I'd gone to another doctor. He was only 7 pounds, it would have been so much easier. For me, it was awful, painful and recovery time was long. Unless they can give you a sound medical reason for a c-section, stick with what you want, even if it does mean going to another doctor.

Hi M.,

My girlfriend just went through this (we actually had the same OB, but her birthing history is different than mine) - she decided in the 8th month to switch OB's because she didn't want to go through a C-section again. Her new OB evaluated her and she had a perfect vaginal birth! I just emailed her for the info for her current OB so I can pass the info along - I believe she is in S. Miami too.

Good Luck!

My OB/GYN was awesome. With both of my deliveries no matter how much I begged for a c-section they still made me deliver natural. His name is Dr. DeLeon in Mercy Hospital. They are stron believers in natural birth. I do recommend the epidural!!! Trust me

Hi M.,

I had similar fears when pregnant with my daughter and ended up using a combination approach of an OB who I found to be more naturally minded and less intervention oriented than the norm, plus a doula who would accompany me at the hospital. The doula I used is Lisi Grullon
###-###-#### and she is wonderful, and my OB was Dr. Ronald Sancetta.

I delivered at Jackson South which has nice private birthing rooms with jacuzzi baths, dim lighting and nice decor. Not that any of that ended up mattering since I was 8 cm by the time I got to the hospital so things moved pretty quickly!

Here is an eye opening article I found on the frightening rise in c-sections in this country

If you have no medical reasons for a c section, have a frank talk with your doc. Though she offered it doesn't mean she'll force it on you last minute... All this c section craze is CRAZY, but I strongly recommend the epidural, why go through pain when technology provides relief for it. My daughter was just fine after it.

Good luck, and also Dr Appolon is great!

Hey M.
I am also in the South Miami area. I noticed that many doctors here in South Fl push C sections. Crazy.. So I went through many to find one that was willing to go through natural birth. I was active with Prenatal Yoga and the person doing the yoga was Debra. She was awesome and a doula. http://www.prenatalplusyoga.com/

Someone also suggested Dr Apollon. Her group is AWESOME. I switched to her group late in my pregnacy and I had complications and had to give birth early.. Unfortunately I gave birth on thanksgiving and the group was not available but Dr Fink covering for her group was available and he was AWESOME. He pretty much told me he would leave me alone if I wanted to have a natural birth and work with us and fortunately everything went smoothly. So I would defnitly check with Dr. Apollon and her group or Dr Fink.

Good luck!
K.
