Help! We have a half wall dividing our living room and dining room and the top of it is oak. I`ve tried everything to try to make it not feel sticky! Any suggestions?

Thanks! It`s actually been 8 years since we`ve done it. I clean it a couple times a day in the 2-3 ft area it`s sticky(I have a daycare here and lots of peoples hands!) I will try the murphys oil soap-may have to re finish?

What can I do next?

My guess is that someone mixed an oil based stain and a water based stain. Means the whole thing needs to be sanded down and refinished.

Is it stained or and sealed? If they used a water base sealer over an oil base stain that could be why, or the other way around. It may need to be stripped and re sealed. I having to completely strip my kitchen becuase of latex over oil paint without the proper primer between them. It just gums up on me and never fully cured.

I would really try to scrub it with some serious wood cleaner. My moms kitchen cabinets were gooey from years of natural gas use and them smoking. It was so disgusting. We took the doors off and used some kind of cleaner outside and then when they were done they were a totally different color.

The other option is just popping it off and putting another piece of wood on it. A carpenter might be able to tell you how to clean it too.

Have you tried steel wool yet? Try that with some Murphys oil soap. It sounds like it isn't clean.
