Some Kind of Identification for a Three Years Old Starting Public School.

My three years old will be starting school August 2008. He will be on the head start program, 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Also, the school bus will be picking him up, and droping him off. My 3 years old has speech delayed, he uses less words than kids his age. My question is, where do I go to get his finger print, and some kind of identification for safety reason?

What can I do next?

I agree with Joan R- We had the Constable's office out at our local Chick-Fil-A and they had the kits to get all the info, including a lock of hair for DNA. When I asked them about where someone else could get info, they said a lot of times schools will have them come out, etc. But you can also just call them to get what you need.

When we went to the courthouse to take care of transferring a car title, they had the kits there.

I don't know where you live, but Saturday, August 2, Community National Bank in Bellaire (5123 Bellaire Blvd. at S. Rice, ###-###-####) is doing free child ID kits from 9 AM until noon. There will be photos and fingerprinting of kids from 2 and 1/2 to early teens with free lemonade and donuts.

I am taking it as your child will be out and about and therefore you want to do this for safety reasons....not as ID for the school.

Give the constable's office a call. I believe they have identification kits available to fingerprint your child, as well as a packet that holds a recent picture. They used to do this when my youngest was small.

If this is not for safety reasons....they have some really nice lanyards at the local stores (probably even a cartoon character he likes), that would hold all the pertinent information you could put on a card with picture.

When my son went to Kindergarten and insisted on riding the bus, I was concerned. I went to Walmart and had a dog tag made with my son's name, address and our cell phone numbers on it. He wore it around it around his neck with a chain that would break if he had it caught on something (I was concerned about him being hung by it). I had a second one made and put it on his backpack. I figured that he would always have it with him on the bus.

Also, if you are concerned about keeping tack of him, there is a phone I saw at Verizon Wireless that has a GPS chip in it and the parents phone can be used to see where your child is at all times. I don't know what the service costs, but it is good for piece of mind.

Good Luck!

Having a formal record with the fingerprint will be great, but for immediate recognition your request reminded me of something I had seen in the past. A friend sent me an e-mail of a place that sold name tattoos. They can make personalized tattoos for your little ones. I am not sure of the web site because it was a while ago, but if you google kids identification or personalization tattoos you may find it. If you can't let me know and I may be able to ask my friend again.
