Does anyone know where I can get some sort of ID card made for my three year old? Yesterday we were at a very loud McDonald's and I could not find him or hear him. It was very nerve racking for me, but also he does not talk. So, he could not ask for help. When we did find him it turned out he had been crying! So, he was in fact frightened and feeling lost.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi L.,

When I moved to FL, my husband and I attended a festival downtown Deland. It was there that the police department was taking photos, fingerprinting and making id's for any and all children. I have a wonderful id for both my boys and everything was free. The police department may be a good place to start.

Hi, L.!!!

Usually your local Sheriff's Dept. will advertise about a time they will be doing 'kits' for kidz with photo, fingerprints & pertinent ID in a specific place. Call the Dept. in your area & check with them.\

Until we got three of our 11 Grans in 2000 to care for we were big VFW people & we worked with our local Dept. doing these in CA & NV, they are/were free and, I think so very necessary.

If there isn't one planned maybe you & some local Moms could work with the Dept. to set one up!

Good Luck!

Take him to the sheriff dept. Thsy will finger prit and photo him. I'd also get some of his blood(skinned knee) and put it in a baggy for DNA. Be careful what you use for Id names on book bags help child snatchers. The cops would rather help prevent than to hunt down later. Fire dpartments also stopped having parents put child in room stickers on children's

How about an ID bracelet that he can not remove. O. with his name, your phone numbers. Sort of like what the folks with Diabetes or other heath issues wear.

I have an ID for my son from Missing Children Center, Inc. www.missingchildrencenter.org - it has his picture, finger prints and statistics (d.o.b., age, sex, etc). It's also laminated and he calls it his 'drivers license'.

Good luck.

You can go to your local Motor vehicle department with a birth certificate and get your child an ID that looks just like a Drivers License. It is Vertical not Horizontal. We did this for each of our children when traveling. It is great to have in the MVD data base God forbid anything anything ever happnes to them. Immediate access to their photo, and other important information. It was only a few dollars and the kids thought it was cool . We live in Florida and I am sure it is available elsewhere. Good Luck !

I just got my son's their cards through
www.nationalemergencyid.com

Only the kids first initial and last name is printed on the front (with picture and height/weight and eye/hair color). The back has emergency contact numbers, medical conditions/allergies and release for medical treatment. You update it every 6 months (for kids under the age of 10) and then annually for kids over 10. It was a one time fee of $40 and I can get cards for both my sons from now on and only pay s/h. I thought it was a great deal. They also have DNA and fingerprint kits too.

I would just print it myself. You can get special card paper at office depot or staples. They will also laminate for you. Or you can just print it on stock paper, even using a pick of him if you want, then have it laminated. I would be careful though, I am not sure i would want some stranger having my name and other info right there on a card that they could use to convince my son they know me or know him.

With our son when we go somewhere he is going to run free at, like a McD's or indoor play area I always make sure he knows exactly where we will be sitting. One of us walks around with him then has him lead us back to where we are. Then if he needs me he can find me.

L.,
The state of Florida offers an ID card starting at age 5 unless there is a physical handicap. It is a 'true' state ID (like a drivers license) all that is required is their Birth Certificate and Social Security Card. (Copies are NOT acceptible)

Until then I know in my area (Fort White) we have a State Farm that will make ones for you that have the name and address.. maybe contact the local police department on ideas until you can get the State Id.

I hope this helps :-)

I am sure the police office would do it for you, or if not, they'd know who could. I got one for my son when he was about 18 months old. Watch for places where they check car seats & that kind of stuff on the weekends, and they sometimes offer the cards as well...thats how I got mine. I think there was one coming up. I'll see if I can find it, & will email you if I do...call the police though, surely they can help! I am sure that was terrifing for the both of you. xo

Hello L.,
If you have a computer get some business size cards and print any information you want on to them. Of course make several and then laminate them and attach to your child in any manner you desire.
Older children love dog tags that you can put information on.Also years age there was a wrist band that was put around the wrist with a leach(similar to a dog lease) tha kept your child close to you and it worked beautifully until they were able to stay close to. Hope some of this helps.

My idea is a do it yourself thing... You can get card stock from the store (heavy cardboard type paper) and print one yourself if you have a computer. Make it up yourself... This way you can put the information that you want on it. You can even inclue a pic of you and Dad if you want. That way people know who to return him to.

You can buy contact paper or laminating sheets from Wal-mart so that it lasts a little longer. If he doesn't resist, you can punch a hole through it and have him wear it around his neck. If he doesn't like that, maybe make a small ID badgle and try pinning it to his shirt (front or back depending on what he will let you do).

I wish you all the best. My daughter is 3. Fortunately for us she talks to EVERYONE. I know I would be devastated if I ever lost her!

One person recommended pinning an ID to your child-- I have a warning for you. While placing contact info on him may be a good idea (like "if I'm crying, please help me find my mommy by calling her at ____" with your cell phone number)... but NEVER put your child's name directly on him where strangers can see. Drives me CRAZY when I see kids on a field trip who have a name tag on-- the school should only have the SCHOOL's name, not the CHILD's name!! A stranger can walk up to a child and say, "Hi, Billy! I know your mommy and she said I should take you to her. Come with me." The child thinks the stranger knows him because the stranger knows his name.

My son's school does it through www.thechildidprogram.com. Call them @877-777-2339 for a program locator. It's the size of a credit card with his photo, name, gender, birthdate, hair/eyes color, date of birth, weight, and phone number. It also has an area for additional info (like allergies, etc.) This is the second year he has participated in it. In the reverse side, it gives instructions on "If your child is missing-act immediately!" Last year I bought a package for $15.-17.00 for two ids and one magnet type to put on the wall, along with a bag tag (but I did not want to put it on their for the same concerns other moms posted.) The had a smaller package and other options as well. Hope that helped. :o)

Most police departments offer ID services that are free of charge. You can simply go to a police department ( or arrange an appointment) to have your child finger printed, photographed, etc. so that, if needed, your child can be identified. As far as an ID card, if it on the child, per se, then you could unknowingly be giving information that may make your child more vulnerable. Your safest bet is to talk to the police department about how to proceed.

OUr Sheriff's Office attended our fair with a set up to provide children with ID. They do a fingerprint, picture and demographic info. I believe they also gave us a DNA collection kit to take home, but we already had that from their births. I would call your local Sheriff's office and see what they offer.

Hi! L.,
I am a mother of two grown sons. We are retired military so my husband and I have always had ID cards. Well, children of military members can not receive ID cards until they turn ten years of ages. Unless their parents aren't together or other special reason. I am telling you this because my son wanted ID's,because we travel so much oversea,I needed ID for the same reason for my sons. So, I made them ID's with all the information I had on my ID using my sons name at the top of the card. L., you can purchase the covering for a ID card from Wal-Mart. After making his ID you can pin the ID to your son like a name tag or maybe in his pocket. I do hope this will help you. God's blessing be with you and your family. Oh! you can get ID from the Library and the police Dept in you area.

You could also make one for yourself on the computer. Then laminate it and when you go out you can pin it to the inside of his shirt or let him put it in his pocket.

HI L.
You can make up your own ID Card by taking whatever color paper you want to use, either put it in the computer printer and print the info like just his name and your names so they can holler out if someone finds him. Then at walmart or wherever, they have the peal and stick plactic coating that you can make it almost like how your license is in your wallet. Then punch a hole in it and attach it to his shirt. I would say use a ribbon to tie it around his neck, but I'd be afraid he could hurt himself. He may take it off also. Good luck. PS. Never let them out of your sight.
