My baby is almost 6 months and has a terrible diaper rash and the doctor said the only way for it to go away is for her to start eating solid food as I have tried everything to cure the rash. My problem is she hates to eat. Any sugggestions will be greatly appriciated. thanks

What can I do next?

I've never heard of that "solution" for diaper rash.

If a baby won't eat, they won't eat. She is simply probably not ready.

At this age, "eating" is an INTRODUCTION to foods, not eating feasts 3 times daily, like adults.

A serving size for a baby this age is in terms of teaspoons or tablespoons...NOT "jars."

I can't believe your Pediatrician suggested you feeding her solids and then not giving you further information on it or WHY he/she suggested this for curing diaper rash.

Some parents put a little rice cereal in a baby bottle, then make the opening a little larger in the nipple so that the cereal mixed milk/formula can be sucked through the nipple.

BUT, you REALLY need to ask your Pediatrician. He/she should be telling you what foods to start with, how to go about it, and what to do.

SOME babies at this age, still have a "gag reflex" and their tongue will still push out the food... they will not yet "swallow." You cannot make this reflex go away, until THEY are ready for solids and can swallow.

ALSO very important, is to remember that for the first year of life, a baby's PRIMARY source of nutrition is from breastmilk/formula...NOT solids.

Also, if you are breastfeeding, it could very well be something you are eating and thus may be in the breastmilk, and the diaper rash could be in relation to this.

If her diaper rash is not going away... has your Doctor examined your baby? Sometimes it is a yeast infection and standard diaper creams will not work on this.

Some babies get a diaper rash when they are teething too.

ALSO, if your baby is not eating....it could be perhaps due to teething, or "Thrush" in her mouth.

In any event, I would think your Doctor would look into these other POSSIBLE causes and factors.

All the best,
Susan

Susan hit the nail on the head with ALL her points...

My questions are what kind of feeding schedule are you on? At just through the middle of five months we started with one 'meal' that consisted of a few teaspoons of cereal after morning bottle. Then, introduced one type of fruit/veggie every few days to allow for detection of allergic reaction and/or tummy adjustments.

It took me about two whole months to get him on three feedings a day of cereal/jar combo feeding and it was very small amounts. He didn't eat a full jar of 1st stage food until three months into it.

I would take a look at some sample feeding routines/requirements on www.babycenter.com and then maybe start over for feeding.

But, as for diaper rash...get your doctor on the phone and ask him what the heck he was thinking? I mean, that is bizarre advice. Let your little one soak in a tub of oatmeal bath and keep her butt dry!! Let hang out naked if you can and I used Corn Starch Powder by J&J to put on my son's butt in between naps and diaper changes. The pastes/creams did nothing for his diaper rash and for one we ended up with a prescription cream because it too awful.

Hope that helps a smidge.

Good Luck.

what?!?!?! thats soo bogus what kind of dr is that???... if your baby has had this rash for more then 4 days it could be a yeast infection (try a yeast infection cream a thin layer 2-3 times a day my daughters dr gave me nystatin). you dont have to push your baby to eat solids (plus this could an allergy to a solid shes eating). try something blan like rie cereal or any other cereal for babies. also if your baby is like my daughter she may be allergic to the chemicals in the diapers... have you switched diaper brands lately? my lil one is allergic to all diapers except the all natural chemical free ones (i found them at target). how i got my little one to eat solids was i fed her about 15 mins before she normally eats so shes not fussy while you try to spoon feed her. anyways i hope this helps good luck and get a second opinion on that diaper rash.
