Diaper Rash and Table Food

My 10 month old has been eating table food and breast milk now for over a month and has had a persistent diaper rash ever since changing from baby food. Could there be a correlation between these two things? As long as I keep original Desitin on her she does fine. But if she misses the Desitin only once and she has a messy diaper, the rash comes back with vengeance - raw, red, and bleeding. Has anyone else dealt with this and what did you do? Help! She is screaming so often with messy diapers and during her diaper changes and I'm sick of Desitin!!!

did you try different foods, as she might be having a reaction from particular foods. Keep a list of the foods you are feeding her, and see if some work better than others. Keep applying cream until you know otherwise.

Okay, this may seem "out there", but maybe because of the change in diet, her skin is just sensitive. With mine, my oldest was fine in cloth diapers. If I put him in a disposable diaper, he would rash to the point of bleeding, and he wasn't left in it, it just reacted to his skin in a bad way...maybe throw a different kind of diaper on her. It seems simple, but it really made a difference with mine.

It's quite possible the baby has an allergy to something new she's been introduced to. The only way to find out is to stop all table food and introduce one at a time. Give each new food item at least a week for adverse reaction before adding a new one.Seriously consider (salt). Small babies can't digest like we can. So it's going to come out in some way. As far as the desitin thing goes, Have you ever tried cornstarch? It protects a babies bottom as well as any products on the market. And is not at all hard to use. Just put some in an empty spice jar. Use like powder when changing.

My little boy, 16 mos., has very sensitive skin and the same thing happens to him. We avoid citrus and other highly acidic foods, and put him in cloth diapers most of the time (we use disposables when we are "out and about" and at bedtime). I wash them myself - not a big deal, just hot water, soap and bleach and a double rinse cycle. I use Desitin, too and change him very often. Paper diapers encourage one to change less frequently and I'm convinced there must be a chemical reaction of some sort - if he uses them occasionally he's fine, but everyday and his little behind bleeds!

My daughter had the same problem. The pediatrician said it was from stomach acid and adjusting to the dietary changes. She also suggested a food allergy. Our doctor gave an Rx for an antacid once daily and she was fine. We also modified her diet to decrease acid producing foods. I would consult your pediatrician. Good luck!

Yes! My 8-mo-old is dealing with this. I stopped solids until we could clear it up. My doctor suggested Lotromin to help clear it up, but I personally think just putting the Desitin on and letting her bottom air dry did the job. We started solids again, and so far have been able to prevent it from coming back. Sorry I don't have a better solution, just wanted you to know you aren't the only one dealing with this frustrating issue!

What kind of diaper rash? If it's a red ring around her anus, it could be a food allergy. Dr. Sears has info on that. I'd pull off some of the foods she eats more often and do a challenge test. Also acidic things can do that. My son got the worst rash after grandma fed him tangerines. He gobbled them up, but screamed when he had the next BM because it hurt him so bad and made instant awful rash. Good luck!

I saw that someone else recommended "poop goop" as an option. I swear by that stuff, my daughter is 2 1/2 and has very sensitive skin. My pharmacist told me the make up of poop goop is equal parts of hydrocortizone, lotrimin, and desitin.

I hope it works for you.

You may want to consider that she has food allergies and try watching carefully what and when you feed her. My son was allergic to corn when he first went on table foods; it used to burn his butt every time we gave it to him in the regular form. He didn't have any reactions eating things with corn products, only the corn itself. Try grouping types of foods together and eliminating one group at a time for a specific length of time to see if it helps. If it does not, try a different group of foods. Ex.: corn products, wheat products, milk/dairy products, etc.

My oldest had this reaction whenever she ate anything with tomatoes or drank oj (both acidic). If you remove anything acidic from her diet & this continues, consider yeast &/or food allergies (they can be connected). In the meantime, I found bag balm (can buy it at a feed store in a green square cannister) worked the best (unless the rash is from yeast)with all 4 of my kids. It's antibacterial like Neosporin, goes on & wipes off easily, but protects the skin really well.
My daughter was also helped when I switched to using cloth diapers (at home; still used disposable at night & when went out), as they let her skin breath better (& there is chemicals in the disposable diapers which could contribute to her problem if she is allergic to something), & with cloth one is forced to change the diaper more often which is better for the skin.

It sounds like it may be a yeast infection. It is VERY easy to get rid of them.

Go to Walgreens and buy GENTIAN VIOLET. It's a purple liquid that you put on your daughter's rash. It stains everything it touches, though, so be careful.

My son had his only rash when he was about that age and I was so confused when it wouldn't go away. I did the gentian violet and it cleared up completely in 24 hours.

My 3 yr old had this persistent diaper rash too for like a YEAR! My sister finally told me that one of her daughters had something similar and she found that Neosporin took care of it. I thought hers would have gone away as soon as she stopped wearing diapers, but nope! I also found that A&D Ointment worked wonders on both of my children. For my daughter, I applied Neosporin and a little A&D every night - even after the rash disappeared and it's finally stayed away. With my son, I'd let his little bottom get nice and dry before ever putting a diaper back on him - my niece used to use a blow dryer LOL :-) Having a dry bottom was key for him. Hope something helps! I'd ask my doctor too.

I was also going to say it sounds like it could be rash. My boys have gotten them in the past. You could try just an over the counter anti itch cream (I use the generic brand at Target, by the athlete's foot cream) and see if that helps clear it up. Put on the anti itch cream in a thin layer and then the Desitin over the top since the anti itch cream isn't a good moisture barrier. Is she teething? My boys also get rashes when they're teething.

It could be related to something she ate. The best treatment and most effective treatment for diaper rash is Grade A Organic Pure Lavender mix with oil (olive will work), you should see improvement within the first 24 hrs. Or an organic diaper cream can work with more patients. My Ped. says creams like Desitin can actually make diaper rash worse, if just one microscopic piece of mess is left behind the cream does such a great job sealing things out it also seals things in to spread and worsen. Be sure you have Fragrance free wipes, wash cloths with mild soap and water work best (if you don't mind the laundry). Good Luck!

What new foods have you introduced lately? It sounds like a fungal problem or a food sensitivity.

Common allergens can be wheat, soy, dairy, nuts, corn, citrus, or nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, etc.)

I would make a food journal and stick to a low allergen diet for awhile.

I have a 13-month-old son and have also seen families at our clinic for over 6 years who have had these issues.

I would also suggest switching to a nontoxic desitin like a product from Burt's Bee's.

The table food may have a part to play in your daughters diaper rash. I would take her to the doctor and have it checked. To me it sounds like a yeast infection, so the doctor will give you a cream to put on which will clear it right up. she may have gotten it when you switched to table food because her body was adjusting to the new sugars. My daughter had the same problem, a little earlier that your daughter though. First it was thought to be a yeast infection. So, that's how we treated it. Nothing happened. I took her to urgent care and got this stuff called "poop goop". Nothing changed. I took her again and found that she was sensitive to certain foods. In her case it's dairy. So, we got 2.5% hydro cream + prednisone. That cleared it up in a day or so. Turns out she has eczema. It's on my side and my husband's side. Check into that if you have it on either side of your family. Good luck.

my boys had very sensitive bottoms as babies and I held stock in desitin so to speak. But one thing I did discover is if you dry their bottom thoroughly before applying desitin and also dry it when there is no rash it will heal faster and stay away longer. I used white cloth diapers and we called them our butt rags. :) It worked for us. I still dry my 2 year olds butt and he never gets a rash, but as soon as he visits someone who doesn't dry...hello rash! As far as a correlation with the food she is eating....I never found a match, but if you are seeing a definite match talk to your pediatrician about it.

Poor baby! Ouch!

I have two thoughts: one is that it is surely related to diet, the second that you could consider reducing the amount of time your daughter spends in diapers.

I see that you have plenty of advice in the diet area, so I'll stick to the diaper issue. Ever consider that kids out of diapers don't get diaper rashes? I didn't either until someone brought it to my attention. Even if you treat the rash, it can easily return (as you have discovered). Sometimes just letting her bottom breath can make a tremendous difference. Let your daughter go with out a diaper as often as possible. I know it's chilly to go bottom-less, you could get her some leggings (check out Baby Legs)to keep her legs warm. Keep a diaper and absorbent pad under her- - hopefully she is not too mobile yet... You might even have a sense of when she has to poo or pee-- put her on the potty if you get that sense and you can diminish messes. If this sounds crazy to you (as it did to me) but you are interested in more of this topic, check out a book called "The Diaper-Free Baby". It's a great concept and it has helped me help my 6 month-old reduce the diaper rashes she has. And reduced the number of diapers we have to use! YOu can get the book and the leggings at Peapods in St. Paul.

J.- Take your baby to the doctor NOW!! If you haven't been able shake the rash with an OTC med like desitin or butt paste, your little one may have a yeast infection. My boy (now 4 yrs) had similiar symptoms: raw, bleeding, weeping. It was painful for him to bathe. It has nothing to do with the food. The infection is not going away on its own. You'll get a cream that will work miracles in just a couple of days.

Maybe her system is just getting used to table food?! Not sure about that, you may check with your pediatrician. As far as the Desitin, my daughter had a lot of diaper rashes and my Dr. gave me the "home remedy" of equal parts maalox (liquid antacid) and cold cream. It sounds odd, but the maalox keeps the acid from the food away from their skin, and the cold cream is soothing. I would just put 1 cup of each in a ziploc bag, kind of mush it around, and keep it close to the diaper station. It is messy, but worked well. Good luck!!

J., sometimes kids will get a yeast-based diaper rash that won't respond to the usual diaper creams. Usually it is a raised red dot-looking rash that's most concentrated in the skin folds but can spread to all the skin. What you can try is over-the-counter anti-fungal or anti-yeast creams. The most easy to find one is clotrimazole (Lotromin). Try applying it twice a day and keep applying until 2 days after the rash has completely cleared. You can use other diaper creams in between applications. If it's not responding by 1 week, it's likely not yeast.

CHAP STICK !!! The first sign of food allergies for both my boys was a raw rear. It took many months before I figured it out with #1. My second son (almost 2) was test for food allergies before one year. Turns out he's allergic to eggs. It would have taken alot of sore rears before I fugured that one out. I used chap stick on their rears at each diaper change, which provided a nice thick layer of protection while we sorted it all out. I still use chap stick on son #2. It's a life saver for my boys and it doesnt' get my hands greasy. :) Buy about 20 tubes and mark the caps and bottom with a black permanent marker, so you never mix them up and use them on the mouth...:(

Hi J.,
I am a state licensed child care provider for 12 years so I have seen many diaper rashes and used numerous creams. The stuff I use the most with the best results is Boudreaux's Butt Paste.
They call it a paste but it is nowhere as bad (thick) as Desitin. It is brown and very easy to apply and has helped many of my little ones with sore bottoms.
As for the diaper rash itself, I'm sure it is because of the food change. The child goes from bland baby food to actual food. Most of the children that get it here is because of what they eat (not necessarily an allergy) One child gets it after they have pizza, spaghetti or anything with tomatoes in it. The parents and I just give him small amounts of the sauce on his food and gradually he could start eating the regular meal with the other children. It is kind of like breaking their system into the new taste.
I think you will just have to feed your child a few new things at a time and see what her reaction is to it and then just adjust the amount you give her.
I hope this helps.
K. :)

My girls did the same thing when I started feeding them baby food. The doctor said that we had a yeast infection. My oldest daughter had them off and on until she was potty trained. Give your baby a bath in some baking soda. That will calm the yeast a bit. Then put on some monistat 7 cream. Make sure that it is anti-fungal not just anti-itch. It makes a difference. If the rash is really bad, then mix the monistat with hydrocortisone. Only put the cream on a couple times a day. I recommend before bed and before naptime.

It could be a food allergy. Has she shown any diaper area sensitivity before based on what you ate? That could make her bottom red. Track what you feed her and her reactions. Aquafor is another great protectant - slather it all over her diaper area. Good luck.

What are you feeding her? A lot of fruits are acidic (sp?)and therefore may burn your little girls tush. I didn't start giving my son table food until he was a year old. Also, she's only been getting table food for a month now so maybe she isn't throughly chewing her food up. If they don't throughly chew their food up they poop more. Or at least that's been my experience. So, maybe just the fact that she's pooping SO much is hurting her tush??? If she sits in the poop for a while then that will irrate her tush too.

My daughter had these same problems and the doctor said it was a type of yeast infection?!?! They gave me a really great cream that cleared it up in just one day and it hasn't been a problem since. I've also been used a product made by Arbonne and its AWESOME...all of their baby care items are natural meaning they contain no bad chemicals!!! Hope this helps:)

A little about me:
I am 25 with a 3 year old daughter. I coach volleyball and teach classes for youth at our local YMCA a couple days a week. My main focus is my husband and my daughter.

One of my girls has multiple food allergies. I have to be very carefull that she eats nothing with eggs or any type of dairy. If something slips by and she eats food with somethng she is allergic to, she gets the same terrible diaper rash as you are describing. I would suggest having your daughter tested for allegies.

We had a similar issue with my 7 month old recently. We use either Burt's Bees Diaper Ointment or Waleda Diaper Ointment, then sift a little corn starch on top of that. The ointment protects the already raw skin and the corn starch helps with the acidic level of the urine and feces (which is what "burns" the skin) so the skin does not get more raw. Our pediatrician suggested the corn starch and it worked like a charm. We don't use the ointment anymore, simply a little corn starch when the rash begins to appear again. Good luck.

I work at a Naturopathic Clinic and we see similar problems often. If your child started having this problem after beginning to eat table food it seems likely that she is having an allergic reaction to some kind of food and that is how her body is expressing it. Conventional doctors can test food allergies but only test for immediate allergic reactions. These are the kind that tend to be more serious. Delayed response food allegies are harder to detect and are often times overlooked by doctors who practice conventional medicine. These types of food allergies can weeken a childs (or adults) immune system over time and could potentially lead to more skin erruptions or more frequent colds and things of that nature. There is so much a we can do to help you if this is in fact what is going on, and if it isn't one of our doctors can help you find out what is. Check out the website at www.naturopathicfamilyclinic.com. Call if you have any questions now or in the future###-###-####. By the way I know I sound like an advertisement. I am just passionate about my work. I have also been helped immensely by these doctors with my daughters food allergy issues which I discovered in just the manner you are describing in your post. I also see others are recommending elimination diet. This can be a very good way to find which foods are causing your issues but it can also be difficult to find the right food to avoid because the response could be delayed up to a day maybe two. We offer comprehensive blood analysis which shows results for 96 general foods. This is the quickest and easiest way to find out what foods to avoid. It can be done in office with a simple finger stick, quick and virtually painless.

It could be alergies or just sensitive skin. My son has issues with acid foods. Try avoiding citrus and tomatoes completely untli he is older. Try feeding just one type of food ofr a day or so like cereal, sweet potatoes or bananas. If these do not bother him add a new food. Go slowly. If you find a food that causes a rash eliminate it for now. You can try it again when he is older. Make sure his table food is unseasoned as this coould be irritating to his skin too.
