My son just turned a year old on 7-31. I started introducing the sippy cup to him at 11 months of age. I have tried all kinds, but he refuses them all. Does anyone have any suggestions on weaning from a bottle to a sippy cup?

What can I do next?

What worked w/ my son was to use a regular cup so he could drink just like us. We would hold it steady for him. He seemed to like this and the transition to a sippy cup was easy after that.

give him his milk in a bottle but have him drink everything else, juice, water, whatever out of a cup. Eventually you will be able to put the milk in the cup and he will take it. I used the Advent training cups for my son and they worked perfectly they have a soft spout much like a bottle nipple. Also you could try getting the cups that are shaped long and slender like a bottle so that it feels like one in his hands. Just be persistant. If he want to drink he will use the cup. Dont cave in and give him the bottle once you have made the transistion. I started my son on cups for his juice and water at 4 months the only thing he could drink out of a bottle was milk, so i had no problems at all switching the milk to a cup. Good luck. If the baby is thirsty he will use the cup!!

Hi M.. I had a hard time getting my son use to a cup also. But what I found out was that he liked the cups that have the straw and not the ones with the three holes at the top. So you might want to try those ones.

i know you said you tried them all, but did you try the nuby ones they seem to only sell at walmart? they are all soft spout tops and the spout itself is a little wider. they are the only ones declan will use and it was the same way with my friend's daughter. bonus though is they are less than $2 each.

There are so many different types to try. Find one that he likes. There are the ones with the straw in them. Get one that is bright colored. Also he might just not be ready to be weened from the bottle. Don't sweat it. Give it a month and try again

Hi M.
I am a mom of 3 great kids, my oldest is about to bless me with 2 baby girls. She is 23, I have 2 sons one almost 20 and one 11. I guess I am from a very old school with my kids. but anyway my Grandmother was from the mountains and she told me that if I got a almanc calendar and took the bottle away from my babies in the sign of the feet. They would never cry after it, and believe it or not it works. I say anything is worth a try. also I never really used a sippy cup, they drank straight from a regular cup. hope this helps. L.

how about a straw? have you tried those too? if ntohing will work and he absolutely just isnt having it, you might just want to skip the lids and go straight to a regular cup. it sounds harder than it is.
just give him a few days of consistent rules and practice and it will work out. GL!

Just keep at it. Mine was pretty stubborn so what I eventually tried was working from a sippy cup with a built in valved straw. It took him a while to stop getting that initial choke but once he figured out what speed to sip it at he went from those to other cups quite easily. The strawed cups I used are Nuby. Hope that helps.

Hi M.,

My son had trouble transitioning as well. He would play with the sippy cup, but not drink anything from it. My doctor suggested that one night, put all of the bottles away and only offer a sippy cup. Make sure they are out of sight. He will eventually drink more and more from the sippy cup. The doctor said that he will drink what he needs, and will make the transition. I was worried that he wouldn't drink anything, and he wasn't a great eater either. However, it worked! The first day, he didn't drink much, but the next day he drank more and I think by the third day, he did fine. Good luck!!!

I have a 3 1/2 year old and a 9 week old.

M.,

I am the mom of a beautiful baby girl who will be one at the end of August. I had problems with sippy cups also. What I did was get the Nuby brand sippy cup with the soft sippy top. It is "No Spill" and can be found at Wlamart for under $2.00. She wasn't getting the hang of it at first, but then we laid her down with it, just like she did with her bottle. At dinner time we would still help her and show her how it was done, but with in two weeks she had it down perfectly and even likes to show off by doing it one handed.

Good luck.

I have had the same problem. Not only that, but mine won't drink anything but milk. I have just decided, that I will keep introducing different cups, but not worry about it too much. I mean, he won't go to kindergarten with a bottle. he will let go when he is ready, and it is oly going to make both of us nuts if I force the issue.

I agree that a cup with a pop up straw may be the may to go. I also wanted to add that you may try giving your son a little more time. I know most pediatricians, parenting magazines, etc, say to have them off the bottle by 12 months. We tried and it was a fight to get him to take anything. I finally backed off a little and tried only once a week to get him to take a cup. Sure enough, one week when he was almost 14 months old it was like he finally decided it was time - took right to the straw cup and he hasn't used a bottle since. Some kids just need a little more time.

My son turned on 7-18 and also isn't fond of a sippy cup. At his one year check up my doctor said to stop the bottle cold turkey and in a couple of days he wouldn't miss it anymore. I was scared, but he drinks from a sippy cup now. He is picky about what cups he will take. I have found the ones with the softer spout he will take much better(Nuby and a Gerber cup) Hope this helps and good luck!

Try taking the valve out of a cup with 2 handles on it - sometimes they have trouble figuring out what they're supposed to do. Also, put something sweet like apple juice in it at first. You can use the valves later when your baby is more used to the mechanics of a cup vs a bottle.

My daughter, now 2 going on 20, had the same issue. I tried the hard sippy cups and then Nuby came out with a sippy cup with a top that wasn't hard it was like a bottle nipple (rubbery-if that helps). That worked out wonderfully for us. The only think about the Nuby sippy cups when it was dropped just perfectly it busted open. My husband and I had to clean up some nice messes. I haven't had a accident with the newer cups...maybe it was the older cups...either that my daughter isn't dropping them that much. Good luck!

My son who has a mind of his own likes a regular cup. After helping him with the regular cup while at the table he was easy to go to a sippy cup while away from the table. Just start with a little water or whatever in a regular cup and maybe he will be excited about using a sippy cup.

Well, I know that all kids are different, but what we did with our son, was let him pick out his own cup from the store, and at night when I would give him his bottle, I switched it up and would put warm milk in his cup instead of the bottle, and since he was used to a night bottle, he took on to the cup pretty well (that was the only way he would get milk at his bed time) and then after that, he would drink from his cup all day long. It just takes time and he will get used to a cup. I was lucky, no trouble with the bottle transition, now if I just get that darn pacifier out of his mouth! ;-)

Hello M.,

My daughter is 10 months and I purchased a sippy cup for Walmart that she really likes. The part that she drinks from is soft just like the bottle nipple. They are not that expensive, about $1.50. Maybe trying this type of up will help. Give him some time he will adjust to the cup in time. Have you tried putting some juice in his cup? Sometimes children will drink juice before milk from a cup because it is sweeter tasting. Good Luck!!!

Hi M.,

Mine went straight to a straw, too. Never used a sippy cup and they're 4 and 5 1/2 now. I was weaning them from nursing and not only would't they take a bottle or sippy cup, they wouldn't drink milk. I found out last Christmas that they are both somewhat allergic to it. Obviously, we got throgh it, but it was sometimes frustrrating and I think I bought every kind of bottle and sippy cup made!

Good luck!

my son went crazy over the NUPPY cup that is a 10oz with 2 handles. It is the only cup that he will take. It looks to me like the only one that he can get his mouth on like when I was nursing him. He is almost 1 yr old and he stated with the cup at 8 mths old and it took him only a couple of days with this cup. I hope this helps.

I wouldn't force it on him because it would be something else you would have to ween him from when he turns two. Try to see if you can slowly give him one less bottle every few days, kinda cold turkey, but don't do it all at once. It may work like a charm, you never know.

Have you tried the Avent kind with the handles? My daughter would only take that kind at first and now will take any kind. I introduced that to her at 5 months and she will be a year on tuesday and drinks for anything and everything now. Also, possibly try to give him some liquid by using a straw and putting your finger on the top to stop the liquid and then putting the end in his mouth and letting him suck on the straw. My daughter was introduced to a sippy cup with a straw like that and she loved it. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

My boys seem to like the sippy cups from Nuby. It was quite an adjustment for them. They are about $1.50 at Walmart. It is a 10 oz. cup with a soft nipple top shaped as a sippy cup top. Just need to watch out if they are teething or biting everything. Good luck with everything and just keep trying.

my 15 month old went from a bottle to a straw. it's actually better to go straight to a straw because a sippy cup is just like a bottle except it has a different nozzle. you eventually want to transition to a straw cup so why not now? my daughter started learning to drink with a straw at 8 months and is now beginning to drink from an open cup. Sippy cups are good for on the road or at a friends house and you dont want your child to spill, but that's about all. i had my 5 year old son in a sippy cup at 8 months but i didnt transition him into a straw until he was 2 1/2 which was my mistake. try different sippy cups with different sprouts, all kids have their preference. Target has the disposable cups and are cheaper. i just put them in the dishwasher and they're brand new again. They are durable and I use them for months before i buy new ones again. hope this helps.

My son is 13 months and we had the same trouble. Our pediatrician recommends going cold turkey. It worked great for us. He said that healthy babies will not dehydrate themselves, but they will be stubborn to get what they want. He said to just take the bottle away and offer him milk in a cup with his meals. The first day he only drank maybe a SIP or two during the day and then finally got thirsty enough that night that he downed it. Every day has gotten easier since then. He now drinks from his cup fine and loves it. I am even adding 1/2 water, 1/2 juice into the picture. I had to take it away briefly because he had learned to associate the bottle with milk and the cup with juice. I had to teach him to forget about the juice for a few days and get used to the milk before I could allow him to have it again with snacks. We are trying to do the same thing with his food. The pediatrician says to just let him have a small portion of what we are having. If he won't eat it and it is a reasonable meal for him to have, then just make him wait until the next meal. If he is hungry he will eat. My fixing him a few different things was going to contribute to him being a very picky eater. Getting him to the hungry point teaches him that he has to eat what is given to him becuase there are no substitutes, like the cheetos in the cabinet that he wants. They say if you keep offering the same thing that they won't eat, then eventually they will. They will learn to like it. Being a first time parent is tough! I want him to eat and drink well, but at the same time I want him to develop healthy eating habits.
