hello mamasource friends,
i browsed the air travel section and found very helpful tips as far such as keeping my cool on and packing a few surprises... promsie to do both!
it is a 13.5 hour gig and i am still nervous... good thing mom/granny is picking us up.
i am concerned about the packing: how much food (my babe is nursed/on homemade solids), how much clothing, how many diapees?
also, any suggestions on how to handle potentially challenging flight partners?
thank you so much!
cream cheese,
a.

I have never traveled that long, or with a baby that young (my son was 2 and 6 months old when we have flew), but I still have some experience. It's great that you're nursing, that will be a great way to keep him quiet and happy. Let him nurse and sleep as much as he wants, don't worry about messing up his schedule, the time change will do that for you anyway.

You probably don't want to take messy solids, stick with cheerios or whatever dry stuff you feed your son. I'll be flying in two weeks when my son is 8 and a half months old, and I'll be taking rice cakes. Not too messy, and they keep him entertained for quite a while. Take an extra set of clothes for you and probably two for him, and as for diapers, plan on changing him every two hours on the plane (or more often if you normally change him more). You might not need that many, but at least that way if he gets fussy sitting in a wet diaper, you can take care of it. Try taking toys that you know he will play with for a while, and make sure they are quiet. I hate being around people with kids that have annoying toys, so I wouldn't subject others to that. People may not be understanding if your baby is fussy, or you get up a lot, just let them know you're trying. Good luck!

I am so excited for you first off. I took my son to France with me many times and the best advice I have is to remember France has everything you need. They have good baby food, milk, diapers etc... I also walked around the plane many times as if we were taking a walk and that helped out with my son getting restless. Have FUN!!

Just a small suggestion; make sure to bring yourself a change of clothes, in case your little has an accident on you. I have talked to many parents who had to sit on a long flight in a stained, smelly shirt. Good luck to you!

I've traveled a few times with my very active, now 1.5 year old daughter and it was fine. I really think for longer flights the under one year ages are easiest to deal with flying. One thing I do is always check to see how full the flight is at the gate and if I can get a row with an empty seat(s) next to me. I always feed her right before we get on the flight and then she nurses for most of the flight, especially when she was around the 10 month age. Although at 10 months she was also fed a bit of homemade solids, she was really only interested in nursing. I'm not sure what time the flight is, but if it's around a nap time or at night then you might be lucky. I actually just recently flew and my daughter was being REALLY loud and squirmy, so the guy next to me actually took it upon himself to move seats. I think we tend to be way more sensitive to noise our babies make...most of the time people have told me after flights that my daughter was really well behaved, even when I thought it didn't go so well :-) Have a blast!

Fellow Mama,
I have been traveling with my little bundle of joy at least every 3months since she was 6 months...she is now 3yrs. My suggestion would be to carry enough food & diaphers to last for 24 hrs. because you never know if there will be a cancellation and/or delay of your flight. You can purchase the cold packs inserts and a small insulated lunch bag from Walmart, Target or even the grocery store. They work great. If you find that the packs have defrosted while in transit, you always ask the flight attendants for ice. As for clothing, I suggect that you put at least 4-5 outfits in your carryon. When you check in at the airport you can ask to be place in an empty or row. If the are none, ask for a row with an empty seat. If you still have no luck with that make sure that you don't have the middle seat...the isle seat will give you more flexibility. And please don't for get to bring Lots of toys and/or a DVD player.

I recently traveled solo with my then 8 month old. I was really nervous, but so many people were kind and helpful from flight attendants to other passengers. There was almost always someone to hold her for a minute, distract her while I filled out customs forms, etc.

A few recommendations. Take one or two small new toys or books in your bag so there is something novel to play with. Plus take a couple small favorites (for us, tearing up the airline magazine provided lots of entertainment too). Nurse while you take off and land to help with ear popping. If you can, feed solids and allow some floor play time at the airport before you take off. I don't know if you have to worry about keeping the homemade solids cold, but if you do it might be worth taking a couple jars instead just to keep it easy. I'd try the flavors at home first, though.

The suggestion to take a change of clothes for you is a good one... I was not so smart and did, in fact, have a diaper leak while holding her on the second leg of our flight. Not fun.

And once you get on the plane, if it isn't full just ask the flight attendant if there is a spot with an open seat next to it and they'll help you get resituated with a bit more space.

Have a great trip!
