Second Pregnancy - Sunnyvale, CA

I am currently 9 1/2 weeks pregnant with my third child. This is my second pregnancy and I am extremely tired. I am in bed no later than 8pm every night and it takes all I have to drag myself up in the mornings. I have 6 year old twin boys and had a gastric bypass (stomach stapled) 4 years ago. Does anyone have any advice for me? I am usually very energetic and not used to feeling like this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to all that offered your support and advice. I did speak with my doctor and am now on iron supplements. I am feeling much better and not as tired as quickly anymore. I am really looking forward to my first trimester being over. Thank you again.

Hi B.,
I'm in my 22nd week of my first pregnancy and I'm very happy in the second trimester. Right around were you are I was almost comatose! I would fall asleep around 7:30 - 8:00 each night. I would try and stay up but there was just now way, I was so tired all the time. I even cried on the way to work a few days because I was just so tired in the mornings. I'm similar in the sense that I am high energy and I am always on the go, so it almost made me feel depressed to be so tired all the time! The best advice I can give is try not to fight it too much and when you can grab a power nap, they helped me stay up all the way until 9:00. Sounds like that might be a little hard with two little boys, but a 30 minute nap did help me out a lot! Also know that around 12 weeks I had a renaissance and felt so much better and had my energy back, so hold on you are almost there.
Good Luck and I will send you extra energy vibes,
-H.

you may feel this way for four months. Prepare your family with asking for as much help as possible
from family and friends. If you can make two nights meals at a time or seek out community help in this area. I was exhausted for four months myself with a five and nine year old and a husband who traveled two weeks a month. Let's face it, it's your time to take some greatly needed naps and mommy time. Good luck, and you will get thru it. Melyssa

I had a DS 8 months ago. I am 54 so not dealing with any pregnancy issues but I do know that I had a long recovery. I was extremely tired for almost 3 months. I have a feeling it might be the malabsorption but I would definately and quickly check with the surgeon that did your bypass. You may need extra supplements for the duration of the pregnancy.

There are some chat rooms that you may want to log into for information, but check with your dr. first.

I do remember being very tired in the first trimester of my first pregnancy, having to come home from work and take a 1-2 hour nap just about every day.

Good luck and congratulations.

I'd talk to your dr. to make sure you are getting sufficient nutrients. With the stomach stapling you might have been getting enough for yourself but with the increased energy demands your body may need help...more frequent snacks? And give yourself some credit...6 year old twins that would make anyone tired and last time around you didn't have kids who required your full attention!

I'm on my 2nd pregnancy also (now about 15 weeks) and recall around that time, I was also extremely tired and also went to bed early. Happened in my first as well. I took iron supplements recommended by my doctor and feel that helped a lot. Check with your doctor about this. When you enter into your 2nd trimester, you should feel a lot better! Hang in there.

at 9 weeks this is a typical pregnancy symptom. It should pass in a few weeks. You might want to checck your iron levels though just incase.

Good Luck!

Hi there -

Gosh that sounds so familiar. I'm pregnant with my 2nd , but in my 3rd trimester. My first child, I wasn't fatigued, I was extremely sick and nauseous. My girlfriend who was 6 months behind me in pregnancy was extremely fatigued. (she is pregnant again and is very fatigued again in her 7th week). But after the 1st trimester - she regained her normal energy levels with her first.

But with my 2nd - I spent my first trimester falling asleep at 7 for 2 hours, then getting up and going back to bed at 11. I was soooo tired. But when I hit mid-late 4th month - I started getting my energy back and am now back to normal (more tired than with my first because I have an active 18mo. old). But definitely back to normal sleeping schedule and have energy for most of the day.

I wouldn't worry about it too much! You're having a child 6 years later than you did your boys...and your body may just need to give more to grow this little one.

Hi B.,

I would check with your doctor -- maybe your iron count is low....that always makes you feel more sluggish/tired. You might also take some B vitamins, they're supposed to give you more energy. Hope that helps! Good luck, J.

It's pretty normal. Your body is going through lots of changes like increasing your blood volume by two and half times. The best advice I can give you is drinking lots of fluids and resting which I'm sure is not very easy having two kids around. Good luck.

I felt the same way early in my pregnancy. It passed after a few weeks without me changing anything, just trying to get as much rest as I could. I figured my body was telling me what it needed, and I should listen!

I had a very healthy pregnancy (the fatigue was not an indicator of any problem), and gave birth without complications to a very healthy baby. So try not to worry. And do talk to your midwife or doctor for ideas - midwives are full of good ones!
