a spin off of my biking question.

What do you think about rollerblading/skating/ice skating while pregnant?

I did it today and was wondering if id continue as i got further along......i never fall.

ETA..my doctor told me to stay active and im looking for more ways to do cardio. Its funny that most people said that biking was ok,,,but this is not. Im not disagreeing, i really do want the spectrum of opinions. Technically i think i could just as easily fall while running. But thats jmo

What can I do next?

When I was skating competitively, everyone kept skating through their pregnancies. I think the main difference is; those who skate, and those who go skating. AKA how good you are at it.

I mean, people quit doing axels and lutzes, and the hockey types didn't play on a team anymore... just knocked the puck around... but everyone who did it every day, still kept skating every day. They just toned it down.

It would NOT be a good time to learn or 'get better'. If you already skate, though, have at. Just tone it down.

My answer for the bike riding question still stands for this one as well - why take the chance? Aren't there plenty of other ways to stay active and fit and get some exercise in that don't involve potentially falling?

A neighbor of ours was pregnant and tragically suffered a miscarriage at 5 months because she accidentally slipped and fell down their stairs at home. Again, is it really worth the risk? Just because you "never fall" doesn't mean you couldn't! Use some common sense please!

ETA: if you are looking for some cardio, you can still run - yes, you could fall, but I doubt it's as likely as it would be skating. There is also power walking, rowing on a rowing machine, and swimming, not to mention pre-natal yoga.

My understanding is that is is spectacularly difficult to injure the baby in a fall. Not impossible, just freakishly difficult. The baby is pretty well protected by all that water.

It is possible, even likely, that you will injure yourself. Your center of balance is off, your ligaments loosen up, and your reflexes change to protect your abdomen rather than your limbs and face. In any activity you do, be careful, stay well within your abilities, and consider wearing more protective gear than usual.

Have fun!

I was taking ice skating lessons when I found out I was pregnant. I finished the series, but then stopped. My instructor said she had skated throughout her pregnancies. The difference was, I was taking beginner lessons, she was the instructor. If you are skilled at an activity, it is safer to continue doing it.

Use your judgment. This is your third pregnancy, not that they all proceed the same, but you should be aware of how your balance, stamina, and strength might change during a pregnancy.

I continued running on hilly dirt hiking trails until my 7th month. I never fell. I suppose I could have.

No, you can fall doing either of those things. It's not worth risking your baby's safety. There will be plenty of time for that once you're done being pregnant.

Depends upon how pregnant you are. If you are in the first trimester, then your center of gravity hasn't really changed and you aren't more likely to fall or lose your balance than at any other time. But after you start growing, your center of balance changes and that changes everything.

For me, personally, none of it was an option. I was just too "morning' sick every day all day to do much of ANYthing. :(

How about swimming? No diving just swimming and that will use all your muscles. My doctor told me that many years ago. But I would leave the roller/ice skates alone.

I played volleyball while pregnant. Go for it, as long as you feel up to it.

Nooooo. In my mind there is a MUCH greater risk of falling on your stomach and hurting the baby than riding a bike where you could possible land in more positions. That's just what I think.

your sence of balance will be really off with a thrity lb belly soon. i personally would not risk falling on my baby. incase someone else ran into you or got in your way and you had to move quickly and fell. accidents happen and after you start showing i would do less "risky" exercises.

If you enjoy it and are good at it keep doing it. You will have to adjust as your center of gravity changes, but I continued walking and even mowed my grass with a push mower when I was pregnant. I did not treat it like an illness, I treated it like training for a marathon because I was doing natural childbirth and I think I came out of it alot better and got my body back alot faster than those who laid around and acted like they were ill.

One of the problems is that as your pregnancy progresses, your center of balance changes... while you may not really notice it, your chances of falling while rollerblading/skating/ice skating will increase.

Why chance it?

Well, on a bike the chance of falling and landing directly on your hiney is slim. The chance of handle bars hitting your stomach is very real but the baby is deep inside.

I think at least one of my miscarriages came from a fall where I landed on my bottom. The hit on the bottom is directly below the baby and can jar it loose. I would not risk hurting the baby in this way. It is probably okay but it might just take one time of someone bumping into you.

If you know what you are doing then I say go for it. Just keep to the side when its not so busy and don't do anything fancy. Of course I don't mean the day you are due but as long as you're comfortable.

No, not so safe...wouldn't have done it when I was pregnant. It's bad enough to fall down and break your tail bone but imagine having that kind of pain and being preggers....oh, I shudder thinking about it :-)

My doctor told me it was okay for me to go skiing when I was pregnant. I did. But my center of gravity was really off and it made me nervous. I decided that it wasn't worth the worry. So I quit after about a half a day. If you feel like your balance is fine, I don't see a problem with it. Even if you do fall, it's more of a risk to you than the baby. That little person is pretty well protected in there! Oh... one other thing... about three weeks before my middle child was born, I tripped over a palate in a store (that's another story!) I fell flat on my stomach. I hit really hard and it knocked the wind out of me. It scared me and embarrassed me. But the baby was fine and, obviously, decided to stay put for another few weeks. :D

If you are very good at it then I could see doing it in the early parts of the pregnancy but by the halfway point then your balance will change.

I suppose you could bike on an exercise bike later on in the pregnancy.

I said yes to the biking but I'm going to say no to the rollerblading/ice skating. I probably feel that way because I can handle myself on a bike but not skating. I guess if your comfortable then go ahead but take it easy!
