Anyone else in the area have a child or children suffering from this mess? It's been going on in our house now for 4 weeks. I never imagined a virus staying for so long. Every time they have no symptoms for 3 or more days, I start to introduce regular foods back into their diet. It seems to be dairy that makes them have a relapse. I don't know what to do anymore. The holidays are upon us and I am terrified to have them around my elderly Grandparents in fear that they will pass it to them. I have been sanitizing, washing linens, washing toothbrushes and everything I can think of to get rid of this virus, It just wont go away!!! My oldest is better now, but my 3 year old still have loose stool and upset tummy every time he eats. Anyone have any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your responses. I am steering clear of all dairy and that seems to be working. My youngest have normal stool again and we are easing away from the brat diet, but still feeding him bland foods. I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks again and good luck to all you out there who had to deal with this.

Hi D.,

I have no experience with this virus, but to add to what Amanda said, you can also get probiotics (like acidophilus) in chewables or in granules that can be added to kids food. The granules are behind the counter at the pharmacy because they have to be refrigerated, but you don't need a prescription. The chewables (there's one with a big picture of a strawberry on the front that my kids LOVE) you can sometimes get at GNC (don't get their own brand -- they're gritty) or at Home Economist (South Blvd near southend or Independence Blvd...I don't know if there are any other locations). These are the good bacteria that you system needs.

Good luck!!

What a terrible thing to deal with, I have always eaten rice with diarrhea- it is very binding and mild. I don't know how to get them to eat it, but yogurt with the enzymes is a must right now, and you can mix it in- also, you can put it in a drink and blender it. Try it anyway.

We had that last Christmas and it was aweful!!! The whole family got it!! Whatever you do, don't give them milk or any milk products. It was a while before my kids could handle that. I bought soy milk and even though they didn't love it, they got used to it after a few days (both my kids love milk) Stick with a very bland diet (applesauce, bananas, bread, crackers) My pediatric nurse from when I was kid told me not to feed my 2 year old ANYTHING for 24 hours after she got sick and after over a week of vomit, I tried it. Sounds cruel, but it worked. Small amounts of liquid only. I also gave them pedialite instead of regular juice; that has too much sugar and upsets their stomach. I was told by her doctor that even water can make them sick if their stomach is still weak. Good luck; I know it's hard.

Mine had a bought of it last year, and the little girl I kept kept passing it back and forth. My suggestion is to disinfect EVERYTHING. You don't want to pass it to any adults because it comes in a shole new package. My husband and I both got it, and while it only lasted a few days it was NOT fun at all. We sprayed anything and everything including the car and car seats. Hope you get rid of it. I know it's no fun at all.

My Advice comes from 7 yrs experience in childcare and personal with my son. You need to completely cut out dairy for a while and go easy on food. A BRAT diet usually helps the GI tract recover.(Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast)
Also the loose stools can come from a bacterial imbalance. You can help this by letting them drink sweet acidophilus milk. My little one drank it for about a week and it helped tremendously. Good Luck and I hope this helps for the holidays.
