Re-gift to Your Own Kids?

I'll try to make this short. We have two iPads, the wife has an iPad 2 she uses for work and I was given her original iPad just because. The iPad I have pretty much isn't used. Literally it sits on my nightstand and currently has a dead battery. It does get used (by the kids) for the occasional road trip.. or honestly when we remember we even have it.
I was thinking of giving it to our 8 yr old for Christmas (this isn't about whether or not an 8yr old needs an iPad).
So would you re-gift to your own kids? Why or why not?

What can I do next?

Absolutely. When my son got an iPod touch he gave his Kindle Fire to his sister for her birthday. She didn't bat an eye at the fact it was a hand-me-down.

If money was tight I would regift it, or if that is what he is asking for. But since I already own it and he knows about it I would be more likely to just give it to all the kids to share outside of Christmas rather then it being a gift for one (unless you have only one, then go for it)

Absolutely! My dad gave my son his laptop that he never used as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago. Why do we have to be wasteful and always have new stuff?

HECK YES. My kids would be utterly thrilled. Put it in a case in their favorite color to make it seem "new." You're an OCD guy, J., I'm sure you still have the box it came in. ;-)

ETA: I say put it in the box, and put the pretty case in a different box. More stuff to unwrap. :-) A new pair of headphones in the stocking too.

Kids are very much programmed to appreciate the "Reduce, Reuse,Recycle" mantra. I think your 8 year old will be thrilled to get a working iPad. I know mine would.

Mine are dying for us to let them have our old phones. But we, are still holding out on the personal phones though. Maybe we will give a regifted phone for Christmas this year...our oldest just turned 14. Thanks for the idea J.!!

I say wrap that bad boy and put it under the tree!!!

Of course.
Saves money and if it's something the kid can use and I have no use for, why on earth wouldn't I?

I think an 8 year old would be thrilled to get an ipad, re-gifted or not. It shouldn't matter if you bought it new or it was handed down. If you are giving it to your 8 year old to be theirs, and they can use it more regularly (besides the occasional road trip) I would think they would be delighted. I think it also sends a good message about not being wasteful with $$, and to appreciate the thought of a gift. I would do it!

Sure..if they were going to use it. Why not? Get a new case for it..charge the battery and let the kid be on his/her merry way!!

Have a re-gifted to my kids? I think there were presents received late for a birthday that I held for Christmas...but I WOULD do it if it made sense...and this makes sense...

Sure would. I might add a nice new case or some other accessory. I always buy used DS games for my grandsons. The love them because they can get a couple games instead of just 1 brand new game.

yes, I sure as hell would!!! IN FACT, this Christmas my 8 year old is getting an old ipod that we need to erase all the songs off of and a clock/ipod port that has been sitting on my kitchen table. We will get him a $25 itunes gift card so he can download his own music and he will be THRILLED.

We've always done a lot of gift-passing at our house. If I had an iPad (I don't) and an eight-year-old to give it to, I'd do it in a heartbeat - along with some sort of cool new accessory for it. And a new battery, of course!

Absolutely. Then it becomes HERS and I bet it gets used a lot more. I agree with Christy - put it in a nice case and load some apps on it so it's ready to go on Christmas morning...fully charged of course. She will never know the difference.

Our kids won't get theirs in boxes...they will get them in cases and ready to go.

Re-gifting is a wonderful thing. My father in law still gives us his old stuff, for example he gave us his old snowblower (with two flat tires) when he bought a new one. It may not have been our official x-mas gift but it would have been fine if it was!

I think my neighbor did the same for her 10 year old, she bought a new IPad and gave her old one to her son as his bday present. Nothing wrong with it!

Yep, she won't care that it isn't new.

In fact, my baby is getting lots of re-gifts for xmas. I returned all the baby toys family members gave my oldest, and my youngest will be getting them for xmas. I bought her a few new shiny things from Santa, but everything else? Re-gifted from a stockpile of toys i have on the storage room.

last year we gave our 3 year old an old phone. he was thrilled with his re-gift.

What's the difference between that and buying a refurbished iPad?
I don't know too many 8 year olds that would feel "above" a used iPad.
Just be sure to tighten up the parental controls!

Oh, yes, I'd totally re-gift something I wasn't using and would think they would like.

And with something that expensive-- I think it should be a special gift instead of just passed along. As with any delicate item, teach your kiddo to take good care of it! The idea should be on 'it's the thought that counts' not how much is spent.

I have Christmas Angel Chimes (the ones with the candles) a friend re-gifted to me (she had some which I'd admired, her sister gave her a second set) and I just love that she remembered how much I'd liked them. My son loves them, too. Come to think of it, I think I'll get them out today!

Sure, why not?

An 8 year old does not need a brand new iPad. An 8 year old is lucky to have an iPad -- I don't even have one.

Merry Xmas!

Our kids have always gotten our hand me down electronics if we don't use them anymore, my kids have been given my old laptops when I upgrade for their schooling. Most of our electronics are bought for the family to begin with though so there isn't really this is yours and that is mine to start with. Re-gifting an ipad in our house doesn't work because it's always been for the family and remains so even when upgraded. But if it would work we absolutely would.

We "re-gifted" an iphone for my daughter to use as an i pod for her birthday. Loaded it up with her music, a bunch of games and got a new case. She was thrilled.

Yes, I would do this. I think it is a great idea.
Children love the idea of something being "all theirs" so just knowing that the Ipad belongs to THEM is kindof a big deal. Ha ha, as a side note, my 8 year old's Christmas list had "all mine" written after each item. While it is good for kids to learn to share, it sure is nice for them to also have something that belongs just to them.
