I have a 4 month old and he has a rash that shows up on his arms by his elbows and the back of both of his legs. The rash comes and goes. Some days it is bad and then other days it is not bad. HE has had it since he was 2 months old. The doctor said to change lotion which we did and it did not work then she told us to change laundry deteregent and we did and it did not work. She now tells us to change formula to the hypoallergenic formula. I am not sure if we should change formula because it does not get worse when he eats and did not show up till he was 2 months old. I am not sure if I should change his formula for a month adn see if that works or take him to a dermtologist. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks.

My daughter is 3 months and has the same thing. My doctor recommended Aquaphor. It's an ointment sold over the counter at pharmacies and I've even seen it at the supermarket in the baby section. It's worked great. I put on a thin layer after her bath and it has completely cleared up the rash. If I don't put it on because we're in a rush the rash tends to come back. My doctor also said to avoid clothes that contain any polyester, cotton only.

Did you try aquafor? My daughter has sensitive skin and broke out in a rash on her tummy arms and back around 2 months also. My dr said it was just dry, sensitive skin and to try aquafor. I did and it helped within a day. Give it a try - good luck!

I agree; it sounds like eczema. My son has had it since he was 2 months old. The only thing I would add is to watch the creams/lotions with lanolin in them. I tried aquafor and it made the rash worse. TUrns out my son is allergic to lanolin and those solutions only made the rash much itchier. I use neutragena hand cream on him. Its thick like aquafor, but doesn't has any lanolin or frangrance. I also use baby oil gel or vaseline right after a bath, bathe him less frequently so his skin doesn't dry out. When he gets really itchiy, a little hydrocortizone 0.5 percent helps. His usual spots are inside his elbow and behind his knees.

I am not a doctor, but I don't think the rash is being caused by an allergy to anything - otherwise, it wouldn't just show up on his elbows and the back of his legs. My daughter was allergic to a lotion I put on her, and the rash occurred everywhere the lotion was applied. I would definitely go to a dermatologist for an exam. So many internal problems are exhibited through symptoms on the skin. A dermatologist would be the best person to determine what is causing the rash.

Hi S.,
My son starting to get a rash around 2 months also, in the same spots. Only thing is that it was on his face too. Not to worry or rush off to the dermtologist. My doctor had me put all kinds of stuff on my son. First things first, go back to the dreft laundry deteregent and do not give him the hypo formula, it stinks and it taste just as bad as it stinks, I have two cans (very expensive cans I'll tell you) at home. I use Aveeno Eczema lotion and wash (target has it in the medicine aisle it's in the same aisle as all the other medicine lotions - not the washes and regular lotions) on my son, but I also have a prescripition lotion from the doctor that I use. It's a compound lotion with Hydrocotizone (spelling?) in it. I'm not sure where you live but I see and awesome doctor in Livingston, NJ (saved my son's life twice). I swear by him and I'd be happy to give you his information. I hope this helps - it does get better btw.

My daughter has this as well. I only give her a bath every three days or so which helps. I've used both Aquafor and olive oil or baby oil, all of which have helped. But I would try cutting back on the bath time first.

Sounds like eczema to me. Eczema is often, but not always an allergic reaction to food or environment. My oldest and youngest both suffer and I notice they flare up with the seasons. Aquaphor is what I used on my kids when they were that young. It really helped. A referal to an allergist might be a good idea to rule out any potential formula allergy. Good luck! Quite shocked that a pediatrician would not know/recognize a rash as they are so prevalent in childhood. We have had a vast array of rashes here and all were properly diagnosed. Does your pediatrician share a practice? You may want to see someone else for another opinion or someone who is more familiar with rashes.

It sounds a lot like eczema. Your doctor was right about changing lotions and detergents but you need to make sure that everything you use on your baby is fragrance-free and dye-free. I have a 4-yr old daughter and a 16-month old son who both suffer from moderate to severe eczema. In a nutshell, eczema is very dry skin so you need to moisturize all the time (every couple of hours for us). You can bathe him everyday, use unscented soap or baby wash like aquaphor baby wash or aveeno creamy wash. Keep his baths short (no more than 10 minutes). To moisturize, I normally use Aquaphor in the winter and Vaseline creamy petroleum jelly in the warmer months as Aquaphor is very sticky. Don't use baby detergent as they are usually lightly scented. I use All or any detergent that is unscented and dye-free. With my kids, it's usually worst when it's very cold or very hot. We moisturize constantly throughout the day, it helps a lot. Just a note, eczema is at times triggered by food allergies but I think it's samrt to see a dermatologist first before changing the formula. Good luck!

It sounds like eczema to me too, but you should definitely take him to a dermatologist for a correct diagnosis and also the safest creams to use. A lot of children have it as babies and grow out of it. (I did) Good luck

I just brought my guy of 5 months to the allergist. They can do a series of scratch tests on his back. My guy didn't even flinch at the testing. Also could it be hives or heat rash? Either a derm or allergist is best especially if your ped. has exhausted all other ideas.

ask your pediatrician to check for HSP(purpura).
my 3 yr old had the same kind of rash, only on her elbows and on the back of her legs for over 2 months.

Changing formula won't hurt the baby any.You have nothing to lose.A baby can acquire an allergy at any time. What didn't bother them last week can suddenly bother them this week. They are very sensitive and their bodies are still changing.
I would still see a dermatologist on safety side, though. There isn't any harm in any of it.

This is happening to us! Same all around, four month old, rash started at two months on arms and legs only, except my daughter is breastfed, so we are thinking it was something in my diet.

Here is what we have done so far: we stopped using lotion because we were told that lotions have alcohol, even baby lotions. We use Vaseline and/or Aquaphor on her arms and legs after bath and/or before bed, put her in a long sleeve sleeper and it makes a big difference, but it still doesn't fix it.

Her skin is no longer red, but it is still patchy and rough. We had her at the pediatrician yesterday and he said it was just dry skin form the winter, don't worry about it, watch it and let him know if it gets worse.

It doesn't seem to bother her, she doesn't itch at it or get fussy, so we are just monitoring it. The Dr. also said that if she shows no signs that it bothers her to not make changes, just wait. I would not change the formula if I were you as it is so hard to find one that works with your baby's stomach. Hope this helps and good luck.

My sons suffer from eczema and have since the day they were born. It was different for all three. My oldest would get thick patches, while my middle son would get rashes that itched him to the point he would wake up from naps bleeding starting at about 6 months, while my youngest son just gets extra dry spots on his legs. My middle son also suffered from diaper rash horribly.

We tried everything. Changing lotions, detergents, over the count products, prescriptions, and other direct sales companies' products. It wasn't until a friend introduced me to Arbonne's Baby Care line that I saw results. My children are 8 months to 7 1/2 years and I use the products on all three of them.

I read posts on here about people who swear by certain lotions but they MUST apply them twice a day and it makes me even more thankful to have found Arbonne. I use the Hair and Body Wash when they get baths/showers and when it seems like things are starting to flair up, I use the lotion. Within a week the dryness and rashes are usually gone again and as wonderful as that is, it's even more wonderful that it rarely happens. In addition, I used their Rejuvenating Cream on my son's face because I was worried about him scarring but you can't see where he was affected AT ALL!

If you have any questions or would like to see any of our company Before and After pictures, please feel free to email me at ____@____.com can also visit the shopping tab at my site to see the products: http://APerfectMoment.MyArbonne.com.

I wish you the best and don't blame you for not wanting to keep just grasping at straws. I'd really like to see if we can help you because I believe we can.

Food allergies were the reason my son has a rash. He was allergic to milk, egg and beef. Consider changing your sons formula to a soy based product. Also be very careful when introducing new foods. Allergy reactions build up in your system, so repeated exposure to a food will create a reaction. That is why they recomend a three day process for introducing new food items. The lotion will do nothing but soothe the reaction. Look to find the reason for the rash, eliminate that and the rash will go away.

I agree with the eczema diagnosis - but here's something else you can try... I actually never needed the crams for my baby's eczema. he had a mild case and it went away after a few days of applying Aquaphor - the really thick cream that comes in the tub. It can't hurt, so you can try it and not worry. Put a good slather on once a day and it might go away after 3 to 4 days. Good luck!

Try bathing him in WATER only and use a gentle soap from a health food store to clean his bottom. This should clear it up. The potential problem is that while you keep switching product-the products that you swith to are conventional products with the same hazardous chemicals that your baby is reacting to. Those chemicals cause not only rashes but potentially skin cancer and internal cancers because what goes on the skin goes into the body. Here is a website for you to visit for more information:

My experience is that family practice docs/pediatricians don't have enough experience to give good advice on rashes. Ususally a dermatologist can see what the problem is right away and get you on the right track.
Good luck.

S., I agree it sounds like eczema. My daughters have it and it is due to allergies. If your pediatrician is not good with diagnosing and treating this,(sounds like he is not) I would see a dermatologist. Mine was and I got creams that would take care of the outbreak asap. Trick is to keep on top of it and apply cream immediately and it won't get out of control. This is allergy related (pollen, flowers, mold during the fall, etc.) and changing laundry detergent, shampoo or soap, will not take care of the problem. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me. Have a great day. N.

has any one suggested or ruled out eczema? eczema can come and go, be found on any part of the body, start out looking like little piimples but if it becomes severe the bumps seems to cluster together and expand. heat and sometimes certain foods will also make it worse. i have been told the dermatoligists that stress will evern cause eczema. hope you find some relief for your little one.

It sounds like eczema to me. Both my kids have it, and it only comes out in the warm weather. I never switched their formulas it wouldn't of made a difference. It is very common. Let me know how it works out. Also we use aquaphor, it is a life saver. I couldn't of went through all these years without it.
