Hi mamas! I am looking for suggestions for protein sources for our 10 month old. He has been on fruits/veggies/cereals and we are starting to introduce protein/meats. What worked well for you?

ETA: I should have added- as specific as you can get with prep is great (for the meats). =)

We have already done egg yolks and he loved them! Haven't tried anything else yet.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Denise, that made me laugh out loud. Those things are quite repulsive. =)

NBinMN - We make most of our own baby food, and grab some jars now and again when we are pressed for time. Thanks for the info!

My kids both also loved those nasty meat sticks. They have 3 or 4 kinds of them now. Gerber makes them. I would always open up the jar and rinse out all of the water/gel before I put them on a plate.

Eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, soft cheeses.

Much to my horror, my son LOVED those disgusting meat sticks that come in a baby food jar!

Oh yeah, those meat sticks are usually a huge hit...yuck. The Gerber ones repulse me less than the actual Vienna Sausages though. Also, what about lunch meat and sausages. I try to usually get nitrate free in both varities and my daughter ate lunch meat like crazy! My son loved sausages cut up in small bites. Other that that it's really easy to steam some chicken in the microwave (you can get those ziplock steam bags) and shred it or cut it up small for him to feed himself or put in a quesadilla, soup, mac and cheese, whatever! Both my kids were 100% on table food at 10 months and I never wanted to give them jarred meats (besides the sticks) so I just gave them bits of whatever I made for dinner, including fish, lamb, pork and beef.

refried beans, black beans, lima beans, fried tofu, scrambled eggs, greek yogurt, cheese, bits of chicken or tiny bits of soft beef, quality lunchmeat...these are our daughters favorites!

nonfat greek yogurt can have up to 16g of protein per serving. It has no taste when served in their milk (even two table spoons is plenty of protein) and what is great is that if baby does not like the taste of, say, tylenol or any other baby meds, this is a great way to "neutralize" that medicine taste.

Add an egg yolk, and some banana puree/probiotic smoothies to the mix.

I do home daycare and am on a USDA sponsored Food Program, with specific requirements for food service for the kidlets. For infants, for the protein source, IFIC (Iron Fortified Infant Cereal) qualifies as the protein source for a meal for an infant, so I never even offer those nasty meats in a jar. My cat won't even eat those. Ish.

Plus any jar baby food (BTW) that is a meal or a dessert, does not qualify by these USDA standards...just an FYI. They are chock full of fillers. SO if you think you are giving your baby a good "meal" that has components for said good meal in it by offering these, think again.

I am a bit of a baby food snob, sorry. Just go straight to table foods...stuff YOU eat. Grilled chicken, turkey, etc. Its not difficult to modify, chop, etc what you are eating for an infant to eat it. The window of "needing" baby food is so short. The day a child turns 1 they are off the baby menu here (as per food program)...and for many, I have them on total table food WELL before then.

Good luck!

EDIT to add~ A fave of my toddlers (has been since they were about 9/10 mos old..they are 14 and 15 mos now..is a copycat version of Olive Gardens Pasta fagioli soup. Has white and red beans in it (I add an extra can of the pink--lite red..whatever.), canned diced tomatoes, ground beef, carrots, celery and pasta..I get the little circles similar to the restuarant....my baby/toddlers LOVE this...I cut a few bits smaller for them when theyw er eyounger and drain the little bit of sauce off...but I make it thick and hearty. Lots of beans for protein..messy!!! But they gobble it up and we (big peeps) love it too !

We have done meats and beans mostly. My daughter hates meat by itself so we always have to mix it with something else (typically beans or sweet potatoes)/
