Potty Training: Should We Just Ditch the Diapers?

I am currently potty training my 25 month old son. He shows numerous signs of being ready including: going pee in the potty since 18 months, staying dry through out naps, knows the names of potty, pee, pee, and poo, poo, and can go pee in the potty up to 5 times a day with my cues. So my next step is using underpants during the day. He had one accident today (second 1/2 of the day) but then remained dry from 6:30-8:30 with my prompts to use the potty. I guess I am wondering if we should ditch the diaper for naps and bedtime as well?? Also what do you do in public? I also can't honestly see myself staying at home all week and having him pee every 15 minutes and never leaving the house (I know some people use this method). So any advice or suggestions would be great!!!

When his bladder is more mature (i.e. ready for potty training completion) then he will be able to hold his urine for longer periods of time. If you leave the house in underpants, just be sure to bring some extra pants (and socks too)! I started with just short trips with my son to help build up his (and my) confidence in his ability to stay dry. Good luck!

PS. I'm not a big fan of ditching the diapers personally because unless you like to change sheets a lot and wash the cover for the car seat, life can get pretty messy.

Hi!
We are pretty much at the same point with my son. I use pull ups at bedtime and naps, though at nap he usually stays dry. I use the Gerber training pants with plastic "pants" over them when we go out. I feel if he wears a diaper he is more likely to just pee in it, but this way his clothes stay dry. He has finally gotten where he can go 1-2 hours with no accidents, but I just can't wait for him to tell ME he has to go!

Good Luck!

My daughter is 23 months, and we've been daytime trained for 3 weeks now. We use pull-ups for naps and bedtime. Naps she stays dry, but has an awful habit of pooping in her sleep. Bedtime, there's no chance. We'll cross that bridge when she's ready. I'm guessing that won't be for another year. When we leave the house (more than 15 minutes), we wear "bye-bye panties" over her regular underpants. They are the gerber waterproof training pants. Sometimes the pants still get a little wet on the outside, but it is not crazy. I tried going to the park without them yesterday. Bad idea - she peed off the monkey bars like a geyser!

My son was similar, except he didn't need much reminders from me. I went cold turkey for daytime and he was almost 100% successful instantly. We did still carry extra clothes, etc and definitely reminded him to go before getting in the car, etc. For naps, we also did underwear at the same time since he was waking up dry. Again, no issues. A couple of days later we went with underwear at nighttime and we only had occasional accidents. He was physically ready so we were lucky. We did and still do have protective mattress covers on so even for the rare incident, it wasn't a big deal. Good luck!
