Possible Milk Allergy?

well, just a breif summary, my son keeps getting a diaper rash and not able to go to the bathroom. Just comes out a little at a time. I thought he was holding it because of the rash. I kept him off milk for 3 weeks and everything was fine. I gave him milk the other day and now everything is back, the holding, the rash and also put two and two together, he gets a little rash on his cheeks! Now he can eat cheese, ice cream milk with cereal etc. This seems to happen when I give him a sippy full of milk whether it be straight or chocolate. I think this could be a milk allergy. :Just wondered if anyone had/has the same problem and what was done about it. I do have a call into the doctor, but I usually get the same if not better advise here! :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, turns out he does have a milk allergy. For those of you saying if he did he couldn't eat ice cream, you are confusing milk allergy which is a reaction to the protein in the milk to lactose intolerance. I switched him to soy and so far so good. The doctor said to try milk again in a few months, but after what I have been going through I don't want to press my luck! Thank you everyone that responded with your suggestions and personal stories, it really does help.

I would suggest a blood test. My daughter is allergic to eggs. We had a very tough time. You can do an elimination diet, but it's difficult. She was a baby and was reacting to something that I was eating. I did the elimination diet and thought it was wheat. Later had the blood test and it was eggs. I had to take my daughter to her doctor to get a Rx. Then I had to take her to a lab. I would suggest taking another person who your son is comfortable with. It took 3 of us to hold down my daughter to take her blood. It sounds terrible, but she was younger. If it is milk there are many alternatives available. My daughter loves the almond chocolate milk. I get the unsweetened and add stevia instead of using sugar. Good luck!

Both of my kids react really strongly to dairy. They get congested, hyper, and tummy upsets. They have cheese and yogurt sometimes, for milk they drink fortified rice, almond, or hemp milk. It makes a big difference! Good Luck!

My neice and brother in law have a milk allergies. First of all... if he were allergic to milk that would include ice cream, cheese and milk in cereal not just milk in a sippy cub. That doesn't make any sense. The allergy is an allergy to dairy and that includes anything that has dairy. If he is fine with ice cream and cheese then he doesn't have a milk allergy.

My child doesn't have a milk allergy, but I do. I can eat, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, but if I drink milk, I have the same reaction as your son. I've had it since I was very young also, perhaps try some soymilk, it's a little more expensive, but it gives him the nutrients that he needs, and will not cause the reaction that the milk has. Call the dr, but I think if you try this, and wait a day or so, you'll see the change.

Hope it works out for you!

My 19 momth old is okay with dairy products but reacts with milk. She gets diaharra. So it could be the milk. Since he did good for 3 weeks and then had problems i would think it is the milk. I had to go to lactose free milk for my 3 year old because she was haing loose stool and tummy aches. It did great. Try that and if the problem still persists go to vanilla soy milk. My baby loves it.

My son had constnt diaper rash and pooped with almost every diaper, I switched him from regular milk to lactaid. It's cows milk with the lactose removed. The other great thing about it is that the cows it comes from aren't given growth hormones. His diaper rash has completely gone away and now he is regular. The only draw back to it is that it is very expensive. The cheapest place I've found it is Wal-Mart, I thnk it's around 3.50 for a half gallon. It kind of evens out though because before we switched him we were going through diaper rash cream like crazy, we haven't had to buy any since. If you contact them they'll send you some info and a coupon for a free carton and some other coupons. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hi D.,

It is possible that it is a milk allergy but what I thought was my daughter's allergic reaction to milk was a reaction to the steroids and the hormones in the milk. She had numerous urinary problems when she was little and now that she drinks organic cow's milk, she is fine. For your information (because I heard many moms suggest soy milk) there is way too much estrogen in soy milk for little girls and little boys. Boys don't need it at all and girls will actually develop earlier and that causes even more problems health wise.

It is better to go without milk than to substitute with others unless you want to go with a rice milk. Also realize that these issue may be caused by yeast which is rampant in today's little ones because of the amount of sugar in their diets. Not just processed sugars, but bread, white potatoes, etc.

Try to get your little ones to like water. Now is the age to do it. It will only be harder later. Also, water will keep the little one from getting constipated.

Good luck and God bless!

M.

As a mother of an 18 month old, a 7 year old, and myself a naturopathic physician I certainly agree with your motherly wisdom that this could be a milk allergy. Usually this type of response is an IgG sensitivity- the branch of your immune system that has a mild or delayed reaction (not the same as an IgE reaction which is an anaphylatic type reaction, also not the same as lactose intolerant which is an enzyme deficiency). Many medical doctors do not consider IgG reactions as allergies and do not test for them. If you think this is the problem then you can either eliminate dairy or find a naturopathic doctor on www.naturopathic.org. Constipation and rashes around mouth (as well as ear infections) can be indications of food sensitivities. Hope that helps!

I do not have personal experience with a milk allergy, but it may just be the hormones in the milk, if you are buying a normal brand. Try organic, or a brand called Simply Smart it does not have the hormones either.

Though yogurt and cheese are much easier to digest than regular cows milk, ice cream should have the same effect so i'm not sure he would have an allergy since he should have the same reaction to ice cream. Also, lactose intolerance is usually seen with stomach cramping and not with a rash.

I do know however that milk (and cheese) can "bind" (like bananas) while pears and apple juice (like prunes) will loosen things up. You may want to try and get more things in his diet like pears and apple juice along with the milk and see if that makes him more regular. Yogurt too really helps things digestively being that it's pro-biotic, so I would also try and get him to eat that regularly to see if that helps with your issue.
As far as the rash--it may just be related to his constipation...
If you do take him off of regualr milk--make sure he's getting enough calcium and vitamin D from other sources--soy milk and other lactose-free products a lot of times don't have the same amount of calcium/vitamin D so make sure you check and possibly supplement with something else (like the juices they now have with calcium)
