If it is allergies it would make sense that it would have flared up in the last few days. My sons have terrible allergies and those have flared in the last few days, as have my own. The pollen count is quite high. My boys do seem to respond well to Zyrtec. If you want to get an opinion from an ENT, I highly recommend Dr. Tim Trone at Medical City; he has been a big help to my family. You may also want to get your pediatrician to refer you to a pulmonary specialist and/or give you a presciption for some breathing treatments. Antibiotics are fine if he had an infection, but if your pedi is prescribing antibiotics for congestion and runny nose, you may want to consider changing pediatricians. But perhaps he had an ear infection or an upper respiratory infection? My sons initially got a round of great antibiotics and seemed to get better but got worse really quickly once the treatment stopped. I now think it was a really bad cold plus allergies; the antibiotics helped a little but did not cure the problem. good luck I know it's tough. Also remember vicks on the chest and cool air humidifier.
