My daughter had tubes put in both ears, adenoids removed, and a duplicate ear lobe removed/stiched this past Wednesday AM. She slept fine Weds. PM. Normally, my 19 mo. old sleep 9-9, with a 2-3 hour nap during the day. Without taking the time to calculate the actual, I don't think she has slep 12 hours since Thursday AM. She has ear drops we started Weds. PM and Amoxicillin. With her constant previous ear infections, she has had Amoxicillin. Starting Thurs or definitely Friday, she has not really ate ither. She ate A LOT on Wednesday! For those of you who have had children with this procedure done, did your child not sleep? The not eating doesn't bother me too much bec. they said she could have a sore throat from her adenoids being removed..which Weds she was probably drugged pretty good yet versus plain old Tyelnol/Motrin. She is definitely tired, but is wide eyed not sleeping...not crying, irritable really thoughly...almost like she is high and can't sleep. On another note, she did wake up in recovery before my husband and I were back there..could she jsut be scared? I don't know and am looking for any input from those with any knowledge and/or experience of this. It's Sunday but I am probably going to call the Dr. later this morning...when he might be awake. Thank you in advance!

So What Happened?

Thank you for your advice and encouragement. Monday night she finally slept through the night. Although, I had given her Benedryl that the on-call Dr. recommended. I was a little apprehensive about that. Anyhow, she has been drinking good ever since the surgery. She still has to pick up her eating, but I think she is definitely drinking enough milk to fill her up! Thank you again. It was definitely a trying time when she wouldn't even sleep with me holding her.

My children didn't have tubes, but my husband had his tonsils out a few years ago and could not sleep for days. His Dr. said it was a reaction to the anesthesia. The doctor gave him something to help him sleep.

Our now 10month old had his adenoids out & fresh tubes put in in May...( 1st tubes were at 6 months)...He was very irritable for 2-3 days..it was rough...It does take some time for the anesthesia to get out of their system...Also try to keep her comfotable by giving motrin/tylenol. Most of the things I read on the internet said a good 10 days for recovery...Make sure she's drinking & producing wet diapers...calling the Dr. is probably a good idea in that it will help ease your mind too.
Good Luck, it gets better...

Dear M.,

The symptoms you are describing sound very normal. If you are concerned about her fluid intake you can always use a medicine dropper and slowly squirt water into her mouth or maybe a frozen juice popsicle/favor ice etc... if she feels up to it. Some children don't want to eat for fear of it hurting when they swallow.

In regards to her not sleeping, she may just be having a hard time with coming out of the surgery/trauma. Things should level off in a day or two. MOST children go through what your daughter's going through. Eventually they give into their body's natural physical need for sleep! Good luck with everything.

Any other questions/concerns...feel free to ask :)

Hi M.,

Fluids, fluids, fluids. You didn't mention how much your daughter was drinking. Popscicles are great.

My son had his ear tubes removed, adenoids removed and tonsils removed when he was 4. He refused to drink anything & had to be hospitalized for a day to get fluids.

Call the doctor.
