Hello ladies,
I'm planning to throw my husband a surprise 40th birthday. However since we are temporarily living in an apartment I am hoping to have it somewhere else. The event will take place in November so outside really is not an option. Do any of you ladies know of a good venue to have such a party for 40-60 people in San Jose area? I would love to be able to serve some food, drinks and a DJ with music would be a bonus! Since my kids we haven't really been out much so I do not know where the "cool" and "hip" places are anymore. I want to make it really fun for him and for our friends that attend. I know you guys have some really creative ideas and I would just love to hear them. Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

We had my husband's 50th at the Sunnyvale Community Center. There are plenty of other Community Centers in the San Jose area that might rent a room cheaper. We had a large circle of friends at the time, so a half dozen of the ladies decorated for me, another friend DJ'd and we did a potluck for the food.

For his 45th, we reserved the common room in my condo complex. If you know anyone who lives in a condo who could reserve their clubhouse for you, that would be a less expensive option. Time Deli on Bascom and West San Carlos has done catering for several events in our social circle and does a nice job. That's an option if you have more of a budjet to work with.

We've also had several birthday parties at Bucca di Beppo in the Pruneyard. The food is served family style and the place is pretty noisy already, so they don't mind a loud crowd.

S.,

It depends on where you live but for my 40th, my husband contacted a local pub where we used to hang out in downtown Sunnyvale, CA. They have an upstairs area with a bar and pool tables and a patio. They also serve food and were willing to order in the special brand of vodka that I like. The cost was minimal (food and bar tab only) and we were able to bring in a cake and have the place to ourselves till about 8pm and then live entertainment for free!

My family has had parties at the Sonoma Chicken Coop in Campbell. They have an upstairs area that you can reserve that has a small bar and room for a dj. Good luck!

My 40th was at the Old Almaden Opera House. Their specialty is private parties, in fact I believe that's all they do anymore. I'm not sure what the guest minimum is. My party was a lot of fun. It's easy to get to, plenty of parking.

I went to a Christmas Party last December at Mio Vicino on Benton in Santa Clara. The restaurant has a separate room for parties. There were about 35 people. I think the room holds 40, but no room for a DJ. The staff was quite attentive and the food excellent.

I know outdoors is not what you want but these places have outside heaters. Bocci Ball in either Los Gatos or Paragon Restaurant downtown San Jose. My husbands 40th was at Paragon and we had a super time. They served great food and drinks all night long. Bocci Ball kept us entertained. Good luck!
