Painful Pregnancy??

So here's what's going on...

I'm 24 weeks, and I've been in immense pain my entire pregnancy. At first it was just crampy, sometimes shooting pains in my very lower abdomen. This was accompanied with light spotting which put me on bed rest for a month. Now, I've been on bed rest for about a month, just got taken off bed rest, but still out of work for at least 2 more weeks. I have constant cramping/achey feelings in my lower back, abdomen and upper/inner thighs. It increases when I am in a sitting position (whether in a chair, legs under me on the couch or cross legged). I can only be on my feet for about 5 minutes before the pain starts to get worse and I feel weak like I'm going to pass out. The only thing that helps is laying on my left side or reclined with my feet up. When I'm on my feet or sitting, the normal pregnancy discharge gets heavier.

I bought a support band because my doctor thought it was just ligament stretching, but it doesn't help at all. I've only gained 6lbs so far, so I know it's not from that. I am high-risk and transferring to a high-risk clinic, and I'm going to talk to the doctors there about all this, obviously. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had anything like this or maybe an idea of what's causing it. Other than the extreme pain, everything is fine with the baby. Ultrasounds and bloodwork, ect have all showed normal. I'm just so frustrated not knowing what's going on with my body and looking for some answers.

Thanks mamas!

I definitely sympathize with you. I pray that everything really is ok and that you get some relief soon.

I had pain with my 1st, I don't think quite to the level of yours but it was bad enough. I went to the doctor and the ER a couple of times about it and was always sent home saying that it was "round ligament pain".

Ended up on bed rest myself for several months.

Turns out that I had a fibroid that was growing with the pregnancy and THAT was what was causing all my cramping and abdominal pain.

Later on down the road, around 26 weeks, I was in UNBEARABLE pain. Whew! :-) I'm hurting just thinking about it again. Called my doc and he said that it was just my fibroid again and if I couldn't deal with fibroid pain then I certainly didn't need to consider a natural (non-epidural) childbirth. He told me to get some sleep.

Was he kidding?!?! I couldn't sit, stand, lie down ANYTHING without being in pain. Well, I went to the ER again at that point, ignoring his advice, and turns out that I was in pre-term labor! Thankfully, because I trusted my own instincts as a woman and NOT the doctor, I was able to avoid a premature birth.

I had pain with this last one but it wasn't constant. I had a hernia repair 7 years ago around my Csection scar and that caused adhesions to attach itself to my uterus. The doctor had to clean it up when I had my Csection. I sure hope you feel better soon! Good luck and congratulations!

Contact the Int'l Chiropractic Pediatric Assn and get a checkup from an member-it may be that your structure- Dr. Larry Webster, the founder of the Assn- discovered ways that your body's structure causes significant problems- these are not things that would sho up on the tests you have had.
best,k

Definatly talk with the new doctor about it. I am at 33 weeks now, and having issues. I have a hard time standing and walking lately, and I have just chalked it up to the ligaments moving, and everything stretching. But mine just started in the last week, and i know everything has to shift around anyways.

If you are having that kind of pain, they should look at other things that can cause it. especialy if it's getting worse and not better. If you are still in that pain, then you should talk to the doctor's about keeping you off or work, unless you are able to get into a comfy position at work, and be able to work through your pain.

I had lower back pain during my pregnancy and the doctors said it was from the way the baby was laying. But I didn't have the cramping or discharge. I talked to my cousin that had what you are describing and she said to tell you to put a heating pad on your back a few times each day. Also to make sure you have shoes on at all times when you are standing. Along with that advice she also said to ask what clothes you are wearing. Her doctor made her wear real loose fitting clothes. At night sleep with a pillow between your knees and one behind your back to keep you on your side. Also she was told not to lay on her left side but to lay on her right side. She ended up having to do bed rest a couple times during her pregnancy and refused to take any type of pain meds at all. The baby was born three weeks early and in perfect health. Once the baby was born Moma's pain was gone too...

A friend of mine had a separated pelvis. Has your OB checked for this?

J.,
I did not have painful pregnancies. What I would suggest is to keep telling your doctors over & over. And if you dont get the answers you want/need, find another doctor. And go with your gutt!!! If you feel like something isnt right, you're probably right. It sounds like you need to really take it easy & probably not work for the remainder of your pregnancy.
Good luck & let us know what happens.

Other than the spotting (which is most often normal), you sound like me when I get pregnant. For each of my pregnancies, from the moment the blastocyst implanted in my uterus, all of my ligaments went nuts, especially those in my lower back and hips. I would suddenly have severe weakness and pain in my lower back, hips and legs. Sometimes I could swear that I could feel my hips separating. The only thing that really helped me was getting a massage every 1-2 weeks. I went to a woman that specializes in working with pregnant women and she did wonders! The pain didn't completely go away, but it significantly helped reduce the pain. The one caveat is that you will need to wait until you are no longer on bed rest and get the OK from your doctor to get the pregnancy massages (and don't go to just any massage therapist--make sure you see one that specializes in pregnancy massage). The positive part of all this is that this is not a sign that there is anything wrong with the baby or the pregnancy.

I also went into preterm labor with my first pregnancy and I can tell you that preterm labor feels completely different from the pain that you are describing. With preterm labor, cramping usually starts in your lower back and moves to your abdomen. You'll feel your abdominal muscles get hard and you'll find that the waves of more painful cramping will have a somewhat regular pattern. If you start feeling this way, get up and move around. If the cramping goes away, you are experiencing braxton hics. If not, run to the hospital because it's most likely preterm labor.

Good luck! I am one of those that has horrible pregnancies, but I can tell you that it is worth it all in the end. As much as I hate being pregnant and suffering for 10 months, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

Look for pregnancy yoga or pilates in your area. You are not moving correctly and everything needs to be lengthened and stretch to feel normal again. ALso consider a cranial sacral therapist. They can definately straighten your problems out!
