Outdoor Birthday Party...and It's Raining like Crazy!!!

Hello All!

We reserved a pavilion at a nearby park for my son's 6th birthday party, and it has been raining steadily for 4 days...

We had some great relay races planned, and now, it looks like rain is definitely in the forecast (and most of these games were to be played in the wonderful grassy field that is now a small pond). The pavilion is pretty large, and I need some ideas for party games in a limited amount of space...Also, I'm hoping to use toys, balls, household items that we have around the house (definitely willing to get some items, but as the space is limited, so is my planning time-lol)!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks, in advance!
H.

So What Happened?

UPDATE:

The party was awesome!!! We had a good turnout, and I had no need to worry...the kids played hard and had a blast!! It was wet, but the games were fun (and the impromptu ones were great too). Thank you all for your words of advice, wisdom, and peace! All the kids were soaked, and the grownups had so much fun watching them! YAY!!

As long as there is no lightening, they can play in the rain. I would shoot a quick email to the parents, letting them know it will still be outdoors and asking them to send the kids in rain boots or other appropriate shoes and rain coats. The kids will love playing in the rain.

This happened when we had my daughter's 5th birthday. We had umbrellas and the kids thought it was great to run around in the rain with the umbrellas.

We also filled small paper cups with water and partially froze them. Then we put a quarter in the cup and filled it more and then froze it solid. We had a race to see who could get the quarter out first.

Draw on the wet cement with chalk. Use washable markers to draw designs or pictures on paper. Then set the paper in the rain and watch how the picture changes when it gets wet.

Play volleyball with balloons.

Race to see who can pop balloon the fastest. (Just be sure you clean up all the balloon pieces. They are hazardous to birds and small animals!)

We had an outdoor birthday party this year for the kids (birthdays are 4 days apart- they're 7 and 3). We had also rented a large pavilion. 10 minutes before the party, a surprise rain shower blew up and POURED! The kids had a ball. They splashed and ran in the rain and had the best time just being, well, kids.
I don't know what the temp is supposed to be there, but here, tomorrow, it's to be mid 70s. Not super warm, but not freezing cold. I would suggest running out in the morning to the dollar store and getting a bunch of ponchos and hand them out. I think you'll have a hard time keeping them out of the rain. Then just let them play ball, do your relays, and have fun. They'll have more fun doing those things in the rain. If I learned anything from this experience it's that rain only bothers adults. :)
If it's really too nasty in the morning, I would stop and get some of those small pumpkins and do a pumpkin carving party. They'll love that too!

Is rescheduling an option?

1.Bring pin the tail on the donkey or some equivalent...1. cake walk type game (bring numbers, put in circle, play music, stop music pull a number, winner gets a little prize)...3.stand in circle, blow up balloons but don't tie them, let them go and see which kid gets closest to a target.

Make a Mummy race. Divide into teams, each team chooses a guy to be a mummy and hand out TP. Each team races to wrap their mummy first. Great for October parties!

If you have room, you can do the egg on the spoon relay.

When we had a party for my kids in our basement, I had 17 kids with friends and family plus all the adults. It was crowded. But the games they played were great for a small space. I was afraid some would consider them lame but they all had a great time. I blew up balloons, and added a little helium for an extra element of difficulty, and put in little notes for the kids to act out. Act like an animal or a person or something like that. The kids had to pop the balloons without using anything extra. I used smaller balloons, 9 inch I think, and did not inflate them all the way. We also did a little treasure hunt and they decorated paper bags to use for the piñata we had. You could also do a something like hot potato using a balloon filled with water or similar. Just remember, you do not have to fill the entire time with games. Give them unstructured time to play.

If it is raining like crazy and you do have some shelter you should be fine. Make up some things like bozo buckets, drop the clothespin in the milk bottle, pin the nose on the clown etc. or make a craft of some sort. And tell the parents you are doing a shorter party due to rain. have your food and cake and be done with it.
