I nursed my first son for 10 months until I was 2 months pregnant, got the flu and dried up. My second son is now 11 days old & after losing over 1lb since birth my dr. told us to try a bottle. So, I nurse first, he gets about 1/2 ounce out, then I pump another 1.5 oz and bottle feed him. He is pounding the bottle and today I followed up the first 2 oz with some frozen bmilk and he ate 3.5 oz..more than I produce at one time. Luckily though, he has gained weight the past 36 hrs! My question is, beside pumping which I A. doing:
a) what can I do to increase my own supply (this was never a problem with my first!) AND
b) if it does come to needing to supplement with formula afterwards, are there any recommendations for a good type of formula to use in conjunction with breastfeeding?

water water water, take your prenatal vitamins, and nurse nurse nurse! The more your son nurses the more milk your body will make - AND the pump is not nearly as efficient as a baby at expressing and building up milk. Even if you are only pumping a half ounce, it is likely that when he nurses he is actually getting two ounces or more. You could take him in to a store (pickles and giggles in Temecula has an infant scale) or the Dr office and weigh him before a feed, then nurse and weigh him again to see how much he is actually getting. Since you nursed your first you already know that it gets much easier after the first couple of months, so hang in there and just keep on drinking and keep on nursing. The more you pump and supplement, the faster your milk will decrease - let the baby do the work, it's natures way :) Good luck to you!

Breast milk is an amazing substance that cannot be duplicated by any
artificial means. Unique in its composition and function, breastmilk:
• contains an ideal balance of nutrients that the infant can easily
digest
• changes over time, and even over the course of a day, to meet the
changing needs of the growing child
• contains substances essential for optimal development of the
infant’s brain, with effects on both cognitive and visual function9
• supplies growth factors that combine to mature the infant gut
• provides the infant with immune factors manufactured to fight
allergens and illnesses specific to the mother’s and infant’s environment.

Please try to:
* Eat more - load up on carbs
* Drink plenty of water
* Pump even when milk is not coming out
* Nurse frequently - he will help increase your milk supply
* Try to help your son stick with the breast by not giving him a bottle but by giving him a pacifier and then your breast.
* Try Moringa Oleifera plant, is THE most nutritious plant known to the world. Moringa has been clinically proven to increase the production of breast milk whether it is consumed before or after the birth of a baby. Mothers who took Moringa were shown to produce more than 2x the amount of breast milk than those who didn't.
We all know instinctively that breast milk is the ultimate food prescribed by nature for the infant child and Moringa can be instrumental in helping mothers produce more of this precious food. Zija International puts it all together.

definitely get yourself some fenugreek. I went from getting 2-3oz total from both breasts combined to gettin 9oz! I was on it for 8 days wheni got the 9oz, but by like day 3 of using it i already saw a big increase in my milk. I took 3pills 3 times a day. The good thing is that you can stop taking it and your milk wont go back down. Until it kicks in, just make sure you keep latching lo as much as possible, and when you start noticing that you have enough milk for your baby or more than enough milk i suggest you stop the fenugreek and nurse from one breast per feeding so that you have a good foremilk/hinmilk balance.

Hi there
You could try a natural supplement for you called fenugreek. YOu can buy it as "mothers milk" from Mothers Market. It is supposed to help with milk production. Other than that, try nursing more frequently for shorter periods. The more you nurse the more milk you will produce (in theory). Oh, and remember to keep yourself well hydrated - drink lots of fluids
Good luck

what you can try is after you breast feed him on both sides then pump about 10 mins each side. if you come down with supplimenting go for the gentlest one which is good start and its one of the cheapest ones too.
