My son is almost 11 months old and is a very good baby. He sleeps all night until about 8:00 in the morning and takes two naps during the day. My problem is that I can't get him to go to sleep with out tons of effort. He used to fall asleep with a bottle around 8:30 and be out for the night, but for the last couple of months he falls asleep then wakes up about 45 minutes later and won't go back. I have to rock him, bring him into my bed, ect. until he falls asleep and then I can transfer him to his crib and he is fine the rest of the night. By the time this is all done it is now about 10:00. I have let him cry, but he gets so hysterical that I end up picking him up. Any ideas anyone has would be helpful. I'll try anything at this point. Just for some info: when he takes his naps, I put him in his crib awake and he falls asleep on his own with no crying. Sorry this was so long.

What can I do next?

the worst part is that the short 45 mins thatr he is sleeping at first is a quicl nap for hin so he is wide awake when he gets up. Try making his afternnon naps shorter. You might also want to try moving his first nap closer to the second nap so that you can take the second nap away. This might make him more tired at night. Is he eating more than usual? If so he might be going through a growth spurt. You could try adding a bowl of cereal to his dinner routine. The could also be teething, he might just be in pain. I hope one of these answers helps.

Adjusting the todlers sleep time is going to be more difficult on you than it is for him. My kids are now 10 and 5. He might be ready to start the one afternoon nap. I really missed my kids taking the daytime naps, but there comes a point when the choice is me having an hour or two alone during the day or a quite time at night. Just because he is falling asleep when you put him in the crib doesn't mean that he really needs that nap & they do adjust quickly when it is time to only have one. I think the "one nap" happens about the same time as they start walking (around 12 months) and the "no nap" can happen any time from age 3 to first grade. I know it will be difficult but, keep him busy during one of the daytime naps so he won't be dosing off. Maybe if he is more tired at 8:00pm he won't be waking up. Hope this helps.

Hello,
you have my sympathy!
we struggled with our daughter getting to sleep on her own.. for soo long...

I would be cautious about putting him to sleep in your bed and transferring...it may be always expected and is very hard to change..
some suggestions...
shorten his pm nap so he is really tired at bed time.. .wake him up if you have too.
set a routine... like story ONE or two ... kisses and tucking him in....
if he cries leave... and wait a period of time 5 or ten minutes.. then have someone else DAD or other go in and say good night again... do this ... until he falls asleep.. do
it will take a few days but I bet after 10 days it will be done.
STICK to the routine~
if he wakes up after one hour of sleep try to ignore him for a few minutes .... and see what happens... have dad go in again and settle him.. do not pick him up ...
( it will be very difficult for mom!! I was crying outside the door)

you will get your nights back and he will learn a very very important skill... fallling asleep in his own room and being happy .... !

( married 12 years .. working mom of two age 6 and 9 )
let me know how you do...
a well rested mommy is a happy mommy!

My daughter is now 6 years old. I used to give her some cereal along with her bottle before bed time. When I used to take care of my sisters son acouple nights, I used to put the gerber cereal (ya know oatmeal, or rice etc) in his bottle, just enough so it would fill his belly and keep him asleep.

If your son falls asleep quick for his naps, think about what you do before he goes in. Is it shortly after eating lunch or a bottle...

I wish you the best of luck. I know it is frustrating at times, but cherish every moment, because they grow sooo fast. I can't believe my baby is in first grade..God Bless you and your family...L.

Hi there!
My my two girls are still so different from each other....The oldest always took cat naps....Not even a 30 minute nap.. The second one took more that I ever imagined!!! She still takes her naps after preschool and she a good sleeper at night too.
It sounds discouraging but It's h*** o* us (Moms) Your son might be needing only one nap, if not try stretching "going to bed time" later than 8:30. Or a warm bath before going to bed.
Good Luck

I was having the same problem a few weeks ago my daughter will be 12 months old on the 18th.What i did was let her nap only 1 time during the day in bed with a bottle between 2:00 and 3:00.sometimes she tries to fall asleep around 7:00 which i dont let her because then she will wake up around 11:00 at night,so i pick her up if she looks sleepy and keep her up until 9:00-9:30 lay her in bed with her bottle and she out for the night.so just give 1 nap during the day and bed around 9:00-9:30.
